The San Francisco Wind Symphony, originally founded as the San Francisco Wind Ensemble, is one of the finest wind bands of its kind on the U.S. West Coast. Comprised of leading musicians from all across California, the SFWS brings high-quality performances of world-class wind band reprtoire to Bay Area audiences and beyond.

One of the San Francisco Wind Symphony’s primary goals is to explore the best music for the wind band genre from around the globe. Since its creation in 2012, the ensemble continues to bring an ever- increasing number of world premieres, U.S. premieres, and West Coast premieres to its concert audiences.

Invited performances at the international conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and the California All-State Music Education Conference, as well as live and studio recordings attest to the growing reputation and outstanding musicality of the San Francisco Wind Symphony. Composers, guest artists, critics, and audiences continue to praise the ensemble’s flexible color palette and artistic mission. German-born conductor Dr. Martin H. Seggelke is the Founding Artistic Director and Conductor of the San Francisco Wind Symphony, currently residing as a music professor and administrator at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Previously, he has held several professional positions as Music Director and Conductor, and has taught at universities in California, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, and Germany.

Ensembles under Dr. Seggelke’s leadership have enjoyed critical acclaim at national and international conferences and performance venues. He has recorded on the Naxos, Klavier, and Mark Custom labels, including productions at Skywalker Ranch and winning the American Prize in 2015. He is a highly sought-after guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator across the globe, and has commissioned and premiered dozens of new compositions. In addition, Seggelke has presented at national and international conferences, authored book chapters and articles for a variety of music magazines, and has won numerous awards, prizes and grants as a connductor. Composers, ensemble musicians, audiences, and critics continue to praise his emotional interpretations and innovative concert programming.

Seggelke holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music, and further degrees from universities in the U.S., Canada, and Germany. His teachers include Mark Scatterday, Neil Varon, Brad Lubman, Donald Hunsberger, Christoph Eschenbach, Toshiyuki Shimada, Paula Holcomb, Glenn Price, Felix Hausworthm, Gunther Schuller, Paul Vermel, Pierre Kuijpers, Baldur Bronnimann, Frederick Fennell, and Claus Peter Flor.

Burlesque op. 42 (1988) by Georgi Salnikov (1923-2015)Born in Moscow in 1923, Salnikov studied composition at the Conservatory of St. Petersburg and piano at the Moscow Conservatory, where he later taught instrumentation for many years. His Burlesque is inspired by the tonality and character of Russian folksongs, but does not explicitly reference any known melodies. Commissioned for Molenaar’s Muziekcentrale, this piece is best described as rhapsodic, bright, and virtuosic.

World-Why-Die I I? Minutes of Commemoration for the Victims of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Ataacks in the United States of America

op. 64 (2001, rev. 2015) by Rolf Rudin (b. 1961)German composer Rolf Rudin studied composition, orchestral conducting, and music theory at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt and later composition at the Hochschule fur Müsik in Würzburg. World-Why-Die II ?, originally composed in 2001 immediately following 9/11, was revised by the composer in 2015 for its world premiere by the San Francisco Wind Symphony, and reflects upon the horror faced around the globe from that fateful day. Long reverberations similar to those achieved in big cathedrals are essential to this piece, and the acustic effects are precisely organized and structured. By the end the sound clusters become major chords - and the music decays into the emptiness.

Vallflickans Dans from Bergakungen (1944) by Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960), arr. José Schyns (b. 1959)Primarily known as a choral composer in his native Sweden through the 1920’s and 30’s, Alfvén’s four movement suite “Bergakungen” grew to become his most well-known instrumental composition after his death in 1960. Retooled from parts of the composer’s 5th Symphony, the suite tells a classic Swedish pastorale tale. The fourth movement, Vallflickans Dans (Herd-Maid’s Dance), is vigorous and virtuosic, and has become the best-known excerpt from the score.

Metanoia (2016) by Robert Chastain (b. 1981)Bay Area composer Chastain studied composition, bassoon, and conducting at the San Francisco Conservatory, the University of Florida, and the University of Oregon, and is the recipient of several prestigious international awards and grants. The harmonic language of Chastian’s Metanoia is wildly dissonant, and explores the unorthodox tonal application of a 12-tone row.

Concert N. 3 for Symphonic Band (2013) by Ferrer Ferran (b. 1966)Spanish-born Ferran teaches composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Castellón and the Conservatorio Profesional de Musica de Valencia . His works are known for their sonority and for fusing avant-garde styles with the musical language of Romanticism. Concert N. 3 begins with a four-note motif upon which the entire piece is built. Each section of the ensemble comes together virtuosic artisrty, displaying grandiosity, tension, mystery, splendor, and delicacy throughout the composition.
