Francis says “The joy of the Gospel is not just any joy. It consists in knowing one is welcomed and loved by God.” This statement seems reasonable enough; however, his words are rather profound. You see, I think we spend so much time preparing to show our welcome and love of others this time of year that it is good to reflect that the joy of the Gos-pel, and the joy of this season, is the message of God’s welcome and love for us, for me, for you. Perhaps this is as good a definition of salvation as any, knowing that we are wel-comed, loved and redeemed by Jesus. Pope Francis later says provocatively “No one has ever heard of a sad saint with a mournful face. That would be a contradiction. The Christian’s heart is filled with peace because he knows how to place his joy in the Lord even when going through the difficult moment of life.” Good advice for this time of year.

I think with all the stress and anxiety some of us go through this time of year we all feel the need for God’s welcome, love and joy. We all have areas that are spiritually blind, deaf and lame that keep us from joy, especially when faced with the broken relationships in our lives, painful memories that we can’t get rid of, or even a certain measure of paralysis that comes from the stress or grief that can take hold of us this time of year.

The medicine that the Church offers us is the opportunity to rejoice that God is offering us a Savior. This Savior can give us new life. The invitation is to welcome into our hearts the joy of this season. No matter what life throws at us, we rejoice that God has demonstrated his love for us and has welcomed us into his life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
