Dear Salem Arts Festival guests:

On behalf of the City of Salem, welcome to the Salem Arts Festival! This year’s

festival features a variety of performances and exhibits that showcase the talent of Salem.

The Salem Arts Festival gives us a chance to show off our history and diversity

through our vibrant arts community and our bustling downtown. And we’re proud of

both. While enjoying the many talents of Salem residents, I hope you also take some time

to enjoy the diverse and eclectic offerings of Salem’s downtown businesses. Thanks to

your continued support and interest, the Salem Arts Festival keeps growing and adding

new talent each year.

Special thanks goes out to the Salem Arts Association, Salem Main Streets, Salem

Sounds and all the other groups and individuals who worked hard to organize this year’s

festival.

Over the weekend, I encourage you to take in as much art and as many

performances as possible. Events like the Salem Arts Festival are what make Salem a

great city to live in and visit and I hope you enjoy your time downtown.

Very truly yours,

Kimberley Driscoll

Mayor

Christopher H. WoodAbstract WatercolorGloucester, [email protected] abstract watercolors are: bold, gritty, sensual, and inspired by my mad scientist tendencies. I paint ferociously; this cre-ates real energy within the piece. I paint wet on wet, this allows the colors to mix themselves on the paper, and allows little experiments/accidents to be created within the piece.

I am interested in how these two disciplines combine to create a ‘total’ and immersible psychological experience, both discordant and harmonic. To this end I utilize a multimedia approach to creating art, an expres-sion of philosophical, spiritual, social and psy-chological reactions to the ‘personal’ engage-ment with the world; both the ‘seen’ and the ‘unseen’. This practice is best utilized through multimedia and includes scale model mak-ing, film making, lighting, installation, graphic design, soundscaping and sound manipulation to create the desired immersible psychological experience. I have exhibited both with sound/visual Installation art, video and printed media in London, New York, Europe, Australia, the Far East, and worldwide.

Meet the 2012 Artists’ Row artists!

Fished ImpressionsJoe Higgins • [email protected] Impressions is headed by Joe Higgins, who sells and makes Gyotaku (gee-yo-tah’-koo) which is a Japanese art form traditionally used by fishermen, Japanese nobility, and artists to record the details of the fish they catch. Gyotaku means fish rubbing. The Gyotaku technique uses an actual fish to print an impression onto paper, fabric, or other mediums. This ancient technique is fascinating and the end result is a remarkably original, quality work of art. Joe Higgins will offer free workshops to children throughout the season, teaching this ancient and fascinating art form. All fish used will be cleaned, prepared, and eaten after use off site.
