A Christ-Driven Church! Building Faith & Family, Fellowship & Service

JUNE 2015

Greetings! The recent Pew Research Center recently conducted a massive survey on reli-gious preferences, questioning 35,071 adults. They compared their 2007 results

with 2015. The results show a significant decline in the Christian preference and identification. For example in the West (us) the largest single grouping is UNAFFILIATED (atheist, agnostic, nothing) at 28%, Catholic at 23%, evangelical Protestant at 22%, and mainline Protestant at 11%. Other religions make up the balance of the %ages. Not surprisingly the South registered the highest identification as Christian, with the East and the West as the lowest. Many cited the swing from traditional to revisionist definitions and behaviors on sexuality, marriage, and other social issues as the reason many leave their Christian past. Others see the loss of Christian num-bers as actually casual and cultural Christians now having the more secular permission to call themselves what they have been all along - unaffiliated. Either way, the numbers show that the Christian Church is less looked up to, more suspect, and often dismissed as a real player in the American fabric of society. These revisionist understandings are quickly becoming law and un-der Civil Rights jurisdictions those who do not comply are being punished. It is possible that soon the church will lose its tax exempt status because of its convictions on traditional and his-toric understanding on sexuality, marriage, and value of life and dying. All of this is very alarm-ing. What is the caring, devout Christian to do - hide, melt into the woodwork, slink into the shad-ows? Actually, the early church grew in times of great resistance and persecution. Our Christian brothers and sisters in many African and Asian nations are meeting the governmental and Islamic persecutions with bravery, courage, convictions, prayer, Scripture, and witnessing unto death the truth of the Gospel. So how does this affect us in our pretty slice of this beautiful Central Coast? Notice first of all that our doors are not being knocked down with people pouring in, that families are not very of-ten seeking us for their family spiritual anchoring, and that our current invitations bring very lim-ited response. Should we panic? No, instead we pray to believe the truth - that this is the Lord’s church and it is Spirit led and the Kingdom of God will prevail. Second, we serve all people with love that is Jesus’ Agape Love - not a calculated love with strings attached, but a selfless, serving love that allows for the Spirit to move in the one loved. Third, we do not lose heart. Fourth, we do not get intimidated. Fifth, we band together with other and all believers in witness to the Truth of Christ for all peoples. Sixth, we stick close together to build up, pray for, care for, and brain storm ideas for outreach. So much for the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! Actually, we enjoy those too, trusting the God who began a good work will see it to completion here at Saint John’s and in His world. We are inspired by Peter’s words when Jesus asks, “Do you wish also to go away?” Peter speaks for all of us when he replies, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to see and believe that You are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69). Let these be our words, our motto, our aspiration, or conviction, so that we may live in these exciting times!

In Christ’s Love, Pastor Randy

FROM THE May 9, 2015 MONTHLY MEETING

As follow up to the recent meeting of the fledgling North American Lutheran Church’s

South West Mission District, Council agreed to sign up as one of the Congregations on our new site within the NALCNetwork.com social page. Its purpose is to share mission and ministry ideas and projects with fellow NALC members.

At the same Mission District meeting of the NALC congregations in our area (3) we ap-

proved Pastor Marv Combs for an additional 2 year term as Dean over our 8 Mission Dis-trict congregations in Orange, L.A., Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. This is a volunteer position.

Again at the Mission District meeting those present agreed to support the Mission District

with approximately $300 per year of Benevolence, with the Treasurer of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church overseeing the income and expenses. Our Council approved $300 to be paid from our 2015 Benevolences to the Mission District.

Approved the distribution of the church’s Tithe of the Augie Sites Bequest to be divided

evenly, $5,000 to the Center for Christian Education Building Acquisition Fund in Mar-tin, Slovakia and $5,000 for our gift towards Year #2 of our Missionaries to China, Rev. Jeff and Mim Nellermoe.

Set as guidance for the Call Committee potential new Pastoral Compensation to fall be-

tween 10% less than, to 10% more than Pastor Randy’s current compensation. Set the date of the Congregation’s 50th Anniversary celebration to be Reformation Sun-

Thank you to all of you faithful people who participated in the two Congrega-tional Forums held on April 26 and May 3! Your input and participation was vi-tal to help us complete the Congregational Profile and accurately represent the ministries, needs, and concerns of this Spirit-filled family. As we know, God's timing is ABSOLUTELY perfect: we were able to submit our profile to the As-sistant to the Bishop in time for his review and in time to be posted on the next listing by the NALC (should be within the next week)! God is so good, all the time. We ask your fervent and continuous prayer for the following: 1) the Holy Spirit's guidance for the Call Committee as we prepare for the next phase of the call process, 2) God to touch the heart of our next Pastor, that he or she would be led to our little corner to carry out God's plan for Saint John's, and 3) for our most beloved Pastor Randy to "run and not grow weary, to walk and not be faint" and finish strong - and to make us all stronger - as we embark on this transition together!

God's blessings,

Janice Goodwin and the Call Committee

Meet a need… Have a need….

Welcome to a new monthly page for the Eagle. Kind of like a Craigslist for Saint John’s.

Submit your request by the 15th of the month. Because of non-profit rules no dollar amount will be posted.

Hello My Brothers & Sisters. I find myself in need of a room for rent. If any of you

might be willing and/or able to share your home in such a way, Please Contact Me: or Pastor Randy or Jeff . Thank you and Delight In THE LORD Wes

Greetings From The Good News Team. Our committee is working on an exciting new

project for this fall and we need your collective help. We’re looking for your favorite local scenic pictures. AG, Five Cities, SLO County and distinctively Central Coast. Have any to share, contact Diane or Jeff

Hey All You Little Eagle Readers! I’m looking to secure a small tent-trailer or the

equivalent for the week of June 15th thru 21st to accommodate myself, my sister and my two adult children. We’re going to The Live Oak Music Festival next to Lake Cachu-ma. If anyone is willing and/or able, please let me know. Thank You Jeff

THE GAS COMPANY HAS ARRIVED! Having now secured all the permits necessary, the So. Ca. Gas Co. will be trenching and replacing the natural gas main that runs down the length of Los Berros Road. For at least 4 months they are using a portion of our Los Berros Rd. parking lot for their storage and trail-ers. They began with fencing off the storage section the week of May 18. We have the smaller, quieter, and cleaner of the two sites. We will be losing a number of parking spots during this time and more of us will perhaps want to park on the Valley Road side. In return for the use of our property the Gas Co. is donating a nice sum of money for the church. Property Committee (Frank) and the Church Office (Cheryl) are the contact people for this project.

HAVE YOU NOTICED?

There’s a new playground in town and it is right in our own back yard! It is beautiful and the kids are excited. The old playground which was 18 years old did not meet current safe-ty or ADA standards. Thank you to Ron Lindstaedt who led the planning and installation team; the Property Committee who approved the changes to the property; Roger Ormonde who assisted with the excavation and preparation; to Augie Sites who loved children and was loved by all for remembering St. John’s in his will; and to the church Council who ap-proved using some of those funds to upgrade the playground. It will be known as ‘Augie’s Playground’ and we are sure it will make Augie smile as he looks down and watches the children play. A dedication is planned for Sunday, June 21, after first service.

More good news from your Good News Team! This month is written by Diane .

Through out my first 26 years had you asked if I was a Christian, I would have said of course. However it was in September 1972 that Jesus Christ became my constant com-panion through His Spirit, my Savior, my Lord and my best friend. My mother was addicted to a cocktail of prescribed drugs that had turned her into a zombie. After consulting with her doctor, Bill and I had her stay at our home while she reduced the drugs to the absolute necessary ones. At the end of three days my Mom was back and she had no withdrawal problems whatsoever. I was astonished and decided that God had helped us through the nightmare and that we should go to Church to thank Him. The Church was beginning a new program, “Walk in the Spirit,” So Mom and I joined. You were to read selected Scriptures every day and pray for the Lord to open your eyes to His word, pray for understanding, pray for a close, connected relationship with Him through His Spirit and pray that He would reveal Himself to you through His Word in every aspect of your life. Our Father was faithful, I asked, and He was more than willing to answer, and to meet me where I was. The more I gave to Him of me, every decision, every worry, every joy, the more abundantly He blessed me with His presence, His guidance and His comfort. Tribulations of this world still plague me but He was/is with me through everyone of them. The joy of the Lord, the sure knowledge of who He is and how much He loves me sustains me in every situation, both rejoicing and sorrow-ing. Humans need light, air, water, and food to survive. He is the Light of the world, His breath is in us, His living water will flow from us, He is the bread of life. (Warren Wiersbe) We were made to have fellowship with Him. To enjoy His company and He to enjoy ours. So, do you want to get closer? Do you want to get connected? Do you want more of Him in your life? Start with a devotional with Scripture, read it everyday. Repeat the Scripture throughout the day. Pray as suggested above. Every day, about everything. He will be faithful to you as He is to me. You be faithful in your pursuit. I promise, He will meet you and fill your life with His presence.

“Mother and Child” Framed Oil Painting - Fellowship Hall Front Wall

Soon after the Celebration Chorus began their weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals in our

Fellowship Hall a few months ago, one of the members, Donna noticed a lonely, blank wall. This inspired her to donate to Saint John’s one of her paintings completed a num-ber of years ago. This religious scene is the tender relationship of baby Jesus and his mother Mary. Using a black and white picture of an old ‘master’ as inspiration, Donna added the shawl onto the mother and a true baby’s face on the child. Donna’s choice of colors - yellow and purple - strike a chord of energy, illumination, passion, and deep love. Such love of a mother to her first born is countered by the babe’s open eyed gaze into his destiny’s future. Donna, who lives in A.G., has been painting for 15 years and singing in the ‘lead’ section in the choir for 13 years. We thank Donna for enriching our congregation with this beautiful painting. Our Shar TerBorch is also a “lead” (or Sopra-no) with the Celebration Chorus, and we thank her for facilitating this gift and inter-view. Interestingly, Donna used a piece of masonite upon which to paint “Mother and Child”, and not canvas, as is the usual medium.

Senior Luncheon: June 16, 12:00 Noon Come and Join Us!

(Early Date Due to VBS)

"God’s call often asks us to let go of things that are com-fortable to us in order to let something else come in their place. This is often no easy task. The threshold between

what we know and what we intend to do can be large. But letting our call fall dormant and silent within us does not serve God or us. Some experienced spiritual directors would even say that some of the illness and “disease” in our lives comes from bottling up our call within us. A related tragedy might be that an unspoken and unanswered call leaves a hole in the world because of untapped possibilities. Sounding our call helps to create the space for the Spirit to bring about what God is intending in the world. God is calling for our Ministry to be good listeners, to affirm, to be present in your life. Look to God, look to your heart and see your calling. Sign up for Stephen Minister Training to-day. Please Contact Kerry or Robin for an application.
