More playgrounds for Salisbury families If you live near Adams Oval in Salisbury North or Burton Park in Burton, you’ve probably noticed some positive changes lately. Two new playgrounds have been installed, creating more space for families to relax and play together.

A combination of Federal and State funding has made these playgrounds possible through The Regional Local Community Infrastructure Fund and The Department of Planning and Local Government Open Space Grant Fund.

The play space at Adams Oval (pictured) has facilities for the whole family, including a number of fun wheelchair-accessible elements, a shaded picnic setting, drink fountain and barbeque facilities.

At Burton Park the new play area is shaded, and features a variety of exciting new equipment.

Salisbury is home to 135 play spaces which are regularly inspected and maintained by the City of Salisbury to keep them safe.

In the future, you’ll find playgrounds becoming even more diverse as we incorporate opportunities for nature-based play into their design.

Keep an eye out for redeveloped play spaces as they appear at other locations including Beadell Reserve in Burton, Bentley Green Reserve in Pooraka and Pioneer Reserve in Walkley Heights.

SPRIng 2011

Here to represent youLocal government has been an important part of community decision making since the earliest days of settlement. The first Local Government Council in Australia was formed in 1840 in South Australia with the election of four aldermen and fifteen councillors to the New Adelaide Corporation.

In our three-tier system, Local Government is often referred to as the ‘grass roots’ level of government, being the closest, and most in touch with the changing needs of the local community it serves. In order to function effectively this system needs residents to be informed and get involved, contributing to the local decision making process through Council.

With around 130,000 residents in Salisbury, the 16 elected members represent eight wards with approximately 15,000 people in each. The Mayor, Gillian Aldridge has been elected by the community as the principal representative of the area as a whole. The role of the elected members is to represent your views and act in your best interest – or more accurately the views and interests of our community. If you have a question or concern make sure you’re heard! Contact your local elected member (details below).

We are holding a number of public meetings and workshops to seek your input on topics such as the Town Centre Redevelopment and the redevelopment of both Salisbury North Community Centre and Lake Windemere Reserve. We’ve launched our Facebook page and Twitter account and revamped our website to provide more ways for residents to let us know their views. And of course, there’s always the option to call our Customer Service Centre, contact your local Elected Member, or write me a letter if you have something you’d like Council to know.

As a Salisbury resident you have no doubt driven or walked past one of the ten community centres located across our city. Did you stop to wonder what was happening inside? Or perhaps you assumed it was home to the local craft group or playgroup. Well, we’re here to tell you that there’s much, much more happening at your local community centre.

what‘s on offer?At any given time centres may be delivering computing and technology tutoring; resume writing and job seeking advice; enterprise and business skills development; language and literacy tutoring; a low cost, healthy community lunch or budget cooking class; health information; social and cultural support programs; fitness programs; homework help; family support and playgroups; arts, crafts and other leisure activities; or providing a space for a community group to meet.

who are they for?In short, community centres are for everyone. Programs cater for learners of all ages and abilities, all cultural backgrounds and levels of fitness. The variety of programs, locations, times and affordability mean that everyone can have the opportunity to join in or learn something new.

How to get involvedTo take advantage of the programs on offer at your local community centre, meet new people, learn something new, or indulge one of your passions, simply pop in and pick up a timetable or go to our website to download one.

A message from Salisbury’s Mayor

Welcome to the first edition of Salisbury Snapshot. This new publication is part of a broader effort by Council to keep you informed and to give you more opportunities to have your say about what happens in the City of Salisbury.

Council formally adopted a Community Engagement Policy last year and is appointing a Community Engagement Officer to ensure we consult with residents more effectively about the wide range of programs and services we provide.

Child’s playThere are some great activities for families to get involved in over the next few months. If you’re stuck for things to do this spring, try some of these ideas.

get involved in this year’s aquathlonThe annual Aquathlon and Family Fun Day will be held on 30th October 2011 at Salisbury Recreation Precinct, Happy Home Reserve. This is a fun-filled event with two different distances to participate in for the Aquathlon (a run, swim, run event).

There’s also a Kids’ Race – a mini-aquathlon for under 12’s. The event will lead into a fun day for the whole family with a BBQ, music, low-cost tennis programs and door prizes. Entry into the swimming pool is $2. For more information call 8258 1713 to speak with Brian or Kim or visit our website.

Have a hit at the Hot Shots Tennis Tournament Your child could be the next Bernard Tomic or Alicia Molik! The Salisbury Recreation Precinct is running an MLC Tennis Hot Shots Tournament on the 17th and 18th September for any child who is currently involved in red, orange or green Hot Shots.

Take your kids to kindigym – first session fREE! Kindigym is a movement-based program for children aged one to five years. It stimulates growth and development through play, in a fun and colourful environment with parent/carer supervision and encouragement. The cost is $4.50 per session for the first child and $3.50 for siblings, with a registration fee of $5.00 payable each term. visit Salisbury’s libraries for programs, online resources and, of course, books!Whether you like to read, watch, listen, play or participate, there are so many ways to spend your time in the Salisbury Libraries. Borrowing collections still make up a large part of what the Salisbury Libraries offer, catering to speakers and readers of over 20 languages.

The Salisbury Libraries also provide an excellent range of online resources for members. These include Ancestry (library edition), Library Press Display (online newspapers) and a range of other databases.

Families with very young children can participate through programs such as Giggle Time and Story Time, with school holiday programs for older children. The Salisbury Libraries work with the community both in the libraries and at other locations around Salisbury to ensure everyone has access to collections, programs and services.

Celebrate healthy, active living in Salisbury at the OPaL family fun dayThe Morella Community Centre is the place to be on Wednesday 5th October 2011 where an event supported by OPAL will celebrate healthy, active living. The event will host a range of free and fun activities for families to enjoy such as entertainers, healthy food demonstrations, interactive stalls, indoor and outdoor activities. Bring the kids along and experience healthy, active living in the City of Salisbury!

The OPAL Family Fun Day will take place at Morella Community Centre next to the Parafield Gardens Recreation Centre, 90 Kings Road, Parafield Gardens, 11am-1pm.

Child’s play

If your child doesn’t already participate in this program but would like to be involved in tennis, send them along for professional coaching and they’ll have options to join a club for competitions during term four. Please call John at the Salisbury Recreation Precinct on 8258 1713 for more details.

Swim School Swim School’s fourth term is about to kick off, meaning children aged two to 15 years can learn to swim from accredited and experienced swim instructors. This is an affordable and fun way to help your child become confident in the water.

Swim School takes place at the Salisbury Swimming Pool in the Salisbury Recreation Precinct. The outdoor pool is family-friendly, set in beautiful surroundings with free BBQs, a kiosk and swimming sports shop. There’s also lots of fun equipment to occupy children under the supervision of qualified lifeguards.

Making news...Salisbury town centre redevelopmentThe exciting revitalisation project that aims to create a vibrant city centre for Salisbury that people want to live, work, shop and visit is now in its second stage.

Key ideas on how to improve the centre have come from consultation with the community over the past few months. These ideas were discussed at a workshop on 7th September, to develop design options.

Lake windermereThis month Council began public consultation on its draft masterplan for the redevelopment of Lake Windemere Reserve and the under-utilised Salisbury North Community Centre on Hissar Avenue.

The proposals put forward for consideration include the development of housing, improvements to the lake, provision of recreation facilities including a new playground, shade structure and BBQ area, and general improvements to the access, visibility and safety of the area.

diment RoadOn 27th May Council concluded public consultation on its plans for the development of a portion of land on Diment Road that had previously been set aside for road widening.

A report and concept plan, incorporating feedback from the local community, was endorsed by Council in June. A planning application is now underway, with construction of new homes and facilities expected to commence late next year.

Burton Park soccer facility openOpened to the public in May, the $3.5m Burton Park international standard soccer stadium on Waterloo Corner Road is without comparison in the northern region.

With three full-size soccer pitches, five change rooms and a function centre seating 200 people, the facility has already played host to the FFSA Coca Cola Federaton Cup Semi Finals, the National Schools Championships and two Adelaide Airport Women’s Premier and State League games of the month, receiving rave reviews from players and spectators alike.

new funds for Salisbury’s green Trails The City of Salisbury has secured two grants from the State Government’s Open Space Funding Program; $200,000 in 2010 and a further $464,500 in 2011 for the commencement of the Green Trails Project.

Stage one of the Little Para Trail has been sealed from the Salisbury Town Centre to Burton Road and over the coming months works will extend west to Port Wakefield Road.

The works will involve installation of a sealed shared-use path, seating, lighting of underpasses, signage and re-vegetation of native species back into the corridor.

Jobs 101 campaign A joint effort between local councils, The Messenger, State and Federal Government called Jobs 101 is matching local jobseekers with quality jobs in the northern region.

Since the program began in July this year, over 500 jobseekers have registered with the program, and as a result both employment and apprenticeships have been filled.

There’s a high calibre of employers involved in the program and we were pleased to welcome Futuris on board recently.

Promoting SalisburyFrom September through to November you will see Adelaide Metro buses carrying advertising messages promoting the City of Salisbury. This is part of a campaign to highlight the positive aspects of life in our City, and encourage new residents and businesses to the area.

Cats - consultation closed on draft bylaw Consultation for a draft cat bylaw closed on 12th August. The bylaw seeks to encourage responsible cat ownership and reduce public and environmental nuisances caused by cats. We’re currently collating and reviewing the feedback and expect it to be presented to Council for consideration in October. Following this a decision will be made on whether or not to adopt the bylaw.

Major budget itemsOther key initiatives in the 2011/12 budget are:

Restoration of the iconic St Kilda Boardwalk which •provides an important tourist attraction and a unique environmental education experience for the community.

Upgrades to Hookina Road which will rectify the •drainage and surface issues which became apparent after the recent significant rain, and will complement the upgrades to Helps and Hawker Roads.

Upgrades to playgrounds at Creaser Park, Harry Bowey •Reserve and Brahma Lodge Oval.

Further extension of our internationally renowned storm •water recycling infrastructure.

free for Salisbury residents! Baskets for food waste - if you already have a green waste bin, come in to City of Salisbury and collect your free Jeffries Benchtop food Basket for your food organics. It will prevent your food scraps from smelling and you can use the contents for compost later!

Bin stickers promoting road safety - if you’d like to send a positive message about road safety to people driving down your street, come and collect one of these free road safety stickers to put on your waste bin.

Matsuri on Mobara: a Japanese extravaganzaMatsuri on Mobara is a celebration of Salisbury’s relationship with its Sister City, Mobara in Japan, providing us with a better understanding of Japanese culture. This free event includes demonstrations, activities, stalls and authentic Japanese cuisine. Its impressive stage program includes traditional dance and music, martial arts and traditional sword dancing. The festival will open and close with the sound of the magnificent Taiko drummers from Matsuri Taiko.

The feature performers, George Kamikawa & Noriko Tadano, were a big hit at the 2010 WOMAD Festival. Matsuri on Mobara is held on Sunday 23rd October from 11am - 4pm at Mobara Park, Mawson Lakes. For more information visit the City of Salisbury’s website.
