THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MID-LENT CHECK-IN

God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The Lord, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrec on, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure jus ce for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and

nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fer lize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Column by Fr. Tom Life in Christ – Part 5: Lust – Look at THAT! Last week, we discussed the disordered

affec ons that come from the Capital Sin of Avarice. These disordered affec ons pertain to the unhealthy desire for material goods. This week, we will explore the disordered affec on for another person, which emanates from the Capital Sin of Lust. This disordered affec on manifests itself in ac ons against the Sixth and Ninth Commandments. “You shall not commit adultery” [DT 5:18] and “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” [DT 5:21], respec vely. The proper, ordered affec on for another person expresses itself in love, especially in spousal love. In his Apostolic Exhorta on Familiaris Consor o, Pope St. John Paul II wrote, “Consequently, sexuality, by means of which man and woman give themselves to one another through the acts which are proper and exclusive to spouses, is by no means something purely biological, but concerns the innermost being of the human person as such. It is realized in a truly human way only if it is an integral part of the love by which a man and a woman commit themselves totally to one another un l death.” [FC, 11] Therefore, the difference between Love and Lust is that Love offers a gi of self to another and Lust wishes to take from another. One corollary to this comparison of the gi of Love with the the of Lust is how one considers the other person. Love cares for the en rety of the person, whereas Lust segments or denigrates the person. One example of Lust would see another as merely a body or, worse yet, parts of a body. It is this form of Lust that has launched and sustained the mul -billion dollar industries of pornography and pros tu on. Other criminal ac vi es, such as human trafficking, also get their start in this form of Lust. When we reduce people to what they look like, we have entered into the sin of Lust, and we have stripped their personhood from them.

For example, when we are “admiring” a woman’s curves, are we also considering the fact she might be a very gi ed a orney? Or, when we are enthralled with a man’s abdomen, are we also considering his heart for philanthropy? The sin of Lust keeps us from considering the whole person and only focuses on their physical appeal. We might ask ourselves at this point, “What is the difference between Lust and a rac on?” A rac on leads one to desire to get to know be er the whole person. Lust is the desire to get to know the physical, with li le to no a en on paid to the rest of the person. A rac on is an interest in the person for their own sake. Lust is an interest in the person for our sake. In regards to trea ng another as a person, the philosopher Immanuel Kant says, “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same me as an end [in themselves].” [Immanuel Kant, Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785)] Perhaps, if we want to know if our interests are pure or are purely lus ul, we can ask ourselves, “Am I interested in this person for who they are, or for what they can do for me?” or “Am I more concerned for the other or for myself?” In fact, this sort of Lust can even find its way into married life. Con nuing the earlier quote from Familiaris Consor o, John Paul says, “The total physical self-giving [of spouses] would be a lie if it were not the sign and fruit of a total personal self-giving….” [FC, 11] Lust comes from an unimpeded appe te for pleasure. Next week, we will explore this concept further as we discuss the Capital Sin of Glu ony.

Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

"Work is about more than making a living; it is a form of participation in the creative work of God. People have a right to decent, meaningful work and fair wages. Workers have the right to organize and join unions, own private property, and to economic initiative. Work should promote the dignity of the worker. Our economy exists to serve people, not vice versa. Our faith calls us to demand justice for all workers and a just economy that serves the life and dignity of all. Likewise, our work contributes to the good life of our brothers and sisters." USCCB.org

Many St. Paul of the Cross parishioners have relocated to Florida from other parts of the country and retired here.  Many have thoughts, or even plans, for being buried in their former towns.  Most people do not understand the ins and outs of planning a funeral; especially one that requires special travel logistics. Ever wonder what the Church’s teaching on cremation is? Do you know how to plan a cost-effective funeral? Would you like to learn from the experts? The Parish of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church has arranged to bring together a panel of experts, including funeral directors, a cemetery director, a Knights of Columbus Field Agent, and our own Fr. Tom Lafreniere to answer some common questions about funeral planning. An emcee will ask the panel questions and take questions from the audience. The event will be held Sunday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the St Joseph Hall. Light refreshments will be served before and after the panel discussion. Hosted by the Knights of Columbus Council 12322.

Comfort them in loneliness, sustain them in hardship, give them the courage they need to fulfill their duty and so do Your will in all things. Bestow on our leaders and the leaders

of the world the wisdom and prudence which will bring peace and jus ce to all. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord. Amen. Mary, help of Chris ans, pray for us.

PLEASE NOTE: Please call the Parish Office if you are being admitted to the hospital or know of someone in our parish who requests a visit from a priest or Eucharistic Minister. Names will remain on the prayer list for two months, unless notified.
