GET REAL! Those of us who flatter ourselves that we have a “realistic” view of the world may listen to the first reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who wouldn’t be attracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us into the Body of Christ. We may occasionally, like Thomas in the Gospel, say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which others will find God’s joy and beauty.

¡BÁJENSE DE LAS NUBES! Los que nos felicitamos por ser “realistas” en este mundo podemos escuchar la primera lectura de hoy y decir, “¡bájense de las nubes!” cuando oímos el relato de Lucas sobre los prime-ros días ideales del movimiento cristiano. Todo parece color de rosa, se obran muchos prodigios, todos comparten sin egoísmo, comen juntos “con alegría” y el Señor aumentaba el número de creyentes. ¿Cómo no sentirse atraído a un grupo semejante? Desde el viento que llenó el cuarto en la planta alta durante Pentecostés así como el Espíritu de Dios sobre las aguas en Génesis, y el fuego que apareció sobre cada discípulo, como la luz que apareció en el albor de la Creación, la intensión de Lucas en Hechos es mostrar una nueva creación, una restaura-ción de la bondad original de la Creación por la obra del Espíritu Santo. Es el Espíritu quien continúa formándonos en el Cuerpo de Cristo. En ciertas ocasiones, así como Tomás en el Evange-lio, decimos ¡bájense de las nubes!” pero la última realidad es que el Espíritu obra continuamente para hacer que nuestras comunidad cristiana sea una nueva creación, una en que los demás encontrarán el gozo y la belleza de Dios.

GOSPEL REFLECTION - REFLEXIÓN EVANGÉLICA
We know that each Sunday we commemorate the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus, but in this period after Easter, Sunday takes on an even more illuminating significance. In the Tradition of the Church, this Sunday, the first after Easter, was called “[Domenica] in albis”. What does this mean? The expression is meant to recall the Rite performed by those who had received Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Each of them would receive a white garment — alba, bianca — to indicate their new dignity as children of God. This is still done today — infants are offered a small symbolic garment, while adults wear a proper one, as we saw at the Easter Vigil. In the past, that white garment was worn for a week, until this Sunday, from which the name in albis deponendis is derived, which means the Sunday on which the white garment is removed. In this way, when the white garment was removed, the neophytes would begin their new life in Christ and in the Church. There is something else. In the Jubilee of the Year 2000, Saint John Paul II established that this Sunday be dedicated to Divine Mercy. Truly, it was a beautiful insight: it was the Holy Spirit who inspired him in this way. Just a few months ago we concluded the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, and this Sunday we are invited to always hold firmly to the grace which comes from God’s mercy. Today’s Gospel is the account of the Apparition of the Risen Christ to the disciples gathered in the Upper Room (cf. Jn 20:19-31). Saint John writes that after greeting his disciples, Jesus says to them: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you”. After saying this, he makes the gesture of breathing on them and adds: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven” (vv. 21-23). This is the meaning of the mercy that is presented on the very day of Jesus’ Resurrection as the forgiveness of sins. The Risen Jesus passed on to his Church, as her first task, his own mission of bringing to all the concrete message of forgiveness. This is the first task: to announce forgiveness. This visible sign of his mercy brings with it peace of heart and joy of the renewed encounter with the Lord. Mercy in the light of Easter enables us to perceive it as a true form of awareness. This is important: mercy is a true form of awareness. We know that it is experienced through many forms. It is experienced through the senses, it is experienced through intui-tion, through reason and even other forms. Well, it can also be experienced in mercy, because mercy opens the door of the mind in order to better under-stand the mystery of God and of our personal exist-ence. Mercy enables us to understand that violence, rancor, vengefulness have no meaning, and the first victim is whoever feels these sentiments, because he deprives himself of his own dignity. Mercy also opens the door of the heart and allows one to express close-ness especially to those who are lonely and marginal-ized, because it makes them feel as brothers and sis-ters, and as children of one Father. It favors recogni-tion of those who need consolation and helps one find the appropriate words so as to give comfort. Brothers and sisters, mercy warms the heart and makes it sensitive to the needs of brothers and sisters with sharing and participation. Thus, mercy requires everyone to be instruments of justice, reconciliation and peace. Let us never forget that mercy is the keystone in the life of faith, and the concrete form by which we make Jesus’ Resurrection visible. May Mary, Mother of Mercy, help us to believe and joyfully experience all this.

Cada domingo, hacemos memoria de la resurrec-ción del Señor Jesús, pero en este periodo después de Pascua, el domingo reviste un significado más ilu-minador. En la tradición de la Iglesia, este domingo después de la Pascua, se le denomina “in albis”. ¿Qué significa esto? La expresión pretendía recordar el rito que cumplían aquellos que habían recibido el bautismo en la Vigilia pascual. A cada uno de ellos se le entregaba un hábito blanco —“alba”, “blanca”— para indicar su nueva dignidad de hijos de Dios. Hoy todavía se sigue haciendo esto: a los neonatos se les coloca una pequeña tela simbólica, mientras que los adultos se ponen uno auténtico y verdadero, como lo hemos visto en la Vigilia pascual. Esta ropa blanca, en pasado, se llevaba puesta durante una semana, hasta este domingo, y de ahí deriva el nombre in albis deponendis, que significa el domingo en el cuál se quita el hábito blanco. Y así, quitada la ropa blanca, los neófitos comenzaban su nueva vida en Cristo y en la Iglesia. Hay otra cosa. En el Jubileo del año 2000, san Juan Pablo II estableció que este domingo estaría dedicado a la Divina Misericordia. Es verdad, fue una bonita intuición: el Espíritu Santo le inspiró. Hemos concluido el Jubileo extraordinario de la Misericordia hace pocos meses y este domingo nos invita a reto-mar con fuerza la gracia que viene de la misericordia de Dios. El Evangelio de hoy es la narración de la aparición de Cristo resucitado a los discípulos reuni-dos en el cenáculo (cf. Juan 20, 19-31). Escribe san Juan que Jesús, después de haber saludado a sus discípulos, les dijo: «Como el Padre me envió, tam-bién yo os envío». Dicho esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: «Recibid el Espíritu Santo. A quienes perdonéis los pecados, les quedarán perdonados» (vv. 21-23). He aquí el sentido de la misericordia que se presenta precisamente en el día de la resurrección de Jesús como perdón de los pecados. Jesús resucitado, ha transmitido a su Iglesia, como primera misión, su propia misión de llevar a todos el anuncio concreto del perdón. Este es el primer deber: anunciar el perdón. Este signo visible de su misericordia lleva consigo la paz del corazón y la alegría del encuentro renovado con el Señor. La misericordia a la luz de la Pascua se deja perci-bir como una verdadera forma de conocimiento. Y esto es importante: la misericordia es una verdadera forma de conocimiento. Sabemos que se conoce a través de muchas formas. Se conoce a través de los sentidos, se conoce a través de la intuición, a través de la razón y aún de otras formas. Bien, se puede co-nocer también a través de la experiencia de la miseri-cordia, porque la misericordia abre la puerta de la mente para comprender mejor el misterio de Dios y de nuestra existencia personal. La misericordia nos hace comprender que la violencia, el rencor, la ven-ganza no tienen ningún sentido y la primera víctima es quien vive de estos sentimientos, porque se priva de su propia dignidad. La misericordia también abre la puerta del corazón y permite expresar la cercanía sobre todo hacia aquellos que están solos y margina-dos, porque les hace sentirse hermanos e hijos de un solo Padre. Favorece el reconocimiento de cuantos tienen necesidad de consuelo y hace encontrar palabras adecuadas para dar consuelo. Hermanos y hermanas, la misericordia calienta el corazón y le hace sensible a las necesidades de los hermanos, a través del compartir y de la participa-ción. La misericordia, en definitiva, compromete a todos a ser instrumentos de justicia, de reconciliación y de paz. No olvidemos nunca que la misericordia es la llave en la vida de fe, y la forma concreta con la cual damos visibilidad a la resurrección de Jesús.

San José María Vianney decía, “Si estamos privados de la Comunión, debemos reemplazarla, lo más posible, con la comunión espiritual, la cual podremos efectuar en todo momento, y debemos de siempre sentir el deseo ardiente de recibir a Nuestro Señor.” El también decía, “La Comunión es para nuestra alma como soplar a un fuego que comienza a apagarse, pero que aun cuenta con brazas calientes, les soplamos, y vuelve el fuego.“ “Cuando no recibes la Comunión y no asistes a Misa, puedes hacer una comunión espiritual que resulta ser una práctica con muchos beneficios,” escribió Santa Teresa de Jesús, “el Señor admirará esto.”
Oración para el Acto de la Comunión Espiritual: Jesús mío, Yo creo que Tu estás presente en el Sagrado Sacramento. Te amo sobre todas las cosas, y deseo recibirte en mi alma. Como no puedo recibirte en este momento Sacramentalmente, al menos llega espiritualmente a mi corazón. Te acojo como si estuvieses ya ahí y me uno a Ti. No permitas que me separe de Ti. Amén.

St. Jean-Marie Vianney said, “If we are deprived of Sac-ramental Communion, let us replace it, as far as we can, by spiritual communion, which we can make every mo-ment; for we ought to have always a burning desire to receive the good God.” He continued, “Communion is to the soul like blowing a fire that is beginning to go out, but that has still plenty of hot embers; we blow, and the fire burns again.” “When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice,” wrote St. Teresa of Jesus, “by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.”
Act of Spiritual Communion Prayer:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite my-self wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

… In addition to Saint Faustina’s visions of Christ’s Divine Mercy, the saint was also granted visions of Heaven. She also saw the souls in the Purgatory and saw Our Lady tending to them. Jesus complained to Saint Faustina in these words, "Distrust on the part of souls is tearing at My insides. The distrust of a chosen soul causes Me even greater pain; despite My inexhaustible love for them they do not trust Me. Even My death is not enough for them. The Resurrection of Jesus was the most important event in the history of the world. When the Lord appeared to the apostles pointing out His wounds, it was to demonstrate He was the Crucified Christ, and to show He had resurrected from the dead. The final proof that He was God. He then bestowed on the apostles the power to forgive sins, which was in effect Divine Mercy coming into the world. In 1931 He appeared as the same image in another room, this time the room of a young nun, again showing His wounds, emphasizing the power of those wounds as rays from a font of reconciliation and renewal, rays of love and mercy. This was Divine Mercy, His victory on the Cross, His resurrection, coming into to a very sinful world once again. A world that was about to plunge man into the depths of depravity in a horrific world war. He asked her to teach the world again of why He died on the Cross to give sinners another chance of obtaining God's Divine Mercy, and pardon their sins if they returned to living by God’s commandments. He was also reminding man that His death on the Cross, Divine Mercy was for all mankind. The image that appeared to the apostles was the resur-rected Christ. The Resurrection was the start of the Chris-tian Church. The image that appeared to Saint Faustina was the same image that started the Christian Church. His appearance to Saint Faustina as the same image was to renew the Church, to renew belief in the Cross, in the Resurrection, in mans salvation. He appeared again on earth to Saint Faustina, to save sinners from eternal damnation. His message of Divine Mercy is a warning to mankind to exercise their conscience, come back to God and trust Him.
La Resurrección de Jesús fue el evento más importante en la historia del mundo. Cuando nuestro Señor se apare-ce a los apóstoles señalando Sus heridas, era para compro-bar que Él era el Cristo Crucificado, y mostrarles que El había resucitado de entre los muertos. La prueba última de que El era Dios. Les otorgó el poder de perdonar los pecados, que fue en efecto la Divina Misericordia viniendo al mundo. En 1931 El también se aparece con la misma imagen, en esta ocasión en la celda de una joven monja, de nuevo mostrando Sus heridas, y haciendo énfasis en el poder de esas heridas como rayos de una fuente de renovación y renovación, rayos de amor y misericordia. Esta era la Divina Misericordia, Su victoria en la Cruz, Su resurrección, viniendo de nuevo a un mundo pecador de nuevo. Un mundo que estaba apunto de sumergir al hombre en la profunda depravación del horror de la guerra mundial. El le pide que enseñe al mundo de nuevo el por qué El murió en la Cruz para otorgar a los pecadores una nueva oportunidad para obtener la Misericordia Divina de Dios, y el perdón de los pecados viviendo los mandamientos de Dios. El también deseaba recordar al hombre que Su muerte en la Cruz, la Misericordia Divina era para toda la humanidad. La imagen que aparece a los apóstoles era el Cristo resucitado. La Resurrección fue el comienzo de la Iglesia Cristiana. La imagen que aparece a Santa Faustina fue esa misma imagen que dio inicio a la Iglesia Cristiana. La imagen que se hace presente a Santa Faustina fue la misma imagen y fue para renovar la Iglesia, para renovar la creencia en la Cruz, en la Resurrección, en la salvación del hombre. Se la aparece a Santa Faustina en la tierra, para salvar a los pecadores de la eterna condenación. Su mensaje de la Divina Misericordia es una advertencia a la humanidad para ejercitar sus conciencias, regresar a Dios y confiar en El.
