“We were just in awe of her and thought she was a lovely type and when you married that up with her pedigree, race record and the fact she is by a top sire - she really floated our boat on all aspects.”

Warren said the success of Danehill (Danzig) when paired with Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) made acquiring Missrock a very attractive prospect.

“She has been bought for a private client of Highclere Stud and she is going to come back to the UK and she will be based at Highclere Stud, where the intention will be to use the best available European stallions with a view to try to breed Classic horses,” he said.

“The Danehill blood in Europe mixed with the Sadler’s Wells line has been so successful and that’s where we’re thinking - it’s very exciting.

“Getting these good Danehill mares in Europe is in one of the early phases for us, but when you look at the history of what has worked in Europe - it’s really that Danehill line that’s interesting.”

Coolmore was under bidder for Missrock while Arrowfield Stud also went to $1.5 million in the hope of landing the prized mare.

Catalogued as Lot 903, Missrock is out of Group 3-winning mare Miss Judgement (Strategic), who is herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym) and Group 3-winning pair Fifth Avenue Lady (Encosta De Lago) and Aussies Love Sport (Redoute’s Choice). Further back the mare’s third dam is dual Group 1 winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon).

She joins a whole host of high-class mares such as Mosheen (Fastnet Rock), Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt), She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) Yankee Rose (All American) and Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock) to have ended up overseas.

Kingstar Farm owner Matthew Sandblom praised his farm manager Adam Cook for securing Missrock for his draft.

It was Cook’s initiative which led to Kingstar Farm consigning the mare, whose trainer Robbie Laing bought her for $500,000 at the Magic MIllions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2015.

“It’s a bit of a feather in the cap to get the sales-topper,” Sandblom said. “Her being in our draft was Adam Cook’s doing - he has a good relationship with Robbie Laing through Lord Of The Sky so he managed to offer an attractive deal and her get her in our draft.

“There was a bit of pressure for him because we have never sold a mare in that sort of range before, but he delivered in spades and everyone is happy.

“She had a lot going for her, her reserve was $1.5 million and I wasn’t sure she would break $2 million, but she did.

“She was one of the best looking mares on the ground, she was a very fast mare and she has a good pedigree, so it was a good package.”

Meanwhile, Newgate Farm shareholder Sandblom said he was happy to retain his Group 1-winning mare I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) should a deal not be finalised to sell the mare at this week’s sale.

The former Shane Nichols-trained mare was passed in for $1.4 million yesterday having had a $1.5 million reserve placed on her.

Coolmore’s Invincible bid for JustifyCoolmore’s determination to ensure unbeaten US Triple Crown

champion Justify (Scat Daddy) is a southern hemisphere success at stud was on display on day one of the race fillies and mares sale after they outlaid a combined $2.2 million on two I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) mares, both of whom look set for dates with the stallion.

The highest-priced of the Coolmore-purchased duo was $1.45 million Yarraman Park Stud-consigned mare Invincible Star, who finished second to Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) in the 2017 Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m).

The operation also purchased Group 1 winner Savvy Coup (Savabeel) for $1 million late in the day, with the now Chris Waller-trained mare also destined for Justify.

Tom Magnier and James Bester Bloodstock signed for the Yarraman Park-consigned Invincible Star.

“She is the perfect mare for Justify being your typical sprinting Australian mare. She was a very good two-year-old who trained on to virtually win the Coolmore at breakneck speed to our own $30 million stallion Merchant Navy,” Bester said.

“She also made it into an Everest slot. She didn’t quite get there, but that is how good she was.

“She showed herself to be one of the fastest fillies in Australia who is by I Am Invincible from a strong family - she was a no-brainer.”

Bester said the Coolmore team had not necessarily bought

daughters of the Yarraman Park Stud-based sire to be mated with Justify, but he believed they were well suited to the imposing son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg).

“It is not so much seeking out those but, yes indeed, we do believe that every good I Am Invincible mare should go to Justify whether they be ours or not,” he said.

“We rate Justify so highly that we would like to buy the very best mares on offer to go to him.

“In America he got 65 mares who are either Group 1 winners or the dams of Group 1 winners, so that is the kind of book that he is kicking off with and we have to try and match that (in Australia).”

The experienced South African expatriate said he would not be shocked if Invincible Star became a top-class sales ring producer.

“She probably made a little more than we had expected to spend but mares of that quality make their money,” he said.

“Down the track often they look cheap afterwards. She could throw a million dollar baby by Justify down the track.”

A winner of the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) as a two-year-old, Invincible Star is one of four winners for Romany Flyer (Catbird), who is in turn a half-sister to multiple Group 3 winner Viking Hero (Elvstroem) and the stakes-placed Mabsam (Stratum). She was catalogued as Lot 872.

Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell said he was expecting there to be a lot of competition for the mare given her pedigree and race record.

“I thought she sold well,” Mitchell said. “She was very fast. She won a race as a two-year-old and then only got beaten a nostril in the Coolmore.

“On her day she was very, very good, so it is no surprise to see her sell well.”

On the planned mating, Mitchell commented: “I think Justify suits a mare like that, she’s a neat strong mare who was very fast and he should suit her type.”

Eckstein to join Waller stableMeanwhile, Chris Waller is set to train Group 1-placed mare Eckstein

(I Am Invincible) for the remainder of the Queensland Winter Carnival before she is retired, having also been bought by Coolmore yesterday.

The first of their two high-priced I Am Invincible purchases, Coolmore went to $750,000 to land the former Kurt Goldman-trained five-year-old, who was third in Saturday’s Moreton Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m), with Tom Magnier confirming that she would be joining Invincible Star in a date with Justify.

The Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m), which is restricted to fillies and mares, are all potential targets for the dual Group 3 winner prior to her retirement.

“She is a lovely physical and is one of the nicest in the sale with her pedigree and race record. Our plan is to breed her to Justify,” said Magnier, who combined with Colm Santry Bloodstock to buy Eckstein.

Offered by Attunga Stud on behalf of her owners, which include Goldman’s major backer Alan Cardy, Eckstein is one of four named foals out of the unraced mare Comrie (Choisir), while her second dam Oh So Canny (Sir Tristram) is a half-sister to stakes winners Causeway Lass (Giant’s Causeway) and Astute Angel (Godswalk) being out of multiple Group 1 winner Canny Lass (Bletchingly). She was catalogued as Lot 840.

Attunga Stud’s Brian Nutt said, while he was happy with the sale, he was left wondering whether her being catalogued early in the day meant she was slightly cheaper than she would have been if she was sold when the action really got rolling.

“It was probably at the lower end of our expectations,” Nutt said. “I think the time of the sale certainly meant she was a bit cheaper. She was the first of the good I Am Invincibles to go through and it was early in the sale. I thought it was a bit sticky this morning - so her price probably suffered as a result.

“But it was a great day for us. I just have to thank everyone for supporting Attunga and giving me the responsibility.”

Attunga Stud also sold dual Group 1 winner Savvy Coup on behalf of her owners.

The daughter of Savabeel (Zabeel), was catalogued as Lot 1905 and is one of two winners for the unraced mare Eudora (Pins), who is a sister to Group 2 winner Legless Veuve and the Group 3 scorer Tootsie.

Nutt was hopeful the mare would make somewhere in the region of her eventual $1 million price tag.

“I thought the million was spot on for her,” Nutt told ANZ Bloodstock. “We were hoping to get a million and we had a reserve in place to under a million in the hope she would make that. We got the price that we were hoping for - so it was a good result.”

Coolmore has previously enjoyed success with daughters of Savabeel (Zabeel), having purchased Group 1 winner Diademe for $740,000 in partnership in 2015 before reselling her last year for $1.7 million.

They also sold a Fastnet Rock colt out of Diademe for NZ$1 million last year.

Magnier revealed that Savvy Coup, Coolmore’s second seven-figure buy of the day, was purchased in conjunction with Morning Rise Stud’s Rob McClure.

“Rob McClure has come in Savvy Coup as well and he is a great client of the farm. He is a very successful breeder, so having a guy like him on the team is great,” he said.

“She is a lovely mare and we are excited to have her.”Coolmore also spent $2.25 million on mares Maastricht

(Mastercraftsman) and Srikandi (Dubawi) at Inglis’ The Chairman’s Sale earlier this month to go to Justify.

‘Whispering Brook well bought in this market’Arrowfield Stud’s long-standing two-decade relationship with

Northern Farm’s Katsumi Yoshida and their collective strength brought about the fourth of five seven-figure mares sold yesterday after Yoshida secured dual Group 2 winner Whispering Brook (Hinchinbrok) for $1.1 million.

Consigned by Yarraman Park Stud, Whispering Brook, who was a $45,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale graduate, is one of two winners out of Machiavellian (Mr Prospector) mare Artful Whisper, who is a half-sister to US Listed winner High Maintenance (Danehill). She was catalogued as Lot 986.

Whispering Brook, who started her career with Simon Miller in Perth before heading to the east coast, won ten of her 25 starts, including seven victories at stakes level, and accumulated $1,183,150 in prize-money.

“She’s a lovely mare - she’s a lovely type and was a good two-year-old. She is just a lovely sprinting filly who could also probably run a mile,” Yarraman Park Stud’s Arthur Mitchell told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“I thought she was well bought on this market. I would have thought she was one of the better value ones in the sale. I always thought she would make a million, I just didn’t know how much further it would go. Compared to some of the other ones that have sold today, I don’t think she was bad value on this market.”

Arrowfield Stud’s John Messara said the quality mare was purchased without a specific stallion in mnd.

“We will sit down and do some mating plans and then discuss them with Northern Farm over the next couple of weeks,” Messara said.

“There is no specific plan at this stage but they have interests in a number of sires in Australia with us.

“They also have an interest in The Autumn Sun, but he won’t necessarily suit her because of Fastnet Rock. She will stay in Australia.”

Messara said the market had been tough to get into at the pointy end where Arrowfield Stud and Northern Farm were trying to get involved.

“I would like to say we were the under bidder on Missrock but we were nowhere near her. We were $1.5 million on Missrock and she went straight past us. We have only had a couple of goes but we have more to come.

“The market has been mixed, some good, some bad, but overall the good-quality horses are fetching their price, no question.”

Aquis Farm make big-stakes play for maresOregon’s Day (Domesday) and Quilista (Scandal Keeper) were

purchased by Aquis Farm owner Tony Fung and partners with a view to supporting the stud’s resident stallions, but not before having brief racing campaigns under trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

The training partnership currently have horses stabled at Aquis Farm’s Canungra base in Queensland campaigning in Brisbane and the former Mick Price-trained Oregon’s Day and the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Quilista will transfer to the country environment.

The most expensive of the pair was the Amarina Farm-consigned Group 2-winning mare Oregon’s Day (Domesday), who Tony Fung paid $1,000,000 for. Catalogued as Lot 917, the mare is out of Group 3 winner Oregon Seal (Oregon), who is also the dam of Group 2 winner Talent Show (Jeune) and Listed winner Oregon Spirit (Bel Esprit).

Further back this is the same family as Exceptional Angel (Turf Ruler), who in turn produced Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hawkspur (Purrealist) and Group 3 winner Devil Hawk (Purrealist).

Aquis were the obvious pick on the buying bench to snap up the talented mare, since the operation stand her sire Domesday (Red Ransom) at their Canungra base.

“Domesday is obviously a stallion we have a lot of time for,” Aquis Farm CEO Shane McGrath told ANZ Bloodstock News. “She was Demi O’Byrne’s pick of the sale and she is going to make a lovely addition to the broodmare band when we decide to retire her.

“We followed her racing career closely. She is obviously a highly credentialed mare to go to one of our stallions.

“We buy all these quality mares to give our young stallions a start and these are the sort of mares that make stallions. She has a beautiful pedigree and a great physical.

“She is the perfect outcross, there are so many options (for matings) with her.”

McGrath added: “I think that is the world over, quality sells and the cream rises to the top. With her we will try something a little bit different. She is going to go back out to the farm at Canungra and Ciaron Maher has a lot of his horses out there at the moment, so we might just have one little shot at the stumps in the Tattersall's Tiara with her.”

Meanwhile, Quilista gave her owners a great result yesterday when she realised $950,000.

The Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner was purchased by her trainer Justin Warwick for a mere $10,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale from the Korilya Stud draft and showed she was still in good form having run second in the Glenlogan Park Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

“That was a great sale - we had her on the market a lot earlier than that,” said Brian Nutt, who offered the mare under his Attunga Stud banner. “It was just one of those cases that if current racing form is good, people will pay overs for them. I would imagine they will give her one more run at the Carnival.”

McGrath commented: “She is a lovely type of mare with really good race performance. She is fast and she is beautiful and I think she is a great buy.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell Bloodstock struck for Lot 880, the Group 3-winning mare Karavali (Nadeem), for $480,000 on behalf of Aquis Farm.

Aquis Farm is launching the stud careers of a number of new stallions in 2019 across its three-state operation, with Victorian newcomer Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar) set to cover the five-time winner and Group 1-performed Karavali.

Bleu Roche sets sales ring alight earlyStakes-winning filly Bleu Roche (Fastnet Rock) could race on in the

spring but Widden Stud’s leading sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) looms as the most likely mating should she be retired at the end of this season.

Yulong Investments made an early statement on day one of the Gold Coast sale by going to $600,000 to secure the Matt Laurie-trained filly, who has won twice from eight starts.

Rosemont Stud’s Anthony Mithen also made a strong play for the three-year-old but could not withstand the sales ring clout wielded by Yulong Investments’ Yuesheng Zhang.

Catalogued as Lot 809 as part of the Newgate Consignment, Bleu Roche was a $230,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase by her trainer Matt Laurie in 2017. Bleu Roche won the Red Roses Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington last spring to dramatically enhance her value and she is one of two winners for the juvenile stakes winner Esprit De Bleu (Littleexpectations).

“She is a good, fast mare and we will probably put her back in work and see how she goes as to whether we serve her or not - we will just see how she comes up,” Yulong Investments’ Sam Fairgray said.

“Either way, we are happy to have a mare of that quality and if she leaves progeny like herself they will bring a lot of money in the sales ring.”

Yulong Investments, who will stand first season sire Grunt (O’Reilly) as its foundation stallion at its Victorian stud this year, has quickly amassed a broodmare band numbering 140.

“We want to buy a few more mares for Grunt and add some quality mares. We are looking to add to our ever-growing broodmare band,” Fairgray added.

“Each year we will keep adding onto that and selling off a few.”

$283,500 in stallion nominationsto help Angland

Meanwhile, $283,500 was raised in aid of quadriplegic jockey Tye Angland after eight donated stallion nominations were auctioned last night.

Musk Creek Farm led the way after buying a nomination to Arrowfield Stud’s Dundeel (High Chaparral) for $100,000 while Widden Stud paid $55,000 for a service to Capitalist (Written Tycoon).

Ultima Horse Club bought the nomination to Coolmore-based shuttler Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) for $27,000, with Bangalore Stud’s Julia Ritchie as under bidder.

Nominations to Press Statement (Hinchinbrook), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Sidestep (Exceed And Excel), Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) and Encryption (Lonhro) were also sold.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said: “It is amazing that the industry gets together in a time of need and combine as one.

“We were thrilled with the result and we are grateful for the opportunity to be apart of it. Tye has been a huge part of Magic Millions over the past few years and the industry owes it to him to help him in the right direction.”

Quality to the fore on day oneThere were 168 horses sold yesterday at an average of $168,646, up

slightly on last year’s figure, while the median jumped to $70,000, up from $51,000 in 2018. The clearance rate was sitting at 81 per cent last night.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said the market highlighted the thirst for quality young mares.

“We offered a greater quantity of horses in the race fillies section last year, so the gross is down, but when you look at the numbers, the average is up and the clearance rate is at 80 per cent, which is huge for a day when there is plenty of expectation out there,” Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“To have a $176,000 average for race fillies and maiden mares is an amazing sale and we are pleased with where it is at. But I think there is still value out there and the people who kept their lists long were buying very well.

“As I’ve said for the past week there is a big appetite for quality horses and that was seen again in the ring today.”

Bhima Thoroughbreds sold eight lots on day one at an average of $147,375, with principal Mike Fleming suggesting the figures backed up the overall market’s focus on high-end quality breeding stock.

“The quality and cream is rising to the top and the top is where people want to play,” Fleming said.

Aquis Farm chief executive Shane McGrath said the market had been strong despite some consternation pre-sale about the depth of the buying bench assembled on the Gold Coast.

“It is funny, I have been here (in Australia) for 22 years now and I have attended sales all around the world,” McGrath said.

“The morning before the sale everyone says there isn’t enough people here and the big mares aren’t going to make their money.

“But you walk in there and try and buy one and you will soon find out who is there.”

Day two starts at 10am today.

Where the money went…Lot 855 Gift Of PowerPower (Oasis Dream) - Capital Diamond (Lucky Unicorn)Bought by Rosemont Stud for $800,000Consigned by Dormello Stud

“I thought she would have made seven figures and that would have been too much for me, but we all said under seven figures she is reasonable value and we are here to buy value. For that family that looks like value,” said Anthony Mithen of Rosemont Stud. “We’ve got a little bit of the family with True Excelsior, who is stakes placed and a bit of a jewel in our crown and I think this is next level. She is a Group 2 winner, balanced, medium sized, attractive - just the type of mare you want to put into your broodmare collection.

“I don’t know if she will race on, I had not thought about it. But looking at her and seeing her looking in such great shape and talking to Graeme Rogerson, who assumed we would race on with her, he has encouraged me to put her down the straight at Flemington. We’ll have a few beers tonight and have a think about it.

“We have a breeding right in I Am Invincible and she would be well suited to him so I would say if she goes to stud he will be top of the pops in terms of breeding.”

Graeme Rogerson of Dormello said: “Sir Patrick was in the Group that owned her. My granddaughter didn’t want to sell her, she wanted to bid on her. We all had an agreement that we would sell her at the end of her four-year-old year. She is a very good mare - I thought she would have made a little bit more.

“Sir Patrick Hogan said that if he was ten years younger they wouldn’t have bought her. She is a lovely filly and a direct descent of the Eight Carat family, which is hard to get in on.”

Lot 1874Ellicazoom Testa Rossa (Perugino) - Ellicorsam (Fimiston)Bought by Phoenix Thoroughbreds for $800,000Consigned by Kitchwin Hills

Agent Dermot Farrington, who was acting for Phoenix Thoroughbreds, said: “She was bought as a broodmare but she could race again, she has an entry there (for the Tattersall’s Tiara). We might give it a whirl. She vetted clean and we might try and win while she is going well this prep.” No stallion has been determined for Ellicazoom. “We have also bought a nice mare earlier to go to Aclaim, a Group 2 winner (Sedanzer for $340,000).”

Lot 912Nuclear Blitz Sepoy (Elusive Quality) - Miss Atom Bomb (Encosta De Lago)Bought by James Harron Bloodstock Elite Mares Partnership for $600,000Consigned by Bhima Thoroughbreds

James Harron said: “She is really what I would call a collector’s item. The family is in amazing hands and has been bred to the best stallions, not just in Australia but around the world, and it is very hard to access. I saw her as a yearling and I kick myself for not buying her as a yearling because she has been beautiful all the way. She has been bought for a partnership - and we have been targeting some of these high-quality mares. We will have a chat to the partners to see where we send her (this season) but she has a million options.”

Mike Fleming of Bhima Thoroughbreds said: “We sold her as a yearling and made $300,000. With her page, she is probably one of the only ways you can get into that (Winx) family. The fillies are coming to auction less and less, so it was a good result.”

Lot 943Sexy Eyes Written Tycoon (Iglesia) - Hidden Savings (Secret Savings)Bought by Suman Hedge Bloodstock for $650,000Consigned by Blue Sky Premium Consignment

Suman Hedge said: “We identified her as one of the best physicals at the sale, a queen, and she was the one we remembered and the one we were talking about every day when we got back home. I am obviously extremely familiar with the pedigree, being by Written Tycoon, and we just thought she was a lovely mare to start off with. She is going to Zoustar, another horse I am familiar with. She is an easy mare to mate, being such a good type. If you buy those fast mares who have got open pedigrees, it gives you a lot of options.”

King’s Champ to Rosehill The blue-blooded King’s Champ, a son of Newgate’s first-season sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor) out of the champion mare Yosei (Invincible Spirit), is set to take his chance in the two-year-old handicap (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday after breaking his maiden at Scone earlier this month. "This is a good two-year-old race for this time of year," trainer Gerald Ryan said of the weekend’s contest. "There is not a big turnaround and he needs to get his prize-money up to get into the better races. It's only a couple of months until the new season three-year-old races."

Oaks for Angel Of Heaven Kris Lees has confirmed Angel Of Heaven (Redoute’s Choice) will be accepted for the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) at Doomben on Saturday. The filly has reportedly come through her second to Fun Fact (The Factor) in Saturday’s Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m) without any problems and she is set to be joined in the weekend’s Group 1 contest by stable companion Aliferous (Hinchinbrook), who booked her place in the line up with a strong gallop at the Gold Coast yesterday. The Tony Pike-trained Our Intrigue (Showcasing)

could sneak in the 16th and final spot for the Queensland Oaks having worked well over 1400 metres at Doomben yesterday morning.

Mr Quickie to Derby Mr Quickie (Shamus Award) is set to travel to Brisbane for the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) after impressing trainer Phillip Stokes with his right-handed gallops at Pakenham. The progressive gelding has reportedly rebounded well from his third in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville earlier this month. "Usually when you get them home you can see they've had a run, but not him," Stokes said. "We gave him a week in the water walker and he's been working the reverse way and handling it well, changing his lead legs. We know he runs the 2500 (metres) out and he's in good order and I feel he's got another run in him, so why not give it a go."

Stradbroke for Manuel Group 1 winner Manuel (Commands) has dispelled doubts about his fitness and is set to tackle the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) after winning a 1000 metre trial at the Gold Coast yesterday. The Tony McEvoy-trained gelding landed the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in February but disappointed when last of 13 in the Doomben 10,000 at his last start. "We went all over him and could find nothing wrong.

Maybe it was just one of those days," McEvoy said. "Michael Cahill rode Manuel for the first time and said he felt strong. Michael said he certainly wouldn't talk me out of the Stradbroke. So that is the way we will go provided he is well after the trial."

McEvoy on Trekking In other Stradbroke Handicap news, Kerrin McEvoy has been locked in as the rider for the Godolphin-raced Trekking (Street Cry) for the Eagle Farm contest on June 8. McEvoy has also secured the rides aboard Prince Fawaz (Fastnet Rock) in the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Carif (So You Think) in the Queensland Derby, while he is set to miss this Saturday through suspension.

Second Australian start for Bag Raider French import Bag Raider (Bago) will step out for his second Australian start at Caulfield on Saturday having made the perfect start to life in Victoria with victory at Bendigo earlier this month. The five-year-old will take his place in a benchmark 78 race over 1600 metres, bypassing a heat of the VRC-CRV Winter Championship for which he was also nominated for by trainer Scott Cameron. "Luckily everything panned out," Cameron said of the Bendigo success. "After 18 months off the scene, it was a big effort from the horse and my staff to get him there."

Home By Midnightto Caulfield Home By Midnight (Domesday) looks set to swerve a tilt at Saturday’s W J McKell Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Rosehill in favour of the Banjo Paterson Series Heat 3 (2000m) at Caulfield. Trainer Patrick Payne, who has had the New Zealand import for his last two starts, said the forecast rain in Melbourne is likely to ensure the multiple Group 1 placegetter heads there as opposed to the Listed contest at Rosehill.

Wolfe to spell Co-trainer Adrian Bott has confirmed that progressive gelding Wolfe (Novellist) will not press on to the Brisbane Winter Carnival and will instead head for a spell. The three-year-old, who landed a 2000 metre handicap at Randwick on Saturday to take his tally to four wins from five starts, will enjoy a rest with a view to returning in the spring.

Lane and Prince to spell Star sprinter Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) is set to join stayer Steel Prince (Nathaniel) in the paddock with their spring goals confirmed. Santa Ana Lane was recently chosen for the TAB's slot in The Everest (1200m) while Steel Prince earned a start in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with victory in Saturday's Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m). "Steel Prince headed off to the paddock today and will have a month there and then we'll look to map a path, whether he has three or four runs before the Melbourne Cup," Sam Freedman, assistant to his trainer/father Anthony, said. "Knowing we're in the race we'll probably look to protect whatever weight he has and keep him down in the weights. He's still going to have to improve next preparation to be a real live chance in a race like the Melbourne Cup."

Last chance for Boom Time2017 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Boom Time (Flying Spur) will return to the Melbourne track this Saturday in a bid to rediscover his best form. Co-trainer and the sole owner of the rising

eight-year-old David Hayes said on Tuesday that, on the back of an 18-length trouncing at his most previous start, Boom Time was racing for his career in a heat of the Banjo Paterson series over 2000 metres this weekend. "It’s his grand final," Hayes told Racing.com. "If he doesn’t fire, we’ll most probably retire him. His trackwork suggests he can run well but his recent form is atrocious. He’s an seven-year-old stallion so maybe he’s looking to do other things. But he’s had a lot of rehab and he did reinjure his tendon last spring so we’re mindful of that."

Valley work underwayMoonee Valley’s $2 billion redevelopment is officially underway, with the first enablement works conducted yesterday. The redevelopment plans were first unveiled in November 2017 and will implement a range of significant changes, including the construction of a new grandstand moved from the original position, a re-oriented racetrack, as well as housing developments on site. “We’ve been working on this project for ten years and to finally be putting a shovel in the dirt, it’s a landmark day for the club, a key milestone,” Moonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael Browell told Racing.com. “We return to racing on August 3, it’s a nice break that we’ve had, we’ve done a major renovation on the track to make sure it’s at its best through this spring carnival leading into the 100th Cox Plate next October.”

Roaring Lion book closed Cambridge Stud has closed the 2019 book for their freshman shuttler Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy), who is set to arrive at the New Zealand operation after he has completed his northern hemisphere stallion duties at Tweenhills Farm & Stud in Britain. “From the moment the horse was released to the market, the response from breeders in both New Zealand and Australia was immediate and we are now closing his book,”

Cambridge Stud chief executive Henry Plumptre said. We are delighted with the response to all the stallions and appreciate the endorsement from breeders across New Zealand and Australia.” Bosson reflects on stellar seasonOpie Bosson has reflected on a stellar season and credited his wife and Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis for his help in getting the leading jockey back in the saddle. Bosson’s season was capped when he surpassed the record for the number of Group 1 winners ridden by a New Zealand jockey previously held by Lance O’Sullivan, who has 62 elite level victories to his name. Bosson won six Group 1s this season, two each on Melody Belle (Commands), Yourdeel (Dundeel), and Danzdanzdance (Mastercraftsman). “It wasn’t a great start but Dave (Ellis) and my wife (Emily) helped to motivate me (to lose the weight) and without them I probably wouldn’t have been able to get back on track,” Bosson said. “I always wanted to get back, but I knew how hard it was to get the weight off and I needed them to give me a push. It took a lot of hard work up at the farm (Te Akau Stud) training with Dave.”

Asia

Purton looks to keep rolling Fresh from a landmark six-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday, red-hot jockey Zac Purton is hoping to keep the ball rolling at today’s Happy Valley meeting. Purton has ridden an astonishing 13 winners from his last 25 rides in Hong Kong and will partner last-start winner Le Terroir (Star Witness) in the Class 4 Ho Chung River Handicap (1200m), the fourth race on today’s card. “I think the draw (2) helps him a lot, from those awkward gates he had to do a little bit of work to get into a handy spot, whereas from this draw he should be able to get there more comfortably and hopefully that means he’s got a little bit more to give but the form out of his races has been solid,” Purton said.

Grit seeking hat-trick Joao Moreira’s four-timer at Sha Tin on Sunday was only a footnote alongside Purton’s successes but the in-form jockey is once again booked to partner the hat-trick seeking True Grit (Wanted) in today’s Class 3 Shan Pui River Handicap (1650m) at Happy Valley. “True Grit looks good,” trainer John Size said. “He seems to be putting it all together now, he was quite a slow learner I thought early in the piece - with his trials and even at the races - but now he’s worked it out and he looks like he’s going to go further. He was one of the horses that went up there (Conghua) quite early and he seems to have made the adaption: when he started to race from there he ran well, so I’ve left him there.”

International

Five for Cable BayWoodside Park Stud shuttler Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) was provided with his fifth first-crop winner in the northern hemisphere yesterday courtesy of London Ela’s (2 f ex Guiletta by Dalakhani) victory in the Premio Duccia Di Buoninsegna (1400m) at Rome. The filly proved adept on the soft surface to beat Keep On Search (Pounced), with Halo’s Wonder (Authorized) back in third. Cable Bay is currently standing at Highclere Stud in Britain for a fee of £6,500, and London Ela joins the likes of stakes-placed Visayas as winners for the stallion.

Juddmonte stallions available for SH coveringsJuddmonte have once again made their stallions available to cover to southern hemisphere time, with Frankel (Galileo), whose black-type horses include Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Miss Fabulass and the Group 1-placed Frankely Awesome, spearheading the five-strong roster at a fee of £80,000. The hugely exciting Kingman (Invincible Spirit), whose first foal to sell in Australia made $260,000 at

the Magic Millions National Sale last week, will be available at £70,000, while newcomer Expert Eye (Acclamation) can be bred to at a fee of £12,000. Oasis Dream (Green Desert) and Bated Breath (Dansili) complete the list of stallions at £20,000 and £5,000 respectively.

Nine for CurlinHill 'n' Dale Farms stallion Curlin (Smart Strike) was provided with his ninth Grade 1 winner on Monday courtesy of Vino Rosso’s (4 c ex Mythical Bride by Street Cry) victory in the Santa Anita Gold Cup (Gr 1, 10f). The Todd Pletcher-trained entire showed a tenacious attitude to get the better of last-start Grade 1 winner Gift Box (Twirling Candy) by three quarters of a length, while there was a further five and a quarter lengths back to Lone Sailor (Majestic Warrior) back in third. Curlin is currently standing at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Kentucky for a fee of US$175,000. Click here to view the replay.

Three for Temple CityBolo (7 g ex Aspen Mountain by Chief Seattle) caused an upset in the Shoemaker Mile Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita on Monday, providing Spendthrift Farm stallion Temple City (Dynaformer) with his third Grade 1 winner. Having just his second start after a near two-year lay off, the gelding capped a remarkable training performance from Carla Gaines to make all and beat River Boyne (Dandy Man) by a length and a quarter, with Bowies Hero (Artie Schiller) another nose away in third. Bolo’s victory earned him an all-fees paid berth into the Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) in November, while he joined Miss Temple City and Annals Of Time as elite level winners for Temple City. Click here to view the replay.

Vasilika strikes in GamelyElsewhere at Santa Anita on Monday, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Vasilika (5 m Skipshot -

La Belle Marquet by Marquetry) continued her remarkable run of form when running out a ready winner of the Gamely Stakes (Gr 1, 9f). The mare has tasted defeat just once in her past 13 outings and again proved too good for her rivals, beating Rymska (Le Havre) by a length with Ahimsa (Animal Kingdom) another half length away in third. Monday’s victory was the Vasilika’s second at Grade 1 level following her Rodeo Drive Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) success last year. Click here to view the replay.

Fire goes two betterHaving finished third 12 months ago, Grecian Fire (5 g Unusual Heat - Maddie's Odyssey, by Kitten's Joy) went two places better when running out an authoritative winner of the All American Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Golden Gate Fields on Monday night. The gelding surged clear of his rivals up the straight to beat the fast finishing Builder (Gio Ponti) by a length and a quarter, with Touched By Autism (Sierra Sunset) a further two and a half lengths adrift in third. It was the first graded victory for the son of Unusual Heat (Nureyev), who died in 2017 due to complications from arthritis-induced laminitis. Click here to view the replay.

EBF deadline approachesThe deadline to register yearlings to the European Breeders Fund (EBF) by a stallion not registered to the EBF is on May 31. “Owners and breeders looking to either campaign or sell a horse to Europe should check that it is EBF nominated as over 80 per cent of two-year-old maiden and novice races are confined to EBF eligible horses,” Kerry Murphy of the EBF said. “In addition your horse will become eligible to compete for a pool of over €5 million available in added prize-money. This nomination stage largely relates to horses by stallions standing in the US, Japan etc.” The fee is US$600 or equivalent in sterling or euro.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) celebrated its centenary year with the announcement of the Basil Nolan jnr scholarship at an event on

the Gold Coast on Monday night.More than 200 breeders and industry

figures were present as TBA president Basil Nolan acknowledged the award that was created and funded by Aushorse, and named in honour of his late son.

The scholarship will be available to graduates of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia's traineeship programme, Fast Track, allowing one graduate every year to study overseas.

Aushorse chairman Antony Thompson said the scholarship continued the organisation's commitment to the future of thoroughbred breeding in Australia.

"The Fast Track programme is only in its second year and already it's been a real success, attracting some great young people to the industry," Thompson said.

"This prize will provide a graduate the opportunity to expand their knowledge base and broaden their experience, allowing them to go overseas and study on the Irish National Stud course or a similar programme.

"The Aushorse board are delighted to name the scholarship after Basil who was a wonderful man and embodied so much that is great about the Australian breeding industry."

Basil Nolan jnr died in a farming accident on his family's Raheen Stud last November.

Among the speakers at the centenary

celebration were two of this year's Fast Track trainees, Lachie Pethica and Alyssa Pickles, who talked about their experiences and how the programme gave them a start in the breeding industry.

Journalist Michael Hedge, who wrote a history of the TBA for its 100th year, told the audience about the founding of the organisation and its first president, Hugh Denision, a successful breeder and businessman who was forced to change his name after reports of his huge betting wins embarrassed his family.

Basil Nolan also paid tribute to the breeders who began the TBA.

"Back 100 years ago a group of breeders had the foresight to see that if they worked together, that if they united with one voice, they would be able to change breeding for the better," he said.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia celebrates100 years with announcement of scholarship

"We owe those founders a debt of gratitude because TBA has been a powerful voice that has benefited breeders these past 100 years."

Many of the responsibilities for TBA remain the same now as they did back in 1919, according to TBA chief executive Tom Reilly.

"The body has an important job as an advocate for the industry, dealing with government in particular,” he said.

"Back in its early days it had to get politicians to grant cheaper train travel for yearlings going to sales, while recently we've been dealing with issues such as visas for overseas workers, federal funding for research and development and export protocols.

"While the issues may have changed, the need for a strong and united industry voice has not and never will."

What’s McDonald’s story? Well, we could begin with her notable training performance ten days ago

to win a 3480 metre Hurdle race with Tara Dreaming, who hadn’t raced for nine months and not for more than 16 months prior to joining her team last year from the yard

of a prominent Sydney trainer and former champion jockey, who remains in the ownership.

A reasonable effort by any measure but even more noteworthy when achieved against the backdrop of moving stables just six weeks ago, mothering two young boys and carrying on with a good man down - the man who just happens to be her husband and who would ordinarily have been riding Tara Dreaming in his work and probably on race day.

Or we could begin with the remarkable list of people she worked for before branching out on her own in 2015 - from the famous Houlahan and Freedman racing families to such enigmatic and engaging characters as Mick Kent and Jim Conlan.

Or we could focus on the infectious passion she has for the game and the refreshingly, perhaps even faith restoring regard she has for those trainers who guided her along the way. Good heavens, she even speaks somewhat fondly of Anthony Freedman!

However, it might be easier to tell the story

in a chronological sense. McDonald, 35, grew up in Penola and her parents - in something of an increasingly familiar theme in racing these days - had no interest in racing. Her interest in horses stemmed - again in similarly recognisable fashion - from pony club, hunting and polocrosse.

“I remember saying I’d never work in racing because I wouldn’t want to muck out boxes,” she said. Thousands of mucked out boxes were to come after she moved to Melbourne as an 18 year-old with not much more than a backpack. She managed to get a job with the

Freedmans, first at Caulfield and later at Markdel on the Mornington peninsula.

“I had no idea, I didn’t even know who Lee Freedman was,” she said. “I turned up to work in my pony club outfit and everyone fell about laughing but I thought it was wonderful.

“The lifestyle of the city but with the horses so close by and I had a really good time working with horses like Makybe Diva, Mummify and Alinghi. I probably didn’t really appreciate it at the time but I do now.”

Initially she didn’t ride a lot for the Freedmans. “Anthony (Freedman) told me I had an over-inflated opinion of my riding ability and…he was 100 per cent right,” she said.

Typically she took that as inspiration, in a recurring theme from all those she worked for, to improve her riding skills.

Further inspiration was to come working for Jim Houlahan and later Houlahan’s daughter Fran and husband Brian Johnston, as well as from Kent and Conlan.

“I went to Jim about a year before he retired from training. He was an amazing man and I could listen to him talk all day about horses or life in general,” McDonald said.

“Jim and his wife Molly, Fran and Brian obviously played a big role in my love for jumps racing. With Fran and Brian, it was a fun place to work. They looked after me no end and I learned a lot.”

McDonald is similarly thankful for her experience with Conlan and Kent. “Obviously Jim had a few run-ins with stewards but I found him a marvel,” she said. “A horseman from head to toe, a good bloke and a good human being. You could go to him with any problem, any issue and you’d walk away feeling good.

“And Mick (Kent). I loved working there. Whatever you want to be in life, he wants you to be the best you can be. I’d been happy just poking along with no massive aspirations to

train until I worked for him. He has unbelievable knowledge. You could ask him a question

and get a different answer to the previous time you’d asked because he’d have done further research in the interim.

“Mick can watch a horse walk and pick up if it’s two millimetres short in the off hind. He won’t stop until he’s got a horse right.”

Kent entrusted McDonald with the travel of many of his better horses. Among others, she accompanied the 2011 Group 1 ATC Oaks winner Absolutely to Sydney and the following year took Unusual Suspect to Dubai.

“That was an awesome experience although a bit of a disaster as he didn’t perform to his best. He didn’t settle in by himself, he needed another horse with him,” she said.

McDonald strapped Unusual Suspect in that year’s Melbourne Cup before flying at 11pm that night, with aforementioned husband Lee Horner, to the UK where they worked for three months for multiple Grade 1 winning jumps trainer Alan King.

Horner, 28, last year’s Australian Steeplechase

winning jockey, is recovering from a third concussion in eight months after being unseated from Murphy’s Delight at Warrnambool on May 2.

“Lee has a further concussion test on June 7 and hopefully will be cleared to ride track

work and then he’ll look to get back to riding in Highweights later in the year with The Jericho Cup the goal,” McDonald said.

In the interim, McDonald has been left to ride the work while Horner has been the “stay at home” dad to sons Joseph, 5, and Alfie, 1, while he also scours races from all over Australasia in search for good jumping prospects - which is a constant whether fit or unfit - and a process which found the Casterton winner Tara Dreaming, who was originally with Kevin Moses.

The couple now have eight horses in work in stables opposite Dan O’Sullivan and adjacent to the racecourse at Ballarat - a move from previous set-ups in Cranbourne, Warrnambool and Balnarring chiefly driven by finding the most economically viable location.

However, Ballarat, they suspect, might be more than that. “We only moved six weeks ago

but I think Ballarat is the place,” McDonald said.“You can get a horse fit here almost without

realising it. To me it’s like Warrnambool, just without the beach. The training surfaces are first rate and there’s everything you need here and it’s attracting a lot of high profile trainers.”

McDonald and Horner are not necessarily keen to dramatically add to their numbers but, like any training establishment, the door is open to new owners.

“I think our strength is the individual time we can spend with the horses. The attention to detail, picking up the little quirks. Every horse gets their time without us being in a rush,” McDonald said.

Recent New Zealand acquisition Flying Agent, a Warrnambool hurdle trial winner last Thursday, and the city flat winner Californiagrandcru who was formerly trained by the Snowdens, may build the stable’s success. Flying Agent was prepared, in New Zealand,

by Brian and Shane Anderton who intend to bring last season’s Great Northern and Grand National Hurdle winner Jackfrost to Melbourne and stable him with McDonald and Horner.

Doubling Danzig (Northern Dancer) close up in pedigrees has become a very successful formula for producing stakes

winners and we saw two examples at Eagle Farm last Saturday - Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m) winner Fun Fact (The Factor) and BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Strasbourg (I Am Invincible).

Interestingly, both are out of mares by the Kitchwin Hills Stud stallion Dane Shadow

(Danehill), a noted sire of race fillies and a stallion with great maternal strength in his background as he is out of champion filly Slight Chance (Centaine).

Strasbourg, who is expected to press on to what looks like being an ultra-competitive J.J. Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on June 8, prevailed by only a neck last Saturday in the Sires’ and is again likely to meet runner-up Accession (Brazen Beau) and third placed Garibaldi (I Am Invincible), who was a further three-quarters of

Strasbourg captures Sires’ Produce in Brisbane

a length away in a time of 1:22.16. The last 600 metres was covered in 35.20.

For Strasbourg the Sires’ was his seventh start but only his second victory following the NJC Max Lees Classic (900m) at Newcastle last December. Since then, though, he had registered three stakes placings including a second to Dubious (Not a Single Doubt) in the BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Doomben at his previous start.

Bred in NSW by Yarraman Park Stud Pty Ltd in partnership, Strasbourg is justifying his

$750,000 price tag when sold at the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to a partnership which includes Newgate SF, the China Horse Club, Winstar Farm and others.

Page 24: Sales: fireworks at Magic Millions - anzbloodstocknews.com€¦ · -World Class Stable and Office Headquarters - Architect designed - Equipped w/ 80 boxes, office suites, board room,

The handsome colt is stakes winner number 47 for Yarraman Park Stud’s sensational sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and takes rank among his single-season-record of 28 black type winners to date for 2018/19.

Such has been the success of I Am Invincible that in 2019 he will be the most expensive stallion standing in Australia, his fee rising from last season’s $192,500 (inc GST) to $247,500 (inc GST) this spring.

Strasbourg is the second foal out of his dam Danish Spy (Dane Shadow) whose first, a 2015 filly by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), died, while her next foal, another I Am Invincible colt, was a $300,000 purchase for James Harron at the 2019 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January. Danish Spy then missed to I Am Invincible but returned to him again last spring and is believed in foal to an early cover.

While some way short of top class, Danish Spy was a handy and versatile performer - a winner of five races including two in Adelaide where she was also stakes placed. She won from 1200m metres to 2000 metres and earned $143,620 in prize-money.

Super Snooper (Zeditave), Strasbourg’s second dam, won four races and three as a juvenile from distances between 1000 metres and 1600 metres, while her highlight victory came in the MVRC Crown Lager Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Moonee Valley.

This Newhaven Park Stud product, a half-sister to stakes winners

Watch (Marauding) and Agent Provocative (Imperial Prince), is a 100 per cent winner producer as her eight foals to race are all winners, headed by Melbourne Listed scorer Forest Spy (Shinko Forest), Danish Spy, Melbourne winners Warshawsky (Fasliyev) and Show Bling (Flying Spur) plus Bend (Grand Lodge), a winner in Sydney. The quality of her foals is well above average, not surprising in view of the family from which she descends.

Strasbourg’s third dam Peeping (Todman) was one of the most precocious juvenile fillies of the 1977/78 season, taking the VRC Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 2, 1000m) and the AJC Widden Stakes (Listed, 1000m), while she was also second in the STC Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 900m) and AJC Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) in a busy early spring campaign.

Peeping was inbred for speed, by Todman (Star Kingdom) from Sonnambula (Wilkes) with her third dam Star Ocean (Star Kingdom) - a sister to both Todman and Noholme out of Stanley Wootton’s famous import Oceana (Colombo).

Todman, winner of the first Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) in a canter in 1957, along with champion sire Wilkes (Court Martial), both also appear in the female pedigree of Strasbourg’s maternal grandsire Dane Shadow, so the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner of 2019 has a very powerful pedigree to fit him as a future sire and one further boosted by two more lines of Star Kingdom (Stardust) coming through the dam of his father I Am Invincible.

VERDICT In an open race it might be worth chacing BULLISH GLORY,who returned from an absence with a respectable fifth over 1m1f

on his recent stable debut and remains very well handicapped on some of last year’sform. Second choice is Family Leader, who was strong in the finish over 1m on hislatest outing and now tackles a new trip. Clement Legend and Happy Rockyalso make the shortlist.

VERDICT Shamport could be a tough nut to crack if the first-time visorhas a positive effect but there might be more to come from LE

TERROIR, who overcome a wide stall to win over C&D for Zac Purton five weeksago and has a much more favourable berth today. Brave Baby has tough draw butmay also feature.

BETTING FORECAST: 7-2iFirst Responder, 4iCoby Oppa, 9-2iWaldorf, 11-2iJollyConvergence, 10iPrivate Rocket, 12iBreeders’ Star, 14iVery Rich Man,20iConfucius Day, Gintoki, Mighty Maverick, Mr Genuine, 25iPowermax.

SPOTLIGHTBreeders’ Star Came fast and late to score over C&D in this grade in February and

he moved into Class 2 on the back of that; failed to fire in that grade and now backto Class 3 but yet to recapture his form.

Waldorf Has taken off recently and scored over C&D in his last two starts;handicapper raises him another 6lb but in this form he has to be taken seriouslyon going for the hat-trick.

Mr Genuine Failed to strike last season and no joy in his opening 11 starts thisseason; handicapper doing all he can and his mark is in free-fall but he’s yet totake advantage of it.

Coby Oppa Five starts and two wins in Hong Kong; looks progressive and he’s wonon both the turf and the dirt, scoring on the all-weather this month; should have arole to play in this

Powermax Came good over C&D in October but he’s gone off the boil since thatsuccess and his latest two efforts were poor; needs to find more to take this.

First Responder 0-6 in Hong Kong but did show up well in his penultimate startwhen second over C&D; failed to build on it this month and now more is needed toget off the mark.

Private Rocket Hong Kong debut over C&D this month was a pleasing run, stayingon in the closing stages to finish fifth; will have learned plenty and he should buildon that here.

Gintoki Four starts in Hong Kong but yet to trouble the judge; doesn’t seem to beprogressing, his best finish being on Hong Kong debut; more is needed.

Jolly Convergence Won two of his last three starts, both over C&D, and nowmoves back to Class 3; won in this grade off a higher mark in the past and there’sno reason he can’t hold his own in this.

Mighty Maverick Dual 6f winner towards the end of last season but yet to find thatsort of form in 13 starts this campaign; should be showing a lot more off this mark.

Very Rich Man Came good over C&D in March but that pushed him into this gradeand he failed to build on it in his next two starts; handicapper looks to be incharge.

Confucius Day Six starts in Hong Kong but yet to get involved; latest effort over 7fwas disappointing and more is needed now dropping back to 6f.

VERDICT Coby Oppa should still have improvement to come and he looksprogressive, having won two from his opening five starts in Hong

Kong but the preference is for JOLLY CONVERGENCE who has really found hisform again and is still well handicapped on last season’s win. Waldorf looks to begoing from strength to strength and he has claims despite the latest 6lb rise from thehandicapper.

SPOTLIGHTHarmony Hero 7f winner on just his second start in Hong Kong but surprisingly

unable to build on it; in the mix over this trip in his latest starts and could have asay in this despite top weight.

Mega Red Won two of his opening three races in Hong Kong but that was twoseasons ago and he’s just not been in the same form; five starts this season couldhave been better and more is needed

Heavenly Thought 0-8 in Hong Kong and not going forward; best finishingposition was seventh and he needs to raise his game if he’s to play a part in this.

Rickfield Caused a shock when getting off the mark for this season over C&D lastmonth; that was an improved effort and he needs to build on that here under a 5lbrise; could have a say.

Xiang Bai Qi 0-14 in Hong Kong but ran his best race of this season over C&D thismonth; has dropped far enough in the weights to give himself a chance if he canbuild on it.

Let’s Take It Easy Came good over C&D in November, for which he received a5lb rise; that was enough to see him struggle in his next six starts and he needs tofind more.

World Famous Three starts in Hong Kong and already struggling to get involved;now steps up to the extended mile hoping for improvement.

Merrygowin Dropped to Class 4 in February and made it pay with a comfortablevictory over C&D; now back in this grade and he needs to find more to come goodagain.

Tangmere 0-7 in Hong Kong and struggling to get competitive; handicapper yet torelease his grip so he needs to raise his game to take a hand in this.

True Grit On a roll, winning his latest two starts over C&D; handicapper nowpushes him into Class 3 for the first time but he’s in top order and respectedunder Moreira.

Flying Quest Scored over C&D in Class 4 company this season and also scoredover 1m 1f in this grade in November; handicapper has been in charge since andmore is needed off this mark

Universal Go Go Dual winner this season, including over C&D; sound effort againover C&D this month and that means he now takes on Class 3 company for thefirst time; needs more.

Kungfumaster Panda Just three starts in Hong Kong but yet to find his form;started at huge odds each time, ran accordingly and finished in the rear; plentymore is needed.

VERDICT True Grit is in top order and has every chance of landing thehat-trick now taking on Class 3 opposition but a chance is taken

on XIANG BAI QI building on his recent start over C&D where he ran second toLucky Girl. Rickfield showed more in his latest start to score over C&D last monthand now resumes off a 5lb higher mark.

even with the 5lb rise, but a chance is taken that now the handicapper has relentedPOLYMER LUCK can regain the winning thread as he’s now back on the samemark as when he won in December. BETTING FORECAST: 3iHong Kong Bet, 9-2iDream Come True, 11-2iMagicLegend, 13-2iMr Right, 8iFrustrated, 10iForza Angel, 12iBreeders’ Sky, HealthyLuck, 16iEncore Boy, 20iBear Again, 33iArdenode.

VERDICT Hong Kong Bet should still have improvement to come afterjust three starts and he has claims on the back of his recent C&D

success but the vote goes to MAGIC LEGEND who should relish this drop to Class3 after facing some stiff assignments last season. It looks significant that Zac Purtontakes the ride on Dream Come True and he rates the danger.
