Back in 1968 while the V ietnam War was still raging I wrote an article about the American soldier Paul V Healey Jr who led the counterattack against the Vietcong guerrillas when they held the US Embassy grounds in Saigon during the Tet offensive in January 1968 Healey virtually by himself was able to clean the grounds of the Vietcong in what can only be called one of the most extraordinary soldierly feats in the entire war for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross

I interviewed Paul when he returned to the United States and recorded those interviews on tape from which I recounted the story in an article I sent the article to a number of publications but it was rejected because the anti-war climate of the time was not right for a story of American heroism in Vietnam

Thirty-three years have gone by and there is a growing respect for the men and women who fought and died for our country in Vietnam The monument in Washington which is visited daily by countless Americans is an indication of the national memory struggling with the national conscience to make sense of that unpopular war

I believe that now the time is right to remember the sacrifices that were made by our men and women in Vietnam Would you be interested in considering the Paul Healey story for your magazine By the way Im not totally new to the magazine which published an article of mine on Americas ongoing reading problem some years ago
