BROCKTONCOMMUNITY SCHOOLS

WHO WE AREBrockton Community Schools was founded in 1970 to provide community education, enrichment and recreation opportunities to children and adults throughout the city. In the past four decades, it has grown and evolved, serving thousands of children and adults in a wide variety of programs, from basketball leagues to sewing courses, English As A Second Language Instruction, GED preparation, automotive repair, yoga and computer classes. Community Schools also provides highly successful vacation and before- and after-school academic and enrichment programs for Brockton children, providing safe spaces and caring adults 12 months a year.

A division of the Brockton Public Schools, Community Schools is operated and staffed by highly-qualified professionals from the educational, business, sports and arts communities. The office is open throughout the year, and

suggestions for new programs and ideas for how to improve our offerings are always welcome.

Community Schools currently oversees four major programmatic areas: academic support and enrichment programs for students, continuing education and ESL services for adults, and recreation and enrichment programs for the community.

Dear Resident,

For 42 years, Community Schools has provided residents of Brockton and the surrounding towns with educational and enrichment activities throughout the school year and summer. Our programs give children and adults an opportunity to have fun, learn and connect with their friends and neighbors in a relaxed setting. As always, our 2013 summer program opportunities for children are extensive.

Our Smart Start Extended Day program is a wonderful option for working parents: operated from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the George School, Smart Start gives students a camp experience. Certified teachers oversee the program, which has a weekly theme, hands-on project learning, recreation, twice-weekly swimming sessions at the Manning Pool and a special field trip.

For young athletes, we offer a variety of programs that teach skill development and teamwork in tennis, basketball, baseball, baton, soccer, gymnastics, golf and cheerleading. Swimming and diving lessons are also offered through our Summer Aquatics program at Brockton High School and this year we’ve created the Investigating Nature and Digital Adventures camps for middle school students.

For our preschool and younger children, we offer a sports and games program that develops cooperative play; and the Mini Day Fun Camp, which incorporates arts and crafts with movement and play. Elementary and middle school children benefit from academic enrichment camps like Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Summer Reading Adventures camp. Children interested in theater arts can also take advantage of our celebrated Act One Scene I theater camp.

As an arm of the Brockton Public Schools, Community Schools focuses on offering academic enrichment programs, including a Summer School for middle and high school students, an Adult Diploma program, ESL classes and remediation and skill development opportunities for students of all ages.

Our mission is to meet the needs of our community by offering an array of academic, enrichment and athletic opportunities that provide a valuable experience all summer long.

Summerfest 2013A family celebration of the best that Brockton has to offer

A mainstay of the 1970’s and 1980’s, Summerfest was designed as a way for Brocktonians to come together, to have fun with the whole family and celebrate the best of what the community has to offer. In 2011, the event was re-launched in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Brockton High School and Community Schools, and the response was overwhelming.

This year, Summerfest will be held Saturday, August 17th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of Brockton High School. There will be crafts, games and activities for children, food and music, swimming at the Manning Pool and wonderful opportunities to meet your neighbors and relax with friends. School PACs and PTAs will host games and activities; there will be activities with the Fuller Craft Museum, demonstrations by cheerleading and dance groups, and presentations by the Brockton Police and Fire Departments.

The Summerfest Committee is now seeking sponsors for this wonderful family-themed event. All contributions are tax-exempt through the non-profit Brockton Youth Foundation.
