    LENTEN SMALL FAITH SHARING GROUPS

Small groups are a wonderful opportunity to understand your faith, deepen

your relationship with God and find connection with others in our community.

Consider joining a small group this Lenten season. We will be deepening our

understanding of how the Scriptures connects with our lived experience. The

topic for this season will be “With Jesus to the Cross.”

Groups are currently forming. There will be several time options to fit into your

schedule. Sign up will be in person at the end of the Masses this weekend, Feb-

ruary 8 and 9, by calling the parish office or online through the link on the par-

    ish web site.

    UPCOMING RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SESSIONS

    SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH

Team 1 will meet for session 11 at St. Zepherin for the 8:30am Mass fol-lowed by class in the St. Zepherin Center. This will be a parent and child session for team 1.

Team 1 Sacrament Preparation students will have a special role in the 8:30 Mass. They will also meet with their catechists and Mrs. Emery, our music director, to learn some of the Mass prayers immediately following the Mass This will take place at the piano in the church. The catechists will escort the children from the church to the classroom.

Team 2 will meet for Session 11 at St. Ann Hall at 9:00am followed by the 10:30am Mass.

There will be no team meeting on Sunday, February 16th or Sunday February 23rd due to the school vaca-tion week.

    From Fr. Dave:

Starting February 22nd, Good Shepherd Parish will be welcoming the Chaldean Catholic Community of New

England in using our worship space. Bishop Reed asked if we could give them a place to worship. I spoke with

the Finance Committee and the Parish Council, and both agreed this would be keeping with our parish goal of

being a welcoming community. So once a month, they will celebrate their Chaldean rite liturgy in Saint Zepher-

in’s church and have fellowship in the center. Folks will be coming from all over New England to attend this litur-

    gy.

It is good to remember that there are 24 rites in the Catholic Church. The Latin or Roman rite makes up 98% of

all Catholics worldwide. But, there are also 23 Eastern or Oriental churches that accept Pope Francis as their

Pope. Some of the 23 rites are the following: Byzantine rite, Alexandrian rite, Syriac rite, Armenian rite, Maro-

    nite rite and Chaldean rite.

The Chaldean rite liturgy is celebrated in Syrian, Aramaic and some Arabic languages. People who celebrate

the Chaldean rite liturgy come from Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria and Jor-

    dan.

Again, I am thrilled we as Good Shepherd Parish will be able to wel-

come our fellow Catholics who were searching for a place to worship.

    Pax Christi,

    Fr. Dave

    OUR

    MISSION STATEMENT

    We, the Roman Catholic com-

    munity of Good Shepherd Par-

ish, strive to be a living sign of

Christ's love in and for the

    world.

    In response to our Baptismal

    call, nourished by the Eucharist

and guided by the values of the

    Second Vatican Council, we

    seek to continue the mission

    of Jesus Christ by welcoming,

    supporting and guiding all

    through prayer, sacramental

    celebration, service and educa-

    tion.

Our local Knights of Columbus Council, Good Shepherd #16156, will be

holding a membership drive at all Masses this weekend, February 8/9.

Whether you become an individual member or a member of our council

you will find that Knights of Columbus membership brings Catholic men

together in a powerful way. If you would like to join today simply go to

KofC.org/joinus and enter our council #16156 for local information.

Also, Good Shepherd Council #16156 will be hosting an Exemplification of the Combination Degree, about 35 minutes in length inside the Church with a reception to follow in the Parish Center.

The Knights at Good Shepherd are very excited to share this wonderful ceremony. The cloak of Secrecy has been removed and all are invited. Family, friends and parishioners will be able to view the promises these Catholic men make towards Charity, Praying and their fami-lies.

If you have ever been curious about the ceremonies of the Knights this is for you.

We hope you chose to attend and support the candidates as they make their pledges to Ca-tholicism and to each other. You will also enjoy sandwiches and dessert at the reception.

FEBRUARY 9, 2020 6:15 PM AFTER MASS AT ST. ZEPHERIN’S.

A RECEPTION WILL FOLLOW IN THE PARISH CENTER.

Save the date!!: PARISH LENTEN RETREAT

Damon Clarke Owens will be our speaker for the Good Shepherd Parish Lenten Retreat on Sunday, March 22 from 10:00am-1:00pm. This special event is for all members of the parish and will include participation in the 10:30am Mass and lunch.

Damon’s theme will be The Joy to Be.

Joy is one of the few human “universals” transcending time, culture, religion, politics, and ideology. Joy is the fruit of love, wisdom, truth, freedom, and right order. The “good news” of Christian Proposal is that we are made for joy “to the full” and Jesus Christ desires our joy even more than we do! Joy is not something to be grasped. We must discover its divine source, then receive it as we were meant to “from the beginning.

Damon Clarke Owens is an, international speaker and evangelist. He is the founder and executive director of Joy to B.

A presenter at the 2015 World Meeting of Families, 2017 USCCB

Convocation of Catholic Leaders, and 2019 Catholic Family Life

Symposium. In 2018, Pope Francis honored Damon with his Beneme-

renti Papal Medal in recognition for his work in support of marriage

and family. Damon lives outside Philadelphia with his wife Melanie

    and their eight children.

Words of THANKS from A PLACE TO TURN

EXCERPT FROM LETTER DATED JANUARY 15, 2020

“I’m writing to offer our sincere thanks to everyone at Good Shepherd Parish for your December dona-tions to A Place To Turn. Your contribution of new pajamas, socks and underwear was such an appreciated collection. Though you may never speak to or meet our client families in person, please know they appreciate everything they receive from your donations to A Place To Turn. We rely a great deal on donations like yours during the busy hol-iday season. We are grateful for your support.”

WHAT IS THE “NEW EVANGELIZATION” I KEEP HEARING ABOUT?

The New Evangelization is a term coined by Pope St. John Paul II citing the need to evange-lize societies who were once Catholic. In our Archdiocese in particular, it is reaching out to baptized Catholics to help light the fire of faith once again, or perhaps, for the first time. Both Pope Emeritus Benedict and Pope Francis have continued the call to the New Evangeli-zation as a renewal within the Church. Many of us know Catholics who have fallen away from the faith. The New Evangelization is a way of reaching out, one person at a time, and through our parish efforts, to invite home to the Church the members of our Catholic family

who may be away from the Church or who may never have known what a real relationship with God can be like. Explore the plan, the process, resources, and much more at www.disciplesinmission.com

WE WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED AS WE CONTINUE WITH OUR DISCIPLES IN MISSION IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS. THANK YOU!

Picking salt for the grinder in the gourmet aisle is com-plicated with a wide array of colors, countries of origin, and prices! So the intimidated may be relieved to read Mark Bittman’s judgment in the new 20th anni-versary edition of How to Cook Everything, “…an ar-ray of specialty salts, pulled from oceans or clay, with nuances of flavor and color I don’t think are worth the expense… use kosher and occasionally sea salt,” (p. 26). What Jesus’ audience had to hand for preserving that fish we don’t know. The Greek verb he uses to describe worthless salt, moraine, means “be stupid, in-sane, crazy”.

Equally absurd, the suggestion that someone would light an oil lamp only to put it under one of the 9-13 liter baskets or pots used to measure grain. What is the question to which these images are responding? If we look at the first reading from Isaiah 58:7-10, the “light of the world” in Jesus’ saying picks up the prom-ise or hope of a light breaking forth like dawn or a midday sun bursting through darkness. Our Lectionary omitted the words of the people which Isaiah was an-swering. They were complaining that despite their prayer and fasting God was not listening. The harsh-

ness of life in Judah for those who had returned from exile continued.

God’s response: it’s not dramatic public prayers or fasts that will heal a struggling society. Instead of turn-ing one’s back to not see the poor and oppressed even in one’s own family, try the basics of social justice in God’s vision of the world: feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked; free the oppressed – likely referring to people forced into debt slavery by agri-cultural failure. And for good measure he adds the sins of false accusation and malicious speech. That is the work of religious piety which will get God’s attention.

Where Isaiah’s argument had been with the leaders of Judean society who thought they had been doing more than enough for God to no avail, Jesus has an audi-ence far from the circles of power – or gourmet salt! So, he has suggested another ap-proach to that perpetual question of whether God cares about his suffer-ing people. God is with them all the way, even in suffering as these dis-ciples will learn from Jesus’ cross and resurrection. And the light of justice is not flood lights in Jerusa-lem but in the humble, faithful who recognized Jesus as messiah.

    GOURMET SALT? Pheme Perkins

We had many brothers and sisters waiting for us as we arrived at the Boston Common on February 1st. It was wonderful to have three new volunteers join us for the visit to the Common. In addition to sandwiches and water, we distributed many items of clothing, including warm win-ter jackets, hooded sweatshirts, jeans, sweatpants, hats, gloves, and new underwear and socks.

Special thanks to the students who made Blessing Bags for our February visit. The bags were filled with toilet-ries, snacks, and thoughtful notes. Word travels fast in line when there are Blessing Bags being distributed. Our brothers and sisters are so grateful to receive them!

One of our brothers has been visiting with us since we started the ministry more than eight years ago. During this visit, he shared the exciting news that he landed a job. We look forward to hearing all about it when we see him next month.

DONATIONS: Your donations of NEW AND GENTLY USED FOOTWEAR AND WINTER CLOTHING are greatly appreciated. Please place these donations

and water bottles (16 oz.) in the plastic blue bins in-side both churches.
