The end of the liturgical year approaches. On the last three Sundays of this year A, we hear parables of the judgment from the Gospel according to Matthew, culminating in the great parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25) on the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. These readings are suited to the end of the year, for they lead us to the season of Advent, a season of very intentional waiting for the coming of Christ. ■ FIRST READING: The author sings the praise of wisdom, personified as a woman, or rather, a feminine spirit. Wisdom is everywhere. She is seen by those who love her, found by those who seek her. Even before they realize they want her, she is one her way, and those who keep vigil for her surely find her. Wisdom is precious, yet accessible, to all who seek her.
■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 63 is that prayer of one who thirsts for God, gazing toward God, waiting for God, and keeping vigil through he might by pondering God’s ways.
■ SECOND READING: St. Paul speaks of life and death in a passage that is sometimes read at funerals, and which is the perfect reading for this month of November, which is especially associated with prayer for the dead. Those who believe must not mourn like others, “who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13), for if we have died with Christ in Baptism, then we will surely rise with him. The longer form of the reading goes on to a splendid vision of the end times, when the Lord speaks the word that wakes the dead, and then gathers us together “to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). This vision of reunion in the Lord’s presence is not meant to terrify, but to “console” (1 Thessalonians 4:18).
■ THE GOSPEL: Earlier in the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God by using imagery familiar from the prophets: the vineyard and the harvest, the master and the workers. The parable we hear today uses the image of the wedding. According to Jewish custom, the bridegroom would go to the house of his father-in-law to make the final arrangements before bringing his bride to her new home. There was no knowing exactly how long this would take, so the friends of the groom needed to be ready. In the parable, these negotiations are taking so long that night falls and the foolish virgins are running out of oil. The refusal of the wise to share their oil should not strike us as selfish; rather, this detail should point us to the symbolic meaning of the lamps. They represent something that cannot be shared, the good deeds that shine like a lamp on a lamp stand (see Matthew 5:14). The parable urges readiness, for the time will come when we will be judged on our own merits. Borrowed light will not suffice.
