SAM FRANCIS(b.1923 - d. 1994)

In 1986, at the encouragement and promise of an exhibition by his goodfriend, Sam Francis, Manny Silverman quit his day job and set outto open an art gallery. The following year, on famed La CienegaBoulevard in Los Angeles, Manny Silverman Gallery opened its doorson October 24, 1987 with the exhibition, Sam Francis, 1959-1964. Acatalogue accompanied the exhibition and included texts by RobertShapazian and Pontus Hulten. Since 1987, Manny Silverman has mountedfive exhibition of Francis’ work and collaborated on countless others.The selection of Francis’ works exhibited at The Art Show arepresented with respect for the artist’s contribution to American abstractpainting and commemorates twenty years since the artist’s passing.
