Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 27 de Septiembre 2020

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last Tuesday, Fr. Joseph marked his 35th ordination anniversary. Give thanks to God for this holy priest. He has no idea of how important he is to us and the Church. Gratitude for his priesthood also leads me to rejoice for the newest priest in the parish – Fr. Fernando. He is doing wonderful work. One of the reasons I am praying for St. Michael to end the pandemic is so that everyone will be able to get to know Fr. Fernando. Please keep praying the Novena from last week’s bulletin until the 29th. Next month, the seminarian, Stephen Restrepo will be ordained a transitional dea-con on the way to priesthood in the Spring. How can we not be grateful that this man is joyfully offering his life to serve the peo-ple of God? And how can I neglect to mention Fr. Charles. He is really developing and adding to the life of the parish. The witness and dedication of these men inspires me to be a better pastor, priest, Catholic and man. Give thanks to God for them. May our Lady and patron protect them and guide them in life and holiness. – Fr. Michael BLESSING OF ANIMALS 2020 Next Sunday is October 4th – the Feast of St. Francis. It has been our custom when the 4th falls on a Sunday to offer a Blessing of Animals. In previous years, we have held one ceremony outside between the Masses We don’t think it is a good idea to add anoth-er ceremony this year but we don’t want to forget blessing the animals. We think with social distancing providing more space in the pews that it is possible to bring the animals to either the 9:00am Mass or the 6:00pm Mass for the blessing. You have to make sure they are leashed or in a carry box. You have to make sure they are well behaved or we ask that you take them outside. The ushers at the Mass are prepared to assist with keeping order. So you are welcome to bring your pet dogs and cats and parakeets and alligators (remember to leash them) to the ceremony. St. Francis of Assisi pray for us. YOUNG PEOPLE, AFTER SCHOOL CHILDREN The priests have started making plans for catechesis and youth formation. We were hoping that the children and teenagers in Cat-echesis and the After School Program would have returned to school but that has not happened in Waltham with the exception of Our Lady's Academy. So we are looking at how to bring them together while using the outside grounds for the Fall months. We will be presenting some ideas in the next week. We are starting a Frassati Club for eighth graders and high school students. This club, named after Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, will combine outdoor activities with catechesis and prayer. We will meet on Oct. 3, Oct. 12 and Oct. 31st. More information about this will come next week when we have confirmed our plans. SAFETY PROCEDURES/COLDER WEATHER It is time to start wearing warmer clothes into church even if we have pleasant fall weather. Sometimes the old brick church is colder inside than it is outside. We will try to keep the windows open for ventilation purposes as long as possible. Please remem-ber not to come to church when you are sick or think you are get-ting sick. Also, please remember to follow the protocol of wear-ing masks when you are in church – not only for your own physi-cal health but for the health of everyone else in the Church.

WE HAVE A NEW ONLINE GIVING SYSTEM Recently we updated our online giving system to one that is more flexible than what we had previously. Please visit the parish web-site, click DONATE on the menu and see how easy it is to make your donation! GRAND ANNUAL APPEAL Next week, we will be sending out a letter to parishioners and friends asking everyone to contribute to our first Grand Annual Appeal. Most parishes have the practice of asking parishioners to make a generous sacrificial donation to the parish once a year. This Appeal will take the place of the Semi-Annual Appeal which was taken up as a second collection during October in past years. Why are we having this collection? The reasons for instituting the Grand Annual are 1) We are not able to take second collec-tions at this time. 2) Our attendance numbers are steady at around 800 worshippers on a weekend, but many of us are not able to attend Mass as regularly as before. So the groups of worshippers are different from week to week. 3) To make up our expected offertory shortfall. We are doing well with the offertory but cur-rent giving still projects a shortfall at the end of the fiscal year. 4) We are entering the more expensive, colder months of heating and snow removal. 2020 has reminded us to be hopeful but pre-pare for the worst. 5) In case of another closure of public Masses in the coming months, we want to insure that we will continue to navigate through any economic storms. How do I donate to Grand Annual Appeal? We highly encour-age everyone to donate through the new online giving system available at our parish website. You can give a onetime gift or pledge a larger amount that can be withdrawn monthly. For those who use offertory envelopes, please note that we were unable to change October’s Semi-Annual envelope, so feel free to use that envelope for the GRAND ANNUAL. For those who do not use offertory envelopes or would rather not use online giving, please mail in your donation to the parish office or drop your own enve-lope into the baskets at any Mass. We are grateful for all dona-tions, no matter what method you use! How much should I donate? Some people have asked about how much to donate. Fellow pas-tors have told me that their parishioners appreciate being asked to make specific amounts. For example, he asks every family in his parish to contribute $500. I am not sure, with the diversity of our parish, whether that is helpful to most people. So I ask everyone to participate and be as generous as possible. The small Christian communities of the parish (UCCB) organized and collected $11,000 a few months ago. A parishioner who knew that we were starting this collection donated $10,000 to it; another parishioner donated $1,000. So we ask everyone to make a sacrifice and be as generous as your situation allows. Remember that through online giving you can make a pledge and have it be paid as a recurring donation. Thanks to these parishioners for getting us off to a great start! Also, please know that anyone who donates $500 or more will receive a 133 Club number for one year for as long as there are available numbers. The number can be for you or used as a gift for someone. Each month, $2,000 in winnings is distributed to members whose numbers are drawn in the 133 Club.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BIBLE We continue to include the answers to some of the most common-ly asked questions about the Bible. The information is based on Responses to 101 Questions on the Bible by Fr. Raymond Brown. Q: What is the message of the Apocalypse or the Book of Rev-elation? “Apocalypse” and “Revelation” mean unveiling. Thus there is implied a knowledge of what hitherto was covered over or hid-den. The basic message of the Apocalypse is one of hope in a time of persecution. Using symbolic language, such as that of great beasts, floods, etc., the author describes his time as one of severe affliction and suffering produced by evil. Amidst this, he wishes to reassure the readers that God has control of all things, whence his imagery of a heavenly book in which all things are written down, or of a period of time in which the various activities that happen have a set limit, or of angels that can overcome the forces of evil, or even of good beasts that can overcome the bad beasts. He is saying to the persecuted and suffering group that they are not to despair, for God will bring all this to an end and be

victorious. He will save those who have remained faithful and destroy the forces of evil. When will this happen? Soon. The “soon” is from God’s standpoint and is to be met by our firm con-viction that God does not allow His people to be trampled on and destroyed indefinitely. There is also a more profound message. There is a conviction that what happens on earth so visibly by way of wars, persecutions, and catastrophes is but a pale and insignificant part of total reali-ty. Far more important is what goes on in heaven, in terms both of the praise of God by myriads of angels and saints, and of God’s victory over supernatural forces of evil (for instance, Michael over Satan. An apocalyptic writer often sees the heavenly at the same time as the earthly, and brings to the readers a sense of a wider reality beyond that of the cosmic. The magnificent liturgies in heaven are part of reality if we have the eyes of faith to per-ceive them. And so there is an obligation on earth to participate in the heavenly and not to set our total concern on what we can see and touch with our senses. The mystical, the otherworldly, the celestial are all part of the gift of apocalyptic to the broader pic-ture of Christian faith and understanding.

P. Fernando J. Vivas

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build

strong support systems for all of us. In addition to

their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish

social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first

responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in

response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide

comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.

Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to

keeping our priests healthy.

This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission

by giving to the special collection at Masses on

September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is

a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just

observe need in our communities; they seek it out so

they can respond.
