It is an honour to have been elected to the position of President at the recent AGM of the

Bunbury Orchid Society Inc and I must sincerely thank those Members who nominated me and

give my word that the elected Committee Members will follow the great work of previous

Committees.

In saying that I must thank all the previous Committee for their dedication to the Society over

the past years as without a Committee there can be no organisation. Special mention must be

made of the support of our past Secretary Meryl Atherton who could no longer continue due to

ill health and we wish her well.

Lyn Harwood has agreed to fill the position of Secretary much to my delight, as there was no

one prepared to take on this onerous position at the AGM, and I ask for Members to give their

full support to the Society as many hands make light work.

I have always in life having served on many a Committees recognised that ‘they never build

monuments for Committee’s’!!

It is the Membership that keeps the organisation going ahead.

During the 2016 Orchid season there are many functions that have to be organised, and I trust

that all Members will consider assisting in any manner they are capable of.

There will many opportunities during 2016 for Members to bring forward to the table any issue

that they may feel needs to be addressed such as Guest Speakers, Meeting discussions, Show

and Display options etc.

Meeting opened at 9.06 am at Australind Community Hall.

Present and apologies were as per attendance book.

New member – Gerry Jackson.

Minutes of December meeting were distributed by mail and via web within the Orchid Talk.

Business arising from minutes was nil.

Minutes passed as true and correct by W. Hardy, seconded by H. Cartwright.

Treasurers Report was explained and tabled for members’ perusal by L. Darlington. Treasurers

South East Orchid Society and Albany Orchid Society are only sending newsletters by email

FEB 2016 GENERAL MEETING MINUTES CONT.

Committee Report. 1. Postage; 2. Hall Hire; 3. Barter Marts; 4. Intersociety Challenge.

General Business.

Intersociety Challenge. Theme is ‘Wild and Free’. The Youth and Community Centre has

been booked. Dinner will hopefully be at RSL hall, estimate of $50 per head. Both ven-

ues are in Busselton. Rick has set up a web page on Facebook - ‘2016 WAROO Interso-

ciety Challenge and Workshop’. Guest speaker from eastern states is Tinonee Orchids.

Both Noel Mills and Joyce Gearling have both passed away late last year.

Barter Mart 20th February. Also a morning market at Queens Gardens. Majority passed we

still hold it same day. Set pegs for bays by 12 noon, open for sellers 1 pm.

Orchid Talk needs an Editor. Postage is now $1. A suggestion was if members need it print-

ed, the member could pay their own postage. John Palmer agreed to be new editor, the

format will be simplified.

SEEDLING COMPETITION UPDATE

NATURAL INSECTICIDES

Here are a few toxic recipes for the nasty bugs.

GARLIC SPRAY

Is for small pests and general plant protection. Chop 90g of raw garlic and soak in 2 tablespoons of paraf-

fin oil for 24 hours. Slowly add 600ml of water into which 7 g of soft soap has been dissolved. Stir well,

strain through butter muslin and store in a a china or glass container, (never use metal). Dilute the solution

to one part in 50 to spray affected plants.

DERRIS DUST

Is an organic compound sold commercially that will kill caterpillars if sprinkled on leaves. Derris is toxic to

fish.

DIPEL

Is a commercially made bacteria to be used against caterpillars and cherry slugs and other chewing in-

sects.

RHUBARB SPRAY

Is an excellent insecticide. Cut up 1.5kg rhubarb leaves, boil in 3.5 litre of water then cool. Dissolve 125g

of soft soap in 2.5 litres of hot water. Cool, strain and blend the two liquids.

CASUARINA

Casurina Needles - up to 9g - infused in a litre of boiling water makes a mild fungicide and protect against

fungal and bacteria and mildew problems.

INSECT REPELLENT

Can be made from chopped garlic, onions, lavender leaves and flowers, mint and yarrow - mixed together

then covered with water. Stand in an airtight container for 24 hours then strain. Add equal quantities of wa-

ter and a few drops of organic detergent and apply as a spray.

CHIVE TEA

Is effective for scab and mildew fungi. Use about 200g of dried chives (buy in bulk at a health food store)

and cover with 600ml of boiling water. Infuse for one hour, then dilute one part to two of water.

If the above doesn't work, or if they do, it is still useful to get out and look at your plants, and I mean RE-

ALLY look. Pick them up and see if any nasties have left any tracks or traces on them, then set a trap. Get

the torch out in the first hour after dark, grab some gloves, your size 9 gumboots and look in the bush

house and around.

Then use TREAD-EM, SQUASH-EM, and CUT-EM-UP. These I have found over the years to have a ra-

ther therapeutic effect on me and have saved a show bench flower or two as well!

Hi All, Here we go again ,2016 is flying past already. For good or bad you have me for your Orchid Talk Editor for the next 10 months . As it is your magazine please forward any suggestions that you have as to how to make it better, articles you would be interested in reading about in particular. The committee for this year is as follows President:: Rick Winch Vice President: Graeme Winter Secretary: Lyn Harwood Committee: Andrea Shine (Treasurer), John Palmer and Ben Vrieling Stewards: Brian Harwood and Steve Nelson . Firstly I would like to thank all out going committee members particularly Meryl for all her hard work and I'm sure we all hope your health is on the mend. Also a big thanks to all newly elected Committee members who put their hand up to fill a position to keep our club running. In particular Lynn for taking on the big job of Secretary once again. Most of you may not realize how close we were to not having a club if she hadn't done this. I think we are still in need of one more Steward so please anyone who is slightly interested let a committee member know. What would you like the club to be doing in 2016 ??? Too much is being done by too few and if we as members don’t get our thinking caps on and put forward ideas for trips or Interests to discuss our Monthly meetings will become a bit ho hum. I don’t think anyone wants that. Please don’t be afraid to speak up you WILL be listened to. Let all make 2016 a ripper of a year and pitch in help each other ,bench your flowering orchids at our monthly meets and don’t be afraid to participate in the 3 shows.
