DESCRIPTION AND FEATURES

DESCRIPTION

The SALS is a combined stairway and hydraulic passenger lifting system for tarmac-based aircraft passenger access.

It provides the solution of one piece of ground handling equipment that provides the flexibility of stairs and an access lift for those passengers who are not able to use stairs. This innovative solution provides a robust yet lightweight solution that enables it to be manually handled. It can be towed to the bays thereby increasing its flexibility and has the same foot-print as existing manual boarding stairs.

Utilising a combination of galvanized steel chassis with aluminium low maintenance boarding stairs, this equipment is designed to provide years of use, just as our existing DPL’s and Boarding stairs provide.

Providing numerous in-built safety features such as proximity switches, distance sensor to aircraft, traffic light system of warnings, in-built redundancy for hydraulics and high visibility markings and signage.

The units can also be customised to suit your requirements such as corporate colours, logos, and branding so that they are delivered to site ready to go.

SAFETY FEATURES

- Passenger Cabin Control Switch automatically returns to neutral when pressure is removed. This ensures cabin will only move with an Operator present.

- Passenger Cabin Control Switch has protective cover to stop accidental activation. - Both Audio and Visual Operation alerts. - Dual Audio Alert Alarms for redundancy (Lift Power Pack Housing and Deck). - Dual Visual Alert Lights for maximum visibility when Passenger Cabin is moving (Control panel and

Mast amber lights). - Stairway lights for low light passenger safety (Auto timed to turn off after 30 mins.) *optional - Stairway Safety step glow strips for passenger stairway lip visibility. - Anti-slip coating on deck of Stairs. - Passenger Cabin Safety proximity switches that prevent Passenger Cabin movement if Stair or Deck

doors are not fully closed. - Dual Passenger Cabin Door locks to eliminate door opening during ascent and descent. - Cabin Internal light for ease of use and passenger comfort in low light situations. - Tinted Passenger Cabin windows to maintain safe internal environmental temperature when in high

temperature conditions. - Multiple Passenger Cabin vents to maintain safe internal environmental temperature. - Passenger Cabin walls lined with marine grade carpet to minimise bump damage to the cabin or

passenger. - Passenger Cabin hand rail to aid balance for mobility impaired passengers. - Deck Cabin gate physical auto-lock to prevent Deck Gate operation when the Passenger Cabin is below

Deck height. - Deck Cabin Gate proximity switch that disables Cabin movement if Deck Cabin Gate is not fully closed. - Deck Stair Gate with auto-lock to block stair access when assisting disabled passengers onto aircraft. - Deck edge aircraft bump guards to eliminate damage to Aircraft during board/disembark. - Passenger Cabin Hydraulic manual override to lower cabin in the case of a total power failure. - Dual charging options. Solar and 240 Volt mains power. - Passenger Cabin hydraulic lifting ram has reverse flow limiter to limit descent speed in case of

hydraulic pressure loss. - Passenger Cabin secondary descent safety cable in case of catastrophic hydraulic ram failure. - Lift mechanism shields.

ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS

This product has been designed in accordance with the following structural loading codes:

1. BS EN 12312-1 Aircraft ground support equipment – Specific requirements – Part 1 – Passenger stairs.

2. BS EN 1915-2 Aircraft ground support equipment – General Requirements – Part 2 – Stability and strength requirements

Secondary Standards:

3. AS 1664.1 Aluminium Structures; 4. AS 4100 Steel Structures. 5. AS1657 Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairs and Ladder. 6. AS1170.2 Structural Design Actions – Wind Actions 7. AS 1170.1 Structural Design Actions – Permanent, Imposed and other actions.

COMPUTER BASED ANALYSIS.

A 3-dimensional structural computer analysis and design has been undertaken to ensure compliance with structural codes prior to full scale load testing. All structural design calculations have been subjected to an independent design verification by an independent engineer

ENGINEERING RISK ASSESSMENT

An engineering risk assessment was carried out to identify potential hazards and risks. The suggested solutions were incorporated into the design.

FULL LOAD TEST OF PROTOTYPE

Full scale load testing has been carried out incorporating structural testing using the worst-case scenario conditions of horizontal wind loading, horizontal manual forces and 125% rated load.

Stability testing has been carried out using worst case loading combinations of wind, manual and live load.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

- NOTE: The lift is not to be used when the stairs and platform has a full load of 30 persons and the max wind speed is 40 knots (74 kph).

- Extreme caution must be taken when using the stairs in icy or wet conditions. Stairs and deck may cool sufficiently for ice to form on the surface resulting in poor traction for passengers.

- Extreme caution must be taken when positioning the stairs on an icy tarmac. The stairs may not maintain their location against the aircraft. Stairs must be chocked.

- Extreme caution must be taken when using the stairs in windy conditions. The stairs are rated for stability up to wind speed of 40 knots (74kph). Stairs must be chocked. Do not use the stairs above this wind speed.

- Extreme caution must be taken when using the stairs in thunderstorm or lightning prone conditions. The metal structure and height of the stairs make them attractive to lightning strike.

- Stairs are only to be towed on a level sealed surface in accordance with the instructions in this document.

- Assistance should be sought when transporting and handling the stairs in low visibility conditions.
