The Patron Saints of World Youth Day 2016 St. Faustina and John Paul II are the patrons
of World Youth Day in Krakow. When in 1938 the 18-year-old Karol Wojtyła arrived in Krakow to begin his studies at Jagiellonian University, 33-year-old Sister Faustina lived in a Krakow Convent. She died on Octo-ber 5, when Karol began his first semester of studies at the Faculty of Polish Studies. They never met, but Divine Providence tied their fates together in a par-ticular way: it was in fact John Paul II who canonized Sr. Faustina and instituted the feast of Divine Mercy in the entire Church.
These two Saints of Krakow – the apostles of Di-vine Mercy – patron WYD in 2016. Their lives are ex-amples for us of deep trust in Divine mercy, expressed in the words: Jesus, I Trust in You.
POPE FRANCIS: General Audience
“The Lord is presented in Sacred Scriptures as “merciful God.” And this is His name, through which He reveals to us, so to speak, His face and His heart. He Himself, as nar-rated in the Book of Exodus, on revealing Himself to Moses describes Himself thus: “The Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (34:6). We find this formula also in other texts, with some variation, but always the stress is put on mercy and on the love of God who never tires of forgiving (cf. Jonah 4:2; Joel 2:13; Psalm 86:15;
103:8; Nehemiah 9:17). Let us look together, one by one, at these words of Sacred Scripture that speak to us of God.
The Lord is “merciful”: this word evokes an attitude of tenderness as that of a mother in dealing with her child. In fact, the Hebrew term used by the Bible makes one think of the insides or even the maternal womb. Therefore, the image it suggests it that of a God that is moved and becomes tender for us as a mother when she takes her child in her arms, desirous only of loving, protecting, and helping, ready to give everything, even herself. This is the image that this term suggests. A love, therefore, that can be described as “visceral” in the good sense.”

Los Santos Patronos de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2016
Santa Sor Faustina y San Juan Pablo II son los patronos de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Craco-via 2016. Cuando en el verano de 1938 Karol Wojtyła, con 18 años vino a Cracovia para estudiar en la Univer-sidad Jagiellonica, sor Faustina, con 33 años, vivía en un convento en Cracovia. Murió allí poco después, el 5 de octubre, justo cuando Karol empezaba el primer cur-so de filología polaca. Aunque nunca se conocieron, la Divina Providencia juntó sus caminos. Juan Pablo II canonizó a sor Faustina y estableció el Domingo de la Misericorida para toda la Iglesia.
Estos dos Santos de Cracovia, los apóstoles de la Divina Misericordia, patrocinan la JMJ Cracovia 2016. Su vida es para nosotros el ejemplo de la profunda confianza en la Misericordia de Dios expresada en palabras: Jesús, en ti confío.

“En las Sagradas Escrituras, se presenta al Señor como ‘Dios misericordioso.’ Este es su nom-bre, a través del cual Él nos rev-ela, por así decir, su rostro y su corazón. Él mismo, como narra el Libro del Éxodo, revelándose a Moisés se autodefinió como: «Señor, Dios compasivo y mis-ericordioso, lento a la ira y rico en clemencia y lealtad» (34, 6). También en otros textos volvemos a encontrar esta fór-mula, con alguna variación, pero siempre la insistencia se coloca en la misericordia y en el amor de Dios que no se cansa nunca de perdonar (cf. Gn 4, 2; Gl 2, 13; Sal 86, 15;
103, 8; 145, 8; Ne 9, 17). Veamos juntos, una por una, es-tas palabras de la Sagrada Escritura que nos hablan de Dios.
El Señor es ‘misericordioso’: esta palabra evoca una actitud de ternura como la de una madre con su hijo. De hecho, el término hebreo usado en la Biblia hace pensar en las vísceras o también en el vientre materno. Por eso, la imagen que sugiere es la de un Dios que se conmueve y se enternece por nosotros como una madre cuando toma en brazos a su niño, deseosa sólo de amar, proteger, ayudar, lista para donar todo, incluso a sí misma. Esa es la imagen que sugiere este término. Un amor, por lo tanto, que se puede definir en sentido bueno ‘visceral’.“
