    THE WATERS OF BAPTISM

When new sod is put in, it needs constant satura on with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is gra ed onto a tree: the poul ce that joins them at the splice must be kept

wet at all mes. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all mes and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for bap sm, he “knit”

himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Bap st, Christ wove himself into the prophe c tradi on

that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the bap sm of repentance, Jesus iden fied himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is

through the waters of bap sm that Christ con nues to gra new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin

and filled with the promise of grace, given our des ny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of bap sm that inaugurate our mission to

    proclaim the Good News.

Please consider a gi to the Christmas Flower Fund to help defray the cost of the flowers/plants

that are beau fully displayed in our churches during the Christmas season. Simply notate on the memo of your check “Flower Fund”. Checks can be placed in the collec on or mailed to the Parish Office. Thank you.

Please make a note that there will be a special Mar n Luther King Jr. Holiday

Mass on Monday, January 18th at 9:00 AM at St. Patrick. There will no Mass on

January 19th and 20th (Tuesday and Wednesday). In observance of the

Holiday, the Parish Office will be closed on January 18th.
