From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends in Christ:

The VOTES are IN! Thank you to the 33 students from our religious education classes and our parish school for their submissions to our poster contest. As you know we asked a couple of weeks ago for a drawing of Jesus carrying the cross. We said the winner’s artwork would be used for the Lenten banners to be on display in front of our churches for the Sea-son of Lent. The Pastoral Staff and parish staff were asked to vote for their top three choices and once all the votes were made we had a chosen piece of artwork for our Lenten banners. CONGRATULATIONS to Natalia Pepe from the 2nd Grade class at Saint Bridget School for being this year’s winner.

by Natalia Pepe, 2nd Grade by Danielle Chamberlain, 5th Grade by Mihiri Fernando, 10th Grade

It was truly amazing to see the many variations that our very talented and artistic young people made of Jesus carrying the cross. We thank all 33 artists and look forward to future opportunities to involve our young people and their talents in the work of the parish.

FLU SEASON UPDATE…I know that last week when I wrote my article I said that as of that time it was not deemed necessary to suspend distribution of the Precious Blood, however, since writing that article the flu epidemic has become more widespread. Therefore, at this time, I, in consultation with the Archdiocese and with a medical professional, have deter-mined that it would be prudent to suspend the distribution of the Precious Blood until such time that it appears the flu outbreak is over.

Other precautions for you to consider during this time include:

1. If you are ill or suspect you are ill with a contagious illness, to stay home and watch the Mass on television. You can get the local Mass from the Office of Radio and Television on WTXX(Channel 10 or 11 on most providers) and also on EWTN.

2. Perhaps not hold hands with those around you during the Lord’s Prayer.

3. At the Sign of Peace consider a verbal greeting to those around you, or exchange peace with a bow instead of a hand-shake.

LENT IS ONLY A WEEK AND A HALF AWAY! HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT THIS LENT, in

addition to regularly scheduled Masses and activities:

1. Weekly Confessions in Saint Bridget Church on Monday mornings from 7:30-8:30a.m. and on Monday even-ing from 6-7p.m. Please note this is in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Hartford and the Lenten Confession Program.

2. Stations of the Cross…every Friday at Saint Thomas Becket Church at 3:30p.m. and at Saint Bridget Church at 7p.m.

continued….

4. A Lenten Evening of Reflection for ALL parishioners…on the evening of Tuesday, February 27th the Pastoral Staff will lead an evening of reflection. We will begin with a Pasta Dinner at 5:30 pm cooked by our Cheshire Knights of Columbus, which will be followed by presentations and age-appropriate activities for adults and children! There will be an adult presentation, presentation for High School Students, as well as various presentations with activities for chil-dren in various age groupings; middle school aged, grades 2-5, and grades PreK to 1st.

5. The Little Black Books…on Ash Wednesday at the doors of the churches you will find the Little Black Books for your use each day of Lent with a short reflection for your prayer time. Be sure to take one!

6. And don’t forget the Dynamic Catholic’s “Best Lent Ever” daily meditations…the company who puts out the books we have been giving to you at Christmas each year has a way to make your day more reflective and your Lenten jour-ney more fruitful. Sign-up for their daily reflections to be emailed to you at their website www.dynamicatholic.com/bestlentever/.

7. Our Weekly Corporal Works of Mercy…see below…

We as a parish family of Saint Bridget of Sweden Parish will focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy in a special way during the weeks of Lent. It will be an opportunity for us as a family of faith to reach out to others with the mercy and love of God and to fulfill the call of Pope Francis to be instru-ments of mercy in the lives of others.

We have developed a program that will run from the First Sunday of Lent right through Easter. Each week, at both of our church campuses, we will be focusing on a particular Corporal Work of Mercy and we invite you all to participate.

It is our hope that each weekend a basket will be in front of the altar and at the time the collectors are organizing the col-lection, our young people (and any “older” young person who wishes to come forward) will bring the particular item to the basket. These will occur as follows:

Weekend of February 17 & 18—Feed the Hungry non-perishable food items for the Cheshire Community Food Pantry

Weekend of February 24 & 25—Give drink to the Thirsty beverages (water, juice, coffee, etc.) for the Cheshire Community Food Pantry

Weekend of March 3 & 4—Clothe the naked new (WHITE) socks for the Saint Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury or onesies for use

at Carolyn’s Place

Weekend of March 10 & 11—Shelter the Homeless a monetary collection for the Saint Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury

Weekend of March 17 & 18—Visit the Sick children of the parish are asked to make Easter cards to be given to those in skilled nursing facilities

or our homebound parishioners

Weekend of March 24 & 25—Palm Sunday—Visit the imprisoned the chaplains in our prison ministry in the Archdiocese ask that we collect Good News Bibles and Pocket

Dictionaries for use in prison ministry…you can purchase these at any retailer or on Amazon

Weekend of March 31 & April 1—Easter Sunday—Bury the Dead as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, we remember our loved ones who have gone before us in

faith. May they share in His Resurrection!

I look forward to seeing all our parishioners, and in particular our young people, involved in this activity as we reflect on the importance of helping those in need among us.

As always remember to pray for our parish families and ask God’s blessings as we build His kingdom here. Please know that I am praying for you, and I ask for your prayers for me, that together through the intercession of Saint Bridget of Sweden, our Patroness, and united in the Eucharist, we will reflect the presence of Jesus to the world.

SBS Annual Open House & Catholic Schools Week

Once again we had a successful open house last weekend and would like to especially thank Mr. and Mrs. Janezic for helping to coordinate this event. We would also like to thank Mrs. St. Onge and Mrs. Ostuno for their help and to the many families who contributed.

Our annual Open House is always successful because of the parents, faculty, staff and students who volunteer their time for this event. We are so lucky to have such a great community and we look forward to welcoming more families next year!

Our National Catholic Schools Week was also a great success, starting with a family eat out night with proceeds going to a local charity. We also celebrated our students, our country, those in vocation and our faculty and staff here at St. Bridget School. Everyday brought a new reason to celebrate how lucky we are. We look forward to celebrating our faith not only during Catholic Schools week, but every week.

SBS Annual Geography Bee

Congrats to Ray Hackett for win-ning our annual Geography Bee, and Nicholas Ribeiro for coming in second place. We would like to thank Mrs. Thomas for coor-dinating this competition, and to Mr. Thomas for his technical expertise.

Learning about our

Catholic Faith

The Exchange of Peace: we do it at most every Mass, we take a brief time-out from the prayers of Mass to turn to our neighbors and shake hands, hug, kiss, fist bump, flash the V-sign with our fingers—the question is: we’re all doing this, what is it all about?

There is evidence that in the early Church, Catholics would greet each other with a kiss of peace (as is common even today in eastern and Mediterranean cultures). They would do this at the Mass to show solidarity and sympathy of spirit as they went before the Lord. By the Medieval period the exchange had come to only take place between the priest, deacon, and servers at the altar. With the growth of monas-ticism the peace was extended to be passed amongst the congregations of religious. In time, the desire was for this peace to be shared also within the congregated Faithful.

As it now stands, it is not passed one at a time, person to person, but from each individual to all who are around. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal explains that after the “Our Father,” “There follows the Rite of Peace, by which the Church entreats peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express to each other their ecclesial communion and mutual charity before com-municating in the Sacrament” (GIRM 82).

Before entering into Communion with God, and with one another mystically, we first commune with our fellows and are sure of a mutually standing peace before we present ourselves to the Lord.

The way that we share peace changes from place to place as different cultures have their different ways of showing peace, but it remains encouraged by the Church that we keep in mind our unified status as a people, a family, in Christ.

THE MUSIC OF THE TRIDUUM If you like to sing, please consider joining the combined Parish Triduum Choir. Because the Triduum liturgy is outside of the usual weekend Mass schedule, we are able to come together as one parish, regardless of which weekend Mass we usually attend. This is also the perfect oppor-tunity to try out the choir, because the commit-ment is for a limited time period. The rehearsal and liturgy schedule is:

Thursday Rehearsals, beginning February 15, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Music Room of St. Bridget School

Holy Thursday, March 29, 7:00 p.m. – Mass of the Lord’s Supper

6:00 p.m. rehearsal in the choir loft of St. Bridget Church

Good Friday, March 30, 3:00 p.m. – Celebra-tion of the Lord’s Passion

2:00 p.m. rehearsal – Traditional Choir at St. Bridget Church

2:00 p.m. rehearsal – Contemporary Choir at St. Thomas Becket Church

Holy Saturday, March 31, 8:00 p.m. – Easter Vigil

7:00 p.m. rehearsal in the choir loft of St. Bridget Church

I invite you to add your voice to the sung prayer of our parish during this holiest of weeks. To join this exciting, combined Triduum Choir, please contact Julia Atwood, Director of Music, at [email protected]. Our music min-istry is growing, and we are saving a seat for you!

“Ministry of Hope and Healing” Bereavement Support Group

The seminar provides hope, healing and support for partici-pants while they adapt to their loss. The group is guided by trained facilitators as participants journey from grief to healing. It is based on the belief that sharing and talking about one’s thoughts, feelings and experiences in a safe situation with the support of others in similar situations, is one of the most helpful ways to move beyond the pain that is caused by the death of a loved one. Registration is necessary. To register please call: Joan @ 203-271-2372 or Sr. Patricia @203-272-3531 Ext. 1312.

Ask Father

Q. Why is Mary Magdalen thought of as having been a woman of ill-repute?

A. This long-standing mistake is born from the identification of Mary of Magdala with the sinner-woman who washes Jesus’ feet with her tears. However, revisiting those passages in scripture will show that there is no reason to conflate the two into being one and the same woman. Furthermore, there is absolutely no evidence to imply that there were any relations between Je-sus and Mary Magdalen moreso than He had with any other apostle or disciple. She was most certainly not married to Jesus.

In fact, while Mary of Magdala is men-tioned 12 times in the New Testament, the only thing we know of Mary of Magdala before her discipleship to Jesus is that she was tormented by seven demons from which he freed her (Luke 8:2). In the same passage she is named along with several other pious women who were either fe-male followers or financial supporters of Christ’s mission.

Capernaum, where Jesus lived for some time and did a great deal of his ministry, is only about six miles from the town of Mag-dala. It is likely that they became acquaint-ed during this period. Mary Magdalen is mentioned in 12 instances, more than any other woman beside the Blessed Mother in the Gospel.

Why was Mary Magdalen so special? Three of the Gospels put Mary of Magdala at the base of the Cross beside Mary the Mother of God and John the Evangelist (Gospel writer). All four Gospels name her as the first person to be made aware of Jesus’ resurrection. In Jesus’ sending of her to proclaim this to the others, Mary Magdalen is shown as the “apostle to the apostles.”

Mary Magdalen is a great witness to the power of Christ’s resurrection in our lives and of the need to support our whole Christian family, even those who seem to be the pinnacles of strength—the apostles themselves (and our bishops, priests, reli-gious, etc.). Furthermore, she reveals with Jesus’ mother Mary, the vital role of wom-en within the Church and in Christian socie-ty.

St. Mary Magdalen pray for us!
