FEBRUARY 09 ~ FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Winter’s darkness still enfolds us and so the theme of light and darkness in today’s readings is very apropos for us to ponder. In the first reading, Isaiah gives us an antidote, reminding us that performing works of mercy can bring light into the darkness. In the Gospel, “Jesus said to his disciples… ‘You are the light of the world…. your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.’" Are your words and actions pointing people to Jesus? If they are not, what will you do to be a light in the darkness this week?
LENTEN PREVIEW
If you are a homeowner, you know that it is essential from time to time to inspect the foundation of the house. It is the same with our faith. Pope Benedict had a deep desire that all of us would come to appreci-ate the joy and beauty of our Catholic faith.
On the Monday evenings of Lent from 7:00PM to 8:15PM, Father John will offer a series of presentations on the foundations, or basics, of Christian Catholic faith. These presentations will help you to deepen your understanding and love of the faith. They are also geared for any person aged 18 to 100 years who has not yet been confirmed and would like to receive the Sacra-ment of Confirmation this Spring. Also invited are any persons who would like to know more about our faith and our Catholic Church.
SCRIPTURE FOR FEBRUARY 09
First Reading Isaiah 58:7–10 (73A) Isaiah prophe-sied: Share bread with the hungry. Shelter the home-less. Clothe the naked. Do not turn away from your own. “Then your light shall break forth like the dawn.” Responsorial Psalm 112:4–5, 6–7, 8–9 The just man is a light in darkness to the upright. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:1–5 Paul’s teaching did not come from himself but from the convincing power of the Spirit. So the faith he passed on rests “not on human wisdom but on the power of God.” Gospel Acclamation John 8:12 I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.

Gospel Matthew 5:13–16 Jesus called his disciples the “salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” He cautioned them not to let the salt lose its flavor and not to put a cover on the light but to let it shine. “Your light must shine before others…and glorify your heavenly Father.” before others…and glorify your heavenly Father.”

If you are not able to join us for soup, please arrive at 7:00PM, as we move into the church for prayerful meditation through the Stations of the Cross. If you plan to share one or more of the evenings with us, or, if you would like to volunteer to help, please RSVP by contacting the parish office at 781-729-8220 and leave a message for Leslie Matys.

A DAILY PRAYER
Heavenly Father, walk with me today, and grant that I may hear your footsteps and gladly follow where they lead. Talk with me today and grant that I may hear your tender voice and quicken to its counsel. Stay with me today and grant that I may feel your gentle presence in all I do, say, and think. Be my strength when I weaken, my courage when I fear. Help me to know that it is your hand holding mine through all the hours of this day. And when night falls, grant that I may know that I rest in your sacred heart. Amen

THE UNBROKEN WORD……………………………………….BY MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM
Do we ever consider the difference between wants and desires? The words seem to flow from the tongue as
if they were meant to be always said together, like “bread and butter”. In the same way that greed seems to
be a bottomless pit, never to be satisfied, the same may apply to wants and desires.
However, we often see wants and desires as something better, not as an expression of greed. Greed spells
out its motivation clearly in the word itself, whereas wants and desires are a little more subtle in their inflec-
tion. This inflection is where we may examine the words more carefully. What is the intention behind these
words? Where are we heading with them?
For me, desire seems to be rooted in a willingness to want something or someone but with serious intent. In
theological terms, we often associate desire with love, and for the purposes of this reflection, I will use that
perception. So to desire something is to want it with somewhat of a loving heart. However, want is slightly
different as it adds the possessive element. I don’t just desire your presence, I want to own it!
The point of examining these words is to examine our intention in making requests of God, or of others. If
we are doing it for the “glory of God,” then our desire is probably of a good heart, grace may flow from the
activity. On the other hand, if our only intention is to possess another item, control another person, add to
our list of accomplishments, then the want/desire is coming from another place.
To discern our motive or intention, a simple ingredient can be added to the process. Include God in the con-
versation about your needs and wants, after doing this a few times, it will become very obvious whose
“will” is being followed by your wants and desires.
Take a shot at this experiment this week. Take stock of your wants and desires, and see where your real in-
tentions lie.
Wants and Desires
Yes, here comes the compulsion again. Yes, here comes the compulsion again.
I am sure a new car will make me happier,I am sure a new car will make me happier,
After all the old one is … well … old. After all the old one is … well … old.
If only I would shed the wants,If only I would shed the wants,
Which seem to pop up again like whack a mole,Which seem to pop up again like whack a mole,
As soon as my shiny new want is delivered. As soon as my shiny new want is delivered.
