GENERAL MEETING
September 6, 2005, 6:30 PM– Casa Del Prado—Room 104
By Bill Molnar, 2nd Vice President
Gary Pierwola, the SDCOS past president, will show us how to repot cymbidiums and give some valuable tips for growing them well. Gary has an orchid care and repotting business, so he has perfected a fast, simple and easy method for repot-ting. Gary's gorgeous orchids have won Best of Section awards at our orchid shows, and his blooming plants have been seen on the display tables at our monthly meetings. Last year, Gary shared a repotting technique with me that keeps your cymbidiums blooming the year after repotting. It works! Spikes are forming on my cymbidiums that were repotted last

year. Come learn his secret. I know that your cymbidiums are "praying" that you'll attend this class so that they can have a richer, happier life. We’ll see you Tuesday night at 6:30.
We would also like to give a big thanks to David Brown for helping us learn to inter-pret what our orchids are telling us. His casual approach, combined with his will-ingness to answer many questions, made for a very informative program. David, thanks for sharing all that you've learned from your reading and growing experi-ences over the years!
Purpose: To promote interest in orchids and their
cultivation, to educate by exchanging information and
experiences related to successful orchid culture, and to
support the conservation of orchids in the wild.
Volume 81
September’s speaker will be Bob Hamilton,
who is a former president of the AOS’s Odon-
toglossum Alliance, and has been growing or-
chids non-commercially since 1975. Bob is
also a lifetime member of the San Francisco
Orchid Society and the Orchid Society of Cali-
fornia, for which he is also a former President.
Bob’s orchid interests involve odontoglossums
and their hybridization, but he also breeds
odontiodas (generally hybrids between Coch-
lioda and Odontoglossum) and rhynchosteles
(formerly Lemboglossum—see the June issue
of your SDCOS Newsletter). Bob is also very
interested in the history of hybridization, and
his presentation at the September meeting will
discuss endangered hybrid orchids.
While it may seem strange to some of you
that hybrid orchids could possibly be endan-
gered, since they don’t generally exist in the
wild, there are many orchid hybrids that were
made around the turn of the last century or
before that are disappearing from cultivation.
Lycaste Wyld Court 'Sir William Cooke' FCC/
RHS is one example. While this is an impor-
tant parent for many of the gorgeous red Ly-
caste hybrids available today, almost all of
these orchids surviving in cultivation are vi-
rused and swiftly disappearing.
Bob is an expert orchid hybridizer, and
knows a lot about odontoglossums, so come
and see him on the 6th of September!

What Does “Diploid” Mean?
By: Claire Schneider
SDCOS Member
I was at a general meeting several months ago, when a member asked what the term “diploid” meant. The pre-senter gave a brief answer, but I think the question de-serves a more complete answer. I’m more familiar with Gregor Mendel’s pea plant genetics than with orchid genetics, but perhaps this article will begin a more com-plete discussion of orchid genetics.
The term “diploid” refers to the number of chromo-somes inside cells. Chromosomes are long strings of DNA and each chromosome contains hundreds to hun-
dreds of thousands of genes1 . Generally speaking, each cell contains matching pairs of chromosomes. For ex-ample, every cell in the human body should have 23 pairs of chromosomes (i.e., a total of 46), in each and cell! That’s a lot of DNA. And, every pair of chromo-somes contains matching genes.
However there are some exceptions. A human sperm or egg contains only 23 chromosomes, not 23 pairs. This makes sense when you remember that sperm and egg unite during fertilization to form a human cell with 46
total chromosomes 2. If a sperm cell and an egg each contained the normal quantity of 46 chromosomes, then babies would end up with 92 chromosomes and that wouldn’t work for humans, as aberrations in the chromosome number of humans usually results in pro-found birth defects. The cellular process that halves the number from 46 chromosomes to 23 in the sperm and egg is called meiosis and for animals it occurs in the testes and ovaries. In regular flowering plants, this process occurs with the anthers and ovary; but in or-chids, the structures primarily involved are the anthers, or pollinia, and the column, or gynandrium (where the ovary is located).
A haploid cell contains half the normal number of chromosomes. Sperm and egg are examples of haploid cells because they contain 23 instead of 23 pairs of chromosomes. All the other cells in the body should have a diploid number of chromosomes. In other

words, all the other cells should have 23 pairs of chro-mosomes. Geneticists also use the terms ‘n’ and ‘2n’ to define the number of chromosomes: ‘n’ is the haploid number; ‘2n’ is the diploid number. For example, in humans n = 23 and 2n = 46.
Although plant fertilization is more complex than ani-mal fertilization, to make it simple, pollen and ovary are to orchids what sperm and eggs are to animals. The haploid pollen fertilizes the haploid ovule to produce a cell with a diploid number of chromosomes. After a complex process involving a double “life cycle,” the fer-tilized plant cell eventually becomes the diploid seed.
And this brings us to tetraploid. Can you guess what this might mean? A tetraploid cell (4n) has four of each chromosome instead of two. Remember that most regu-lar, or diploid, cells have pairs of each chromosome. Thus far, there are no reported cases of tetraploid mammals, but some species of fish, reptiles, amphibi-ans and plants can be tetraploids. And in fact there may be a benefit for having a tetraploid number of chromo-somes (at least for orchids anyway), but that’s another story.
So, now that you know what diploid means, are you ready for a quiz?
Most oncidiums have 56 total chromosomes in their non-reproductive cells.
(1) What is the haploid number for these oncidiums?
(2) How many chromosomes would you expect to see in a normal pollen grain of an Oncidium?
(3) How many chromosomes would you expect to see in a cell from the petal of the Oncidium flower?
(4) A breeder from Santa Barbara has managed to cre-ate a tetraploid Oncidium. How many chromo-somes would be in a cell of its leaf?
1 A gene is a section of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a protein or enzyme to be produced in an organism, which will influence the transmission or expression of a particular trait.
2 The technical term for a fertilized cell is “zygote.” After many cell divisions the zygote becomes an embryo.

Answers to the “What does diploid mean?” quiz from
previous page:
(1) n = 28
(2) 28, because pollen should be haploid.
(3) 56, because petals are not reproductive cells.
Petals lure pollinators, so they should be dip-
loid, just as leaf and root cells are.
(4) 4n = 112

discussed AOS wanting every orchid society in America to have an entry in 2008 World Orchid conference in Miami, Florida. For consideration by SDCOS. 2-Loren is one of Pacific South AOS judges vice-chair; they need to raise money for their annual budget. Usual costs are supported by many societies, with SDCOS being a donor for support of this judg-ing region. We will be asked to support this group again. 3-Loren discussed the AOS annual awards. They come with a cash prize, as well as recognition in the magazine and certificates. He brought up the fact that the one genera that doesn’t have a cash award is the Cymbidium genera. He is trying to set up an initial endowment fund of $10000 with dona-tions from various growers, societies, individuals. He approached the Board for help with this project. More to come.

The SDCOS lending library is now open from 6:30 p.m. to the start of the general meeting. Thanks to member Owen Smith for volunteering to help out with this important resource!
Dear SDCOS,
Hello again, and I hope you all have been enjoying what’s left of this summer. Keep in mind that
when we have horrible heat waves, that it’s better to water your orchids at night than not at all. I have to
constantly remind myself this time of year that more water is better than less, and unless we’re having a
summer cold snap, it’s ok to violate this cardinal sin of orchid growing, if the alternative is to let your plants
go dry on a day that topped 95 degrees. I know I promised to write more about the intricate relationship be-
tween light, water, temperature and air quality/humidity in this issue (and I certainly will later), but SDCOS
member Claire Schneider sent in a fascinating article about chromosome numbers in orchids, and this issue
also contains pictures and award winners from the July mini-show. All of you who brought plants to the July
mini-show or volunteered that weekend so that we could have the show (at all) should be very proud of
yourselves, and I’m sorry if not everyone who helped or brought plants was mentioned in this issue.
Also, since the meeting room in the Casa del Prado is owned by the city, no pets
are allowed at our meetings or at our shows, with the exception of service or guide
animals for people who are differently-abled. So basically, unless Snuppy is a pro-
fessional, leave him at home so we can continue to use the City’s facilities. Finally,
