Objective Visually highlight the steps to be followed for water sampling an endoscope. Highlight the importance of using aseptic technique for collecting samples. Highlight the importance of wearing PPE’s while water sampling. Highlight the necessary aids for the scope water sampling.
Gastroscope / Colonoscope (Olympus and Pentax)
Bronchoscope (Pentax)
Preparation Cover an Instrument trolley with a sterile drape. Open all required items on to the trolley. With aseptic technique fill all syringes with the sterile water using the gallipot.
Following aseptic technique unload the endoscope on to the trolley after successfully completing cycle in the EWD. Place Vygon connectors onto suction port, biopsy channel and attach three way taps to both Vygon connectors. Take environment swab using culture medium if IC alerts involved, as indicated on microbiology Chart
Using aseptic technique inject 20ml water through the biopsy Channel while holding the tip over the sterile bottle. (Inject another 20cc Air through the channel to completely take the water) Inject another 20ml of water with second syringe into suction channel and draw fluid back into syringe and into a sterile bottle Inject 20ml water with third syringe into the auxiliary channel (if present) while holding tip over the sterile bottle.
Using aseptic technique inject the 20ml water through the Biopsy channel (Sample 1) and suction channel (Sample 2) while holding the tip over the sterile bottle. (Inject 20cc air to remove the water completely).
This is a mono channel bronchoscope, With aseptic technique inject 20ml water through the biopsy channel while holding the tip over the sterile bottle.
Label all bottles appropriately, Fill the microbiology form and send in to the microbiology. (If the samples from a scope suspected of any infectious, indicate in the form.)
Conclusion
The use of a visual aid can prove quality and safe working practice in the water sampling of endoscopes.
