Learning and Living Our Catholic Faith

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On August 28, we celebrated the Memorial of St Augustine (354-430 A.D.). He wrote one of the first autobiographies in all of history, called his "Confessions." His story is an incredibly simple yet profound reflection on what God's grace can do in a person's life - how God can transform one from great sin to great sanctity. The following is an encouraging and hope-giving excerpt from his "Confessions", and offers deep insight into God's plan for you and me and the whole world, and it's a message that from time to time we need reminding of. I pray you find it inspiring! - Fr Jeremy OMV

"Urged to reflect upon myself, I entered under your guidance into the inmost depth of my soul. I was able to do so because you were my helper. On entering into myself I saw, as it were with the eye of the soul, what was beyond the eye of the soul, beyond my spirit: your immutable light. It was not the ordinary light perceptible to all flesh, nor was it merely something of greater magnitude but still essentially akin, shining more clearly and diffusing itself everywhere by its intensity. No, it was something entirely distinct, something altogether different from all these things; and it did not rest above my mind as oil on the surface of water, nor was it above me as heaven is above the earth. This light was above me because it had made me; I was below it because I was created by it. He who has come to know the truth knows this light.

O Eternal truth, true love and beloved eternity. You are my God. To you do I sigh day and night. When I first came to know you, you drew me to yourself so that I might see that there were things for me to see, but that I myself was not yet ready to see them. Meanwhile you overcame the weakness of my vision, sending forth most strongly the beams of your light, and I trembled at once with love and dread. I learned that I was in a region unlike yours and far distant from you, and I thought I heard your voice from on high: “I am the food of grown men; grow then, and you will feed on me. Nor will you change me into yourself like bodily food, but you will be changed into me.”

I sought a way to gain the strength which I needed to enjoy you. But I did not find it until I embraced the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who is above all, God blessed for ever. He was calling me and saying: I am the way of truth, I am the life. He was offering the food which I lacked the strength to take, the food he had mingled with our flesh. For the Word became flesh, that your wisdom, by which you created all things, might provide milk for us children.

Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace."

THE TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Focus: Jesus, who is the fulfillment of God’s laws and prophets, tells us how

to live out God’s commandments.

Today, we think about the best way to live out God’s commandments, passed on to us through Moses, by witnessing God’s blessings and presence in our midst. We can go beyond our human traditions and rituals by washing our hearts and getting rid of evil thoughts and desires. We practice it by caring for all who are vulnerable and in need.

In the first reading, Moses calls on God’s people to witness God’s blessings and presence in their midst by keeping his laws and commandments. In the second reading, James asks God’s people to follow the Word of God and not the ways of the world. In the Gospel, Jesus warns the Pharisees, scribes and the crowd not to simply observe human tradition and rituals. Rather, they need to look into their hearts and clean out evil thoughts.

PART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITHSECTION ONE - "I BELIEVE" - "WE BELIEVE"

God Comes To Meet Man – The Transmission of Divine Revelation – “The Apostolic Tradition”

78. This living transmission, accomplished in the Holy Spirit, is called Tradition, since it is distinct from Sacred Scripture, though closely connected to it. Through Tradition, "the Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes."37 "The sayings of the holy Fathers are a witness to the life-giving presence of this Tradition, showing how its riches are poured out in the practice and life of the Church, in her belief and her prayer."38 . . . continued in apostolic succession

FORMED PICK OF THE WEEKConvinced – Why Would Anyone Become Catholic? Why would intelligent, successful people give up careers, alienate friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? As he was considering his own move into the Church, Donald Johnson traveled around the country to get answers from some of today’s most prolific Catholic converts.

“As a cradle Catholic, I deeply appreciate hearing the stories and learning the many ways the Lord draws people from all walks of life to the fullness of faith in the Church that He founded! My own faith has been strengthened through these heartfelt and articulate accounts.

Thank you!” —Alison M. Our Lady of the Mount, NJWatch this and more at FORMED.ORG

THE R.C.I.A. JOURNEY OF FAITHIf you’ve been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic or maybe you are Catholic but have never received all of your sacraments of initiation, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Come meet some faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider it a privilege to get to know you. Our parish will soon begin a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment. These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church.

Sessions are always held on Thursdays at 7pm. The first session this year is Sept 13 in the church basement. Feel free to come with or without registration -- registration just helps us to prepare the room and handouts, so it is nice, but not required. Register by sending us an email or filling out the info below, clip and place in the collection basket or drop it at the parish office during the week. Please give us a call if you have further questions or would like further information at 465-4284, or email us at [email protected]. Or check out our website: stmarysalton.com (RCIA can be found under the Sacraments tab).

Spiritual MasterIn this collection of retreat talks, the beloved Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, O.P., gives us a blueprint for progress in the spiritual life. He particularly focuses on:• The goal of life as supernatural

life and love• The obstacles in life brought

about by evil and sin• The Lord's redemptive work as

the source of the spiritual life• The power of mortification and

acceptance of our crosses• Conformity to Christ by prayer

and devotion to MaryFr. Garrigou-Lagrange was a brilliant scholar who wrote over 50 books and 300 articles. He served as theological advisor to four popes, including Saint John XXIII, and also oversaw the doctoral work on Karol Wojytla, the future Saint John Paul II."I urge you to read this book—and learn from a true master of the spiritual life. It is the most mature and accessible work of one of the greatest spiritual theologians of all time. His teaching formed saints, including John Paul II, who went to Rome to do his doctoral studies under this brilliant and beloved teacher." - Dr. Scott Hahn

PLEASE HELP TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF SALVATION

Assisting people in the instruction of the Faith is a great spiritual work of mercy. We may not all be called to be a catechist standing up in front of a class, but all Christians by virtue of their baptism are called to “make disciples of all men.” One way you can assist in this call to evangelization is to help provide the materials necessary to instruct those who are inquiring into the life of the Church. Each year we provide free Bibles and catechism material to the Inquirers in our RCIA program. Please consider doing your part in “making disciples of all men.” (Matthew 28:19) Checks can be made to St. Mary’s; please note “RCIA” on the check or envelope. They can be dropped at the parish office or in the collection basket. No amount is too small. May God bless you for your continued generosity!

Dear Lovers of the Cross and St Mary's,Thanks to YOU, we have exceeded our "Lift High the Cross" $50,000. fundraising goal! May God be praised! We have already paid the $20,000. for our new air handling system and are finalizing plans for the bathroom and porch renovations, and most importantly the new Cross is being built by Alton Sheet Metal for installation in the near future. May God bless you all for your love and generosity toward St Mary's Parish and Church! - Fr Jeremy OMV
