  • NEW VISION

Jesus proclaimed that he came into the world to make the sightless see and the seeing blind. A difficult saying! But surely it must mean that Jesus intended to take our ordinary ways of looking at things and turn them inside out. Jesus came to change our perspective. When the prophet Samuel went out to select the new king, he chose a young man who had the look of royalty about him. But God told him not to judge by appearances. God told Samuel—and today tells us—to change our perspective and to look at things and people differently. We are like the Ephesians, whom Paul urged to live as children of the light. With the light of faith, we have a new way of looking at things, and we are called to bring that new vision to the world around us. This is a great vocation, a calling to wake people up to what’s really important. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Jesús vino a cam-biar nuestra perspectiva.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    LITURGIA DE LAS HORAS IV

  • LL AA CC O L U M N AO L U M N A D E LD E L PP A S T O RA S T O R

TT H EH E PP A S T O RA S T O R ’’ SS CC O L U M NO L U M N For the last two weeks, I have been explaining the six movements of the Mass. I would like to emphasize the most important part of the Mass this week, the Eucharistic Prayer. As you have noticed, in last week’s letter, we learned that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life, and it contains the full treasure of the Catholic Church. It is the real presence of our Lord Jesus Christ in our world today. The Holy Eucharist makes us one with Jesus when we receive it. This week I had the opportunity to be present at the Most Reverend Myron J. Cotta’s preparation for his Episcopal Ordination as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. In his homily at the evening prayer, he reminded us that when we are present in the Holy Eucharist, we experience the same things as the Apostles experienced. We see, we hear, we touch, and we feel the true presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This presence of Christ is the one that we can bring to others through our own experience with the Lord. We become united as we remain one Church, the Church that our Lord, Jesus Christ, left us in order to carry on His mission of salvation. As Catholics, we need to be reminded that the Holy Eucharist makes the Church, and the Church makes the Holy Eucharist. There is no Church without the real presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ; that is, the Holy Eucharist. We gather together and celebrate the Holy Eucharist to make present, our Lord Jesus Christ and His suffering, His dying on the cross, and His glorious resurrection. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist following His words at the Last Supper: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25). The Eucharistic Prayer is the most sacred movement of the Mass.

I have been experiencing a lot of interruptions and distractions during the Mass; especially during the Eucharistic Prayer—cell phones ringing, people talking, children playing, people walking around, going outside, arriving late and leaving early, even people actually answering their phones during the Mass. Are these distractions more important than celebrating and being active and conscious participants in the Mass while being in full communion with Christ? During the entire Mass, from beginning to end we should be focused on all of the movements of the Mass with our full, conscious and active participation, especially during the Eucharistic Prayer. You have probably noticed recently that I have started having the altar servers use the bells. This practice is to call attention that something special and glorious is about to happen. It is also to remind us of what is happening on the altar. The gifts of bread and wine that we offer as a Church will soon become the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Let this Lenten season help you become more aware of the sacredness of the Mass and its true reverence, and through this reverence of the Holy Eucharist may you make the presence of Christ be visible to your family, friends and community.

    God Bless You.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
