From Father Mike Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share with you that Archbishop Lori has appointed Fa-ther Roque Lim as Catholic chaplain of Upper Chesa-

peake Medical Center. This appoint-ment became effective on July 1.

Since it was opened in the year 2000, Upper Chesapeake has grown in size and has become a very busy hospital. Saint Margaret Parish had been respon-sible for the spiritual care of all Catholic patients until December 2010. By that time, it became clear to me and to the other pastors of nearby parishes that we needed, if possible, to devote the full-time service of a priest to the spiritual care of the patients at the hospital. Ac-cordingly, the Archbishop then assigned Father Gregory Ferri as the temporary Catholic chaplain. Father Ferri has been reassigned to Saint Mary Parish in Hager-stown effective July 1, and Father Roque Lim became permanent Catholic chap-lain of the hospital as of that same date.

Father Lim was born in the Phil-ippines. His parents and family im-migrated to the United States in 1974 when Father was only nine years old. Father is one of four children and has three sisters. They made their home in Baltimore where some of his mother’s family had already settled. Father Lim grew up in Saint Joseph Monastery Parish in the Irvington community of west Baltimore. His father died in 1997, and his mother and sisters still live in the Baltimore area. After at-tending the Polytechnic High School, Father went to the University of Maryland where he received a Bach-elor’s Degree in medical technology.

He then earned a Masters Degree in molecular biology from Maryland and worked over 14 years in several posi-tions – at the Shock Trauma Center at University Hospital, at Harbor Hospi-tal, and at Quest Diagnostics. Father became a candidate for the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1999. He attended Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg and was ordained in 2006. Since then, Father Lim has served as an Associate Pastor at Saint Joseph Parish in Cock-eysville (2006 to 2009) and then at Saint Joseph Parish in Fullerton (2009 until now). Father Lims‘ residence is now here at Saint Margaret.

In his chaplaincy ministry, Father will visit all Catholic patients daily (and other patients who request), be avail-able for personal and spiritual guid-ance, and offer the sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing. Pres-ently, parishioners from Saint Margaret take Holy Communion each day to all Catholic patients at the hospital and this practice will continue. Father will, of course, respond to emergency calls at the hospital, and, as possible, assist with re-sponding to those in need at other loca-tions as well.

Finally, the 11 parishes of our Harford Region have worked cooperatively in planning over recent years. In that spirit, with Father Lim’s assignment here, either Father Lim or our Associate Pastor Father John Cunningham will take turns in assisting regularly with Masses at Saint Francis de Sales and perhaps also at an-other parish in the county. Father Lim will also have a regular turn at Masses here at Saint Margaret. Please join me in welcoming Father to Saint Margaret, to Harford County and to his ministry at Upper Chesapeake. Father Mike

Marriage Moments “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Cor. 12:10Sometimes spouses can be a thorn in each other’s side. Annoying as this can be, it can also be a path to self-correction and humility.

Liturgy CornerHey, you guuuuuuuys!Remember that opening from the PBS TV show ‘The Electric Company’? When the kids heard that, they all knew it was time to sit up and focus on what was coming.

The same might be said of the Preface, from the Dialogue through the Sanctus. There’s been a whirlwind of activity in the Liturgy thus far, but now it’s time to quiet ourselves and turn our attention to THE high point of our Liturgy – the Eucharistic Prayer.

The Preface Dialogue begins with “The Lord be with you.” We are encouraged to “lift up our hearts” and focus on heavenly things. We may physically be in a pew, but our spirits, our entire beings, are encour-aged to seek heaven where all the angels and saints praise God. We conclude with “It is right and just.” It is right that we praise God – we are His creation. It is just - God is deserving of all praise.

Continuing, the Priest echoes that same sentiment as he proclaims the reason for praising God at this liturgy. The text changes depending on the liturgical sea-son or feast but, ultimately, the entire bib-lical story is recalled for us as we praise God for creation and salvation.

Finally, with the Sanctus, we join the throngs of angels as we praise God with “Holy, holy, holy” just as they did in the an-cient church. This Trishagion “three times holy” is the Hebrew superlative that unites our voices with those of heaven as well as the Church throughout the ages. To-gether, with our hearts lifted to heaven, we come into the awesome presence of God.

Training for Eucharistic MinistersTraining sessions will be held for persons who are interested in becoming Extraordi-nary Ministers of Holy Communion at our parish. Attend training either July 23 or July 24, 6:30 - 7:30 pm in the church. Please call Mary Ann Silvestri, 410-838-6261 or [email protected] to sign up or if you have any questions.

The Basilica Needs Volunteers!Do you like history? Are you interested in Catholic history? Do you enjoy talking to people? Become a docent for the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a volunteer for the Basilica, you will learn all about the history of America’s first cathe-dral, including facts about the lives of Arch-bishop John Carroll, Maryland’s first bishop, James Cardinal Gibbons, and the great archi-tect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who designed the Basilica culminating in what many believe as his greatest masterpiece. You will gain knowledge of the many important histori-cal events that took place in the cathedral as well as the many dignitaries, historical figures and saints that have visited. You will work alongside our already knowledgeable and dedicated team of docents to give tours and answer questions from our many visitors. The time commitment could be as much as once a week or as little as once a month, working a four hour shift in the morning or afternoon. If you are interested in learning more about this exciting and fun volunteer opportunity, please contact Kathy Wandishin at [email protected] or 410-727-3565, ext. 68.
