God’s Faithfulness
The witness of Scripture is unanimous that the solicitude of divine providence is concrete and immediate; God cares for all, from the least things to the great events of the world and its history. The sacred books powerfully affirm God’s absolute sovereignty over the course of events: “Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.” And so it is with Christ, “who opens and no one shall shut, who shuts and no one opens.” As the book of Proverbs states: “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will be established” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #303).
Elijah, one of the great prophets of the Old Testament, listens to the word of the Lord. He listens and acts. God will work mightily through this prophet to bring correction to the wicked king Ahab who has turned away from true worship. This is bad for the entire nation of Israel, causing desecration of the holy places. The word of the Lord comes to Elijah, and when this word comes, as it does in I Kings 17:1-5, Elijah is given step-by-step instructions: he is told to go and hide by the brook Cherith near the Jordan River, where he will be fed by ravens. As the brook dries up, Elijah is instructed to go to Zarephath. There, he will encounter the widow whom God has chosen to sustain Elijah.
Perhaps we are moved with pity for the poor widow of Zarephath, who, with her son, is prepared to die of hunger. She is resigned to the apparent present reality: there is no food, no rain in the land. Elijah asks her for a little bit of bread: "Please bring along a bit of bread." The widow acknowledges she does not even have enough to cook a meal. Elijah then clarifies the request: be not afraid. Trust, act with faith. The widow trusts Elijah and God's provision. In this encounter, the divine will of God is revealed as good, provident and a truly human experience. The widow, her son, and Elijah are sustained throughout the famine. In this moment, faith comes alive in the encounter between Elijah and the widow. Indeed, her faith in God's word goes beyond simply believing to action.
Elijah is one of the bridges of the Old Covenant to the New. He is there at the Transfiguration along with Moses on Mount Tabor. Ancient among the prophets, he becomes a powerful figure in how the Lord of the Covenant, Almighty God, fulfills his good and perfect will through very ordinary human beings. A starving widow and her son; a widow who should have been cared for by the scribes and Pharisees and was not, yet still gave her last two coins in faith to God in the temple in Mark 12.
Are we willing to trust God's will, that it is a good and perfect will? Do we believe that he works all things out to the good of those who love Him? Or do we become paralyzed by our fear and unbelief? Often the most helpless among us become the greatest examples and inspirations to our faith. Let us look with amazement at the examples of the faithful widows in Sacred Scripture, who become icons of God's fidelity to His covenant love. Fr. Tim

To help a family in need this Christmas, here’s what to do:
1. Pick up a “straw” from the crèche in narthex after Mass.
2. Buy the item listed on the straw. Each straw specifies the kind of gift to purchase. For example, “Family A—FEMALE, AGE 8, DRESS, SIZE 7-8 CHILD.” We ask that you not spend more than $25.
3. Bring the wrapped gift back to Bishops Hall by Sunday, Dec. 9, or to the Cathedral office M-F, 8:30am- 5:00pm. Attach the straw to the wrapped gift.
