Page 2 Third Sunday of Easter

Dear Friends in Christ,

We congratulate our First Communicants, 28 children, who received the Lord Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist this weekend. Please pray for them, their families and all that we, like the Apostles (early Church), may ever cherish this relationship with Jesus, at least on every first day of the week - Sunday. Our parish will reserve the first few pews in the church for the First Communion children and their families until Pentecost, as a means of participating in their joy and asking for their prayers.

We are still in the Easter Season, not one but fifty days of celebrating the risen Christ. Thereafter each Sun-day, as a mini Easter, continues the celebration faithful to God’s word, “For as long as you do this you pro-

claim my death until I come.” 1 Cor. 11:26.

In the Gospel message this weekend, St. John, the evangelist, recaps one of the post resurrection appearances where Jesus eats with his followers. He does this in order to reassure them that His resurrection was not a vision of a ghost nor the imagina-tion, as some may erroneously perceive, but a reality. This reality is a profound and inexhaustible revelation of God’s love which calls for a continuous celebration until the Lord comes. Each time we participate in the celebration of this mystery the Lord Jesus eats with us, calm our fears and shares our daily burdens. The resurrection is the most profound life-changing event in human history. It is the greatest sign of God’s love for us. Because of the resurrection the world is a different place where evil, hatred, selfishness, anger and divisions including death have been overpowered. A residue of darkness may re-main, as we notice, but ultimately light has overcome darkness.

The month of May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, our mother. Please join us during the Rosary before weekend masses and remember to pray a daily rosary as well during this month. It will be good to spend some time in our prayer garden with Mary our Mother. Next weekend after the 4:00PM Mass we will crown the statue of Mary in our Memorial Prayer Garden.

This weekend also offers us the opportunity to make our pledge to “Come Follow Me” the 2019 Diocesan Stewardship Appeal in gratitude for all that Jesus has done for us. I am very grateful in anticipation for your generosity. Our parish DSA Chair for this year, Lisa Godzicki, and other members of the Evangelization Committee will be addressing us at all Masses. I pray that each of us individually and as a parish continue to bring the love of Jesus to those in need and teach the faith to young and old alike through your generous gifts to this year’s appeal.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

Bonnie Curry, our Director of Religious Education, will retire at the close of this year’s VBS (June 14). She has served the par-ish of St. Patrick and our children for close to 20 years (as assistant to Anne Chrzan from 1988-2001 and from August of 2012 to today). While Bonnie is retiring, she is not leaving - she will continue as a member of the Music Ministry, Liturgical Ministry, Ladies Guild, Cursillo and other parish ministries. Our thoughts, prayers and congratulatory best wishes are with her and her family. Bonnie - Thank you and may God bless you. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————— With Bonnie’s retirement in June, I am happy to announce that Lisa Johnson has accepted the role of Director of Religious Education effective July 1st. Lisa in addition to her role as our Youth Ministry Coordinator has been working in the RE office as Bonnie’s assistant during the past year. The change in Lisa’s responsibilities created a need to fill the role of Youth Ministry Coordinator. Providentially Casey Buenzli, who has just spent the past 10 months traveling with NET Ministries and helping to run youth retreats around the country will be returning to McHenry in a few weeks. She was offered and has accepted the posi-tion of Youth Ministry Coordinator. Casey will begin her new role here at St. Patrick on June 1st. Please join me in wishing both Lisa and Casey well in their new roles. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————— After all the Masses this weekend, I will begin my 3-month research sabbatical in West, East, South and North African Coun-tries. I will return at the beginning of August.

I want to thank all of you for the tremendous outpouring of support for our Lenten Almsgiving for ImaBridge Africa. As of April 30th we have raised $88,793 including the $50,000 match. The majority of this has come from you the people of St. Patrick. I can’t thank you enough.

Please pray for me as I can assure you of my prayers for you. I will miss all of you and am already looking forward to seeing you in August.

St. Patrick Congratulates Mrs. Pat Wagner on her

Retirement From Montini Catholic School

Mrs. Pat Wagner will be retiring from Montini Catholic School in June. She has been teaching at Montini for over 40 years. St. Patrick thanks her being instrumental in the formation of our children’s lives over these years.

Montini is hosting an open house on Sunday, May 19th from 12:00PM-3:00PM at the Middle School so that you may stop by and thank her for her dedication to teaching our children and to wish her a happy retire-ment.

VBS Registration

The St. Mary/St. Patrick Vacation Bible School is now welcoming all registrations! Forms are located in the back of Church, in the Parish Office and can be printed from the

VBS page of the St. Patrick website.

The theme this year is “Roar! Life is Wild! God is Good!” The dates are June 10 through June 14. We start at 9:00 AM each day and dismissal time is 12:30 PM.

Our vacation Bible School is very “Catholic” in that we ad-just the schedule to include a Reflection time in the Church. During Reflection, we learn about a Saint each day. We also celebrate Mass on Wednesday together! Come and join us for a fun-packed, exciting and whole-some week recognizing God’s love for us!

If you have any questions, please call the Religious Edu-cation Office of St. Patrick Church, 815-385-2959.

Legion of Mary - Rosary Booklet

The Rosary booklet your family received today, was a gift from St. Patrick’s and St Patrick’s Legion of Mary. This tool will assist you in using this very powerful sword…..the Rosary. Praying the rosary just 20 minutes a day will prepare you to: conquer evil, bring you closer to Jesus and Mary, and will bring you peace and holiness. In addition, our Mother Mary has 15 promises for those who pray the rosary. The Legion of Mary urges you to take advantage of these promises, by spending just 20 minutes a day praying the rosary.

Please join us on Saturday mornings at 8am in the parish library to start your day with us by praying the rosary. God Bless – Legion of Mary, St Patrick’s Parish.

SO WHATS NEXT? Call upon Him with trust, receive His Mercy and let it flow to others!

Jesus told St. Faustina;“ When a soul ap-proaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other

souls.” Diary 1074

So how do we “radiate” God’s mercy to others?

The devotional practices revealed through St. Faustina teach us the way of Mercy but it is not enough to hang the Divine Mercy Image in our homes and recite the chaplet. We have to put mercy into action. Start small ---a smile can be an act of mercy! Smile more …..be patient in traf-fic …..say a Hail Mary for someone who you know needs prayer even if they didn’t ask for it. Little things add up!!

Most importantly, remember that the Eucharist is Je-sus, Himself, the Living God. He is filled with love for us and longing to pour Himself out as mercy into our hearts. Receive the Eucharist with an open heart; be ready to receive the many graces He has for you. He will come into your heart and fill it with His tender mercy. Enough to share with family, friends and the whole world!

OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WE WILL EXPLORE WAYS TO LIVE THE MERCY MESSAGE

A single man in his 50s has struggled to find full time work in our area. He works temp jobs, but often these don’t provide full-time hours or a livable wage. As he fell further

behind with his ComEd bill this month, he was sent a shut-off notice. Thanks to your generous donations to St. Vincent de Paul, the past due amount was paid to ComEd to maintain his service. Monetary donations to the poor box allow SVdP to assist the needy in our communi-ty; this month, donations of shaving cream are greatly appreciated. Proverbs 31:20 “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

"As we approach the end of the school year, many of us are beginning to think about the summer. Some of us want to go on vacation, or learn a new hobby, while others are plan-ning on just relaxing a little bit more. The question for you is: what is your spiritual plan for the summer?

A spiritual plan is necessary if we want to be-come the best possible versions of ourselves! We are in a constant state of wanting to be-come the people God created us to be. So this, above all, should be your primary goal this summer: to become a better version of yourself (aka, the Saint God knows you can and should be!).

So, how are we going to make this happen? By simply doing three things this summer:

1. Never miss Sunday Mass 2. Go to Confession once a month 3. And pray daily for at least 20

minutes

If you resolve to undertake this plan in the coming months, you will most definitely wake up in a few months as a new creation in Christ!

COMMUNICATION UPDATE National Fund Set Up for Contributions to

Rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

Bishop Malloy shares with you the following information re-garding those wishing to contribute funds to assist the Ca-thedral of Notre Dame in Paris.

From Bishop David J. Malloy Dear Friends in Christ,

This week we watched with sadness as fire tore through historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, causing severe damage to the centuries-old structure. The impact of the fire on the faithful of the city and of the world is immense and the full extent will not be known for some time.

The parishioners of the Rockford Diocese along with all those across the United States have been generous with prayers, out-reach, and donations in past disaster situations.

In that spirit of generosity parishioners have contacted their pas-tors and the Diocesan Administration inquiring how they can help.

Rather than issuing a formal request for a national appeal, Arch-bishop Paul D. Etienne, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on National Collections, sent information to me and to all bishops regarding donations for the rebuilding of the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Rather than request a national collection for this cause the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has informed me that the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, has set up a fund to help the Cathedral resur-rect and rebuild. The Shrine, whose Board of Members consists of the Administrative Committee of the USCCB, has the infra-structure to manage donated funds and established relationships to provide the necessary and appropriate due diligence on the distribution of funds. All proceeds received will be used solely for the assistance of Notre Dame Cathedral and those affected by this tragedy.

Even though there will be no diocesan-wide collection, those wishing to contribute can do so by sending funds to:

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Checks should be made payable to “Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception;” indicate “Cathedral of Notre Dame Fund” in the memo portion of the check. Funds should not be sent to USCCB or to the Diocese of Rockford. Another way for individual parishioners to support the effort is to visit www.SupportNotreDame.org which is a site solely dedicated to this cause. Thank you in advance for your continued prayers and support of the people of Paris and the Cathedral of Notre Dame which has been a beacon of faith for so many and for so long. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Malloy Bishop of Rockford

Sacraments Baptism of Infants or children

under 7 years of age: To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please con-sider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born. You must be a regis-tered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
