The 300 MW Sakaka IPP is the first plant in the Saudi national renewable energy program. The plant, located at Al Jouf, will cover an area of 6 square kilometres, which is the equivalent of approximately 1,000 football fields. Sakaka IPP will harness solar energy by utilizing photovoltaic (PV) technology to generate electricity at a world record-breaking tariff of US Cents 2.3417/kWh (8.781 halalas/kWh). The total investment in the project is US $302 million. Through the Sakaka IPP, ACWA Power is pioneering renewable energy projects in the country and contributing to the Saudi national renewable energy programme which aims to produce 9.5GW of renewable energy by 2023. The 300 MW Sakaka IPP is the first plant in the Saudi national renewable energy program.
