the police. The police respondedrapidly and at around 10:15 a.m.they visited Bismillah Noveltieswhere they encountered thefemale customer still waitinginside the store for her change. She was detained and informedof the reason for her detention.Whilst being escorted to thepolice station she pointed outtwo male persons of darkcomplexion standing in front ofTaisan’s Store, across from theBelize Bank on Burns Avenue, whom she identified as thepersons who gave her the bogusmoney. Upon searching the twopersons, police found a blackplastic bag inside the front pantspocket of one of them. It wasfound to contain the followingfive counterfeit Belize notes (a)two $100 notes #DB006204 (b)one $100 note #DA61221 (c)one $100 note #DA 786750 and(d) one $50 note DE27794. Thesuspects were identified asKareem Grant, 21, Belizeanfisherman, of #114 Neals PenRoad, Belize City and RobertYoung, 22, Belizean laborer, ofa Mahogany Heights address,Belize District. The female was identified asShawn Gardiner, 33, Belizeanhairdresser, of an 8 th Streetaddress in San Ignacio Town. She is likewise known to beresiding on Eve Street in SantaElena Town. Police reports that whileseeking assistance from a femaleofficer to conduct a search of thefemale suspect, an alert detectivereportedly saw when shedropped something under thedesk where she was awaiting tobe searched. The article wasinstantly retrieved in herpresence and found to be anadditional two counterfeit $100notes and two counterfeit $50bills. Following the sequence ofevents and reports from victimswho have so far come forward,

investigators believed that Grantand Young arrived in Cayo onMonday, July 5, and that the firstvictim could have been either theBlue Angels Night Club, whoseowner ended up with a bogus$100 note # DA631221 or,George Devassy, 52, naturalizedBelizean Indian businessman, owner of South Indian Restau-rant located at the Plaza Del RioMall, West Street, San IgnacioTown. While there is no officialreport from Blue AnglesNight Club, George Devassy, ina statement to the policeinformed that at around 9:00p.m. on Monday, July 5, twomale persons of dark complex-ion of whom he gave detaileddescriptions, entered his restau-rant each with a Belikin beer pintin their hand. One of themreportedly ordered two beers, took out a $100 note and handedit to Devassy who reportedlyinformed that he could not makechange. The one with the $100note reportedly asked the otherif he had a smaller note and thiswas when he pulled out the $50bill which was handed toDevassy who returned $44change. The men took theirbeers and left the restaurant. At around 10:30 a.m. thefollowing day, Tuesday, July 6,Devassy visited Bismillah Storewith intention to purchase a pairof tennis. Devassy arrivedshortly after the attempt wasmade to pass a $50 bill atBismillah Novelties. Theincident was reportedly relayedto him by the store owner.Suspecting that he might havebeen a victim of the scam,Devassy pulled out a $50 bill, showed it to the store ownerwho advised him that it was notgenuine. He then walked overto the police station to report thematter. Upon arrival at the policestation Devassy met up with thetwo men who passed the bogus

money on him the previousnight. He promptly pointed themout to the police. Another victim of the bogusmoney is the San Ignacio/SantaElena Town Council. It wasreported that sometime duringthe business day on Tuesday,July 6, an unknown personpaid for services with one ofthe bogus $50 notes at themunicipal traffic department. The undetected bogus moneywas a part of the departmentsTuesday night deposit. It washowever detected by an alertScotia Bank clerk who waschecking the deposit onWednesday morning. Thediscrepancy was brought to theattention of the MunicipalTraffic Manager, KarenFernandez, who in turnrequested for the cashier tosubmit a report in which thecashier informed “I have no clueor suspect who pay with the$50.00 Belize counterfeitcurrency”. A further victim of the scamwas Sarita Tzib, 25, Belizeanvegetable vendor from SanAntonio Village, who operates afruit stall inside the San IgnacioTown market in the SavannahArea. Tzib reported that ataround 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday,July 6, she was at her place ofbusiness when a lady arrived andbought a $14 bottle of coconutoil paying with a $50 bill. Shereportedly gave the lady the$36 change. It was only afterthe lady departed that Tzibrealized the money, bearing

serial number DE 277964, wasbogus. She immediately visitedthe police station to report thematter. As in the case withDevassy, upon arriving at thepolice station Tzib saw theaccused Shawn Gardiner andpointed her out to the police asthe person who gave her thebogus money. The investigation subsequentlyled to the arrest of KareemKenneth Grant, Robert HaroldYoung and Shawn Gardiner allcharged in connection withpossession of counterfeit notes. The trio appeared before SanIgnacio Magistrate, AnnaRachel Montejo, on Wednes-day, July 7, 2010, where they allpleaded not guilty as charged. They were offered and met bailin the sum of one thousanddollars and were ordered toreturn to court on Wednesday,July 28, 2010. San Ignacio police advises thatalthough they might havedisrupted this latest ring, thegeneral public and especially thebusiness community must be onthe constant alert for counterfeitcurrency. The police furtheradvises that in light of the factthat counterfeiters are perfectingthe art, all large notes especially$50 and $100 bills, which seemsto be the denominations ofchoice, should be carefullyinspected to ascertain authentic-ity before acceptance especiallyso at night time. Police reportsthat night clubs with poorlighting conditions are particu-larly susceptible to the scam.

The social event attended byPrime Minister of Belize, Hon.Dean Barrow and otherdignataries, at the Miami BeachHotel on Saturday, June 26, wasabruptly ended when, just asPrime Minister Barrow wasaddressing the gathering, anevacuation order was issued bythe police and hotel officialson the heels of a strange ordorinside the hotel. Subsequent to the incident theMiami Herald reports of thedetention of two person heldin the slaying of a Russian atMiami Beach Resort. The following is the MiamiHerald’s report on the incident Police said surveillance videohelped lead them to the two menaccused of shooting and killinga tourist at a Miami Beachhotel on Saturday.BY: Kelly House:[email protected]: The two suspects in a deadlyMiami Beach hotel shootingattacked their victims withpepper spray before they shotone and escaped out a back door,Miami Beach police say. Police arrested the pair in theshooting death of a Russiantourist Saturday at the MiamiBeach Resort & Spa. A hotelsurveillance camera capturedthem fleeing down back stairs, police said. Duran A. Reed, 25, of Miami, and Turaine Depri Burgess, 21,of Millsboro, Del., are chargedwith second degree murder andarmed robbery in the death of38-year-old Roman Gubanov,of Tver, Russia. Investigators say the shootingwas drug-related. Here’s what happened, according to police: Gubanov and his friend,Andrey Orlov, approachedReed and Burgess the day beforethe shooting, looking to buycocaine. They agreed to make a drugdeal the next day at Gubanov andOrlov’s 11th floor hotel room. Reed and Burgess arrived asplanned, then quickly left, saying they would return in 20minutes with the cocaine. Twominutes later, they forced theirway into the room, brandishinga gun and a can of pepper spray, and stole $500 in cash and acamera from the hotel table.

When Gubanov tried to stopthem, Reed sprayed thetwo victims with the pepperspray, which caused a chokingodor that forced authorities toevacuate the hotel. Gubanov then grabbed awhiskey bottle to defend himselfagainst Burgess, but Reed shothim in the chest. Burgess wasaccidentally shot in the left handduring the scuffle. The pair ran down the hotel’sback stairwell and were longgone by the time police arrived. When police arrived at the hotelabout 10 p.m. Saturday, theyfound Gubanov dead of agunshot wound to the chest, anda distressed Orlov covered inblood.

Security cameras andwitnesses led police to Reed andBurgess, Miami Beach policeDet. Kenny Matthews said. The shooting and suspiciousodor led officials to evacuatethe hotel’s 1,000 guests for hoursas they investigated.

Matthews said both Burgessand Reed have criminal records.Miami Beach police spokesper-son Deborah Doty expressedregret over the interrupted nightsuffered by hotel guests —which included the PrimeMinister of Belize and a100-person wedding party. “We had to make sure thathotel was safe before we letanybody back inside,” she said.

The most played sportthroughout the world is footballwhich for some strange reasonthe Americans choose to callsoccer. I have been playing this gamefrom the time I was a childgrowing up in Dangriga Town,Stann Creek District, Belizealong with national stars like:Anthony “Garrincha” Adderly,Buck Palacio, Nolbert “Nolly”Moss, Pine, Wallet, Naday, RayMoss, Anthony Moss, Nelson

Moss, Henry Moss, Orin“Coco” Orio, Camal, JohnnieCool, Henry Martinez, LepaulMartinez, Pinnacles, Brazilianand many others who grew upin our neighborhood in theLogan Field area. Not only didwe play this sport but we werealso addicted to it to the pointwhere we were called “BallPerrs”. We became good footballplayers without much family andcommunity support, no sponsor-ship, inadequate playingfacilities and no equipments. Inmany parts of Belize and theCaribbean region most of theplayers who played this sport, and those who continue to playit, are experiencing the samething. For Belize and the othercountries to win a World CupTournament, the countries of theCaribbean must have a long termplan in place beginning fromnow. The children in these coun-

tries should be trained from anearly age in all sports. Thegovernments should ensure thatprofessional coaches, equipments, clubs, leagues, sponsorships andfacilities are available its childrento play the sports. Once thesethings are in place, the childrenwill have something to lookforward to because they knowthat if they work hard and excelin the sport of their choicethey will eventually becomeprofessional players. There is an urgent need inBelize to resurrect PrimarySchool, High School, College andInter-district sporting competi-tions. The Ministry of Sports canestablish Directorates for eachsport to go throughout thecountry ensuring that there arerepresentatives in each district forall sporting disciplines. A siteshould be designated as TheNational Sports Training Centerwhere all Belizeans who areselected to play for the nationalteam will live, camp and receivetraining before being sent torepresent Belize as ambassadorsin whatever sport they play. I am of the opinion that thereshould be a National FootballLeague for amateurs that ismanaged by the government anda Professional League managedby private sector businesspersons. When the private sector investsin something, they look forwardto see positive results and ifthey are not satisfied with theresults, they will abandon thebusiness. This seriousness in sports willincrease the competitive spiritamong other team clubs. Once wehave a Professional League theplayers must have a union torepresent their interest. The Government of Belizeshould put laws in place for thesmooth and effective operation ofthe various sporting leagues andassociations There are currently two footballleagues operating in Belize thatseems to be fighting amongthemselves for as long as any ofus can remember. The govern-ment has been standing in themiddle as the referee afraid toblow the whistle to end thisinfighting game. While thisnonsense is taking place, thequality of football in Belize hasbeen constantly deteriorating as

the beat goes on with no hopeof becoming competitive on theworld scene. Most former andcurrent Belizean footballplayers are tired of thisinfighting. They want thisdrama to end now. If the Government of Belizedoes not step in now, footballand many other sportingdisciplines in Belize will remainmediocre for the unforeseeablefuture. I am convinced that theteams Belize selected over theyears did not include the bestBelizean players. It is nosecret that the method ofselection is based on favoritism. About two years ago I wentto the Alliance Stadium inHouston to watch the BelizeNational Team play againstMexico and I was frankly notimpressed by the level of play Isaw. When football was playedin the 1970’s with teams suchas; Chitos Eleven, Berger404, White Label, Charger,Landivar, Police InvadersBellprint etc., the quality offootball was far superior towhat it is today. Furthermore,Inter-district competitions inthose days attracted moreattention and excitement thandoes the games in the currentprofessional league. I now call on the newMinister of Sports Hon JohnSaldivar and former footballplayers in Belize and abroad, toread this article and summon ameeting with all football leaguerepresentatives to embark on anew course to revive football inBelize. It is imperative for the sportto be revived to the point whereour country will becomecompetitive and be looked uponby other countries in the worldas a nation to be reckoned withwhen it comes to competing infootball tournaments. I watched most of the gamesin this current World Cup gamesbeing played in Africa andthroughout these games I keptwondering; what must Belizedo to take up its rightful placein World Cup 2014? I admire the determinationthat the Spanish and Dutchplayers bring to the currentWorld Cup. They must both becommended for playing theirhearts out for their country.Pretty soon this will all cometo an end with Spain taking thetitle for the first time in thehistory of their nation.

Submitted by FlorenceGoldson, WIN BelizeMonday, July 5, 2010: Flatter me, and I may notbelieve you. Criticize me, and Imay not like you. Ignore me,and I may not forgive you.Encourage me, and I will notforget you. Love me and I maybe forced to love you.—William Arthur Ward

We have many highlights inour lives and usually thesehighlights are experience withothers: those we love, those wecannot agree with, those we areindifferent to and those we don’tknow at all. Do we lie to ourselves whenwe say we need no one? Didyou ever stop and think thatsometimes we are the onespeople need the most? So who gives care andsupport anyway? What type ofsupport do we need? Everyone can give care andsupport: families, friends, churches, communities andsupport groups. Care and

support comes in four forms:Emotional, Spiritual, Physicaland Financial. We may not needall four at the same time, but allof us at some point will need oneof the four. Emotional support is thatsupport when we need anotherto listen to us, understand uswithout judgment, hug us, lendtheir shoulder to cry on and bearwith us.

If we are weak or sick whetherfrom illness or age or sadnesswe maybe need that physicalsupport. Financial support is probablyone of the most difficult toreceive. Do I need to say more?Hmm… Spiritual support even thoughpercerived as the most difficultsupport to ask and received, isactually the easiest and the mostimportant to seek and acquire. We need not seek another withspiritual support we can seek

God. It is quite difficult torecognize the Holy Spirit inoneself, but once found theoutcome can be quite remark-able. I can expound further, butthis is just to get you to think… In this time and age so muchis happening. Along with all thegreat and new advances life onearth seems to have taken on, welook around we see a lot of pain, sadness, hurting all around aswell. Some of us choose toignore it, some of us are living itand experiencing it and some ofus are acting on what we see. What are you doing? Do you offer care and supportto others? Do you need care andsupport? Most of the shadows oflife are caused by our standingin our own sunshine—R. WEmerson. Care and supportsomeone today.

The former Panamanian dictatoris convicted of laundering drug-traf-ficking profits. He is also ordered topay $2.88 million in French duty and$1.26 million in damages to Panama. By Kim Willsher, Special to theLos Angeles Times, July 8, 2010la-fg-noriega-verdict-20100708Reporting from Paris — A Paris court on Wednesdayconvicted former Panamaniandictator Manuel Noriega of launder-ing the profits from drug traffickingand ordered him to be imprisoned forseven years. The three-judge panel also orderedhim to pay $2.88 million in Frenchimport duties from his frozen bankaccounts and $1.26 million to thePanamanian government in damages. The 76-year-old former general, who argued to be sent back toPanama, looked shocked as theverdict was translated into Spanish. He was led from the court bygendarmes. Noriega’s lawyers and familymembers said they would consideran appeal. “I don’t know what we’regoing to do. We are going to talk toour father now,” said his youngestdaughter, Thays. At his trial eight days ago,

Noriega, who suffered astroke four years ago andis reportedly partiallyparalyzed, had lookedcomposed and smiled at histhree daughters from thedock. But he appeared nerv-ous Wednesday, licking hislips and nodding grimly athis legal team. The former general wasextradited to France in Aprilafter spending 20 years inU.S. custody, much of it inprison on a drug traffickingconviction. Wednesday’s retrial ver-dict replaces an earlierFrench court decision. In 1999, Noriega wasconvicted in absentia ofstashing millions of dollarsfrom a Colombian cocainecartel in French bankaccounts and luxuryParisian properties in the1980s. He was handed a10-year jail sentence and a$14.1-million fine. Noriega, who waged along battle from hisMiami prison cell tofight extradition to France,

denied the money camefrom drugs, saying it was partof his brother’s inheritance, his wife’s personal fortune andpayments from the CIA. In the Paris retrial, his defenseteam had argued that the formerdictator had the right to betreated as a prisoner of war andshould be sent back to Panamaunder the Geneva Convention, though he could face prison therein connection with charges ofhuman rights abuses. Noriega’s lawyers complainedthat he was being held in squalidconditions in a small cell

without running water, whichthey said did not befit his statusas a prisoner of war and formerhead of state. They also decried the trial aspart of a U.S. conspiracy to keepNoriega behind bars. “This sentence is curious,”said defense attorney OlivierMetzner. “The court is asking aman who has already served 20years in prison to go back toprison.” Once backed by the CIA as acountervailing force to leftistinfluence in Latin America,Noriega fell out with the U.S.government in the late 1980swhen it was reported he hadbecome involved in drugtrafficking and was collaborat-ing with Cuba. In 1989, President GeorgeH.W. Bush sent Americantroops to Panama to capture thegeneral, who sought refuge in theVatican Embassy. During a 10-day standoff, U.S.troops surrounded the buildingand blasted it with heavy metalmusic. Noriega eventuallysurrendered. Willsher is aspecial correspondent.
