SEASON OF ADVENT~CHRISTMAS 17th December 2017

Make His Paths Straight!

THE WORD THIS WEEK ‘A voice cries in the wilderness’: The same line as last Sunday. A powerful voice, because they all come out to hear and see. They / we are still looking for… Who? What are we hoping for? How will we recognise it, or Him? John opens the ‘via negativa’, eliminating what we do know to get an inkling of what more may be beyond. Like John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, both Isaiah and Paul point us to the Spirit, to the high gifts she reveals and brings, and to the joy we find in trusting beyond our vision, like bride or groom in excited hope. Gaudete, ‘Rejoice!

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 3)

Isaiah 61: 1 – 2, 10 – 11. I exalt for joy in the Lord.

Response: Luke 1: 46 – 54. My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my saviour. He looks at his servant in her nothingness; hence forth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy.

1 Thessalonians 5: 16 – 24. May you all be kept safe, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of the Lord.

Acclamation for the Gospel: Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia! The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia!

John 1: 6 – 8, 19 – 28. There stands among you, unknown to you, the one who is coming after me.

Prayer of the Faithful: R/. Come, Lord Jesus, come!

“Love cannot bear not to have sight of what it loves. That is why holy people felt their life worth nothing if they could not see the Lord. That is why love that longs to see God has the spirit of devotion. Finally that is why the nations fashioned idols:- in these false things they wanted to see with their own eyes what they were worshipping.” Saint Peter Chrysologus

Today is ‘GAUDETE (or Rejoicing) SUNDAY’ and also ‘BAMBINELLI SUNDAY’. Please lay the baby Jesus figure from your crib set under the Advent wreath, to be blessed at the end of Mass, so that you can then take it home to put in the crib on Christmas night, the first and best Christmas present.

‘Make a Straight Path’: For health and safety and, more importantly, for a proper and

dignified celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord, plenty of preparation and volunteering for the many different rolls and ministries is necessary. In particular we need Welcomers and

Ushers, especially to manage the large crowds at 6.30 Mass on Christmas Eve: If you can help, please sign up on the list in the porch. Thank you. We also need all the ‘regulars’ to be bold and loud and confident in their actions and responses at Mass, to open the way and lead visiting worshippers less familiar with our rituals. This too is part of our ‘Ministry of Welcome’.

We are invited to join in the HOSPITAL CAROL SERVICE at YYF, Ystrad

Mynach Hospital, this Tuesday at 7pm in the Cafeteria: Carols, poems, and readings, followed by coffee and mince pies: All are welcome!

‘RORATE MASS’, ‘pour down you dawning light, O Lord’: Following a

tradition of an early morning Mass to finalise our preparations for the birth of Our Saviour, we will have an early (6.30am!) Mass on Thursday, 21st, the Shortest Day, followed by breakfast: Book that dawn!

And then it’s Christmas. Oh No It’s Not! The fourth Sunday of Advent comes first, with the usual Mass times.

CHRSITMAS MASS TIMES: The Vigil Mass of Christmas Eve (with Blessing of the Crib and the Readings of the

Mass in the Night) will be at 6.30pm, with Carols before starting at 6.00pm. Please

arrive in good time so as not to disturb the carols and prayer. If you come in after 6pm,

please do so quietly and respectfully.

The Midnight Mass of Christmas (with Readings of the Mass in the Night) will

be at 12 Midnight, with Carols before starting at 11.30pm. Come to share the

wonder.

The Day Mass of Christmas day (with its own Readings) will be at 10.30am.

What better way to start the dawn and new day of our salvation.

‘SHARE THE JOURNEY’: Pope Francis has asked us to share

the journey of people on the move: War, persecution, natural disaster and poverty force millions of people from their homes. Most come from

poor countries and seek safety in poor countries nearby. As we remember the journey of Joseph and the expectant Mary to Bethlehem, and their latter flight to Egypt with the infant Jesus, we cannot turn away. The Migrants are human beings, with hopes, fears, desires and stories to share, just like each one of us. As World leaders negotiate two global agreements on refugees and migration between now and autumn 2018 when they are due to be agreed at the United Nations, the Pope asks us to work on our leaders not to turn away. To learn more, please go to www. cafod.org.uk/Campaign/Refugee-action. You may also enjoy the Cafod Advent Calendar on www.cafod.org.uk/Pray/Advent-Calendar.

JUST DESSERTS for the Night Shelter! With grateful thanks and more requests we are looking for Desserts for the Night Shelter on each Sunday evening from the 31st December through to the 25th February. Nick Trodd will be at the back of Church at 6:30pm Mass and Cliff Bray at the 10:30 Mass to make up the list. We are most grateful for these donations and Thank you.

CHRISTIAN PRAYER (From the Catechism of the Catholic Church) Section Two: The Lord’s Prayer: ‘Our Father’ Article 3: The Seven Petitions.

V. ‘And Forgive Us Our Trespasses As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us’. And forgive us our trespasses….

(2839) With bold confidence, we began praying to our Father. In begging him that his name

be hallowed, we were in fact asking him that we ourselves might be always made more holy.

But though we are clothed with the baptismal garment, we do not cease to sin, to turn away

from God. Now, in this new petition, we return to him like the prodigal son and, like the tax

collector, recognize that we are sinners before him. (Cf. Luke 15: 11-32; 18: 13.) Our petition begins

with a ‘confession’ of our wretchedness and his mercy. Our hope is firm because, in his Son,

‘we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.’ (Colossians 1: 14; Ephesians 1: 7.) We find the

efficacious and undoubted sign of his forgiveness in the sacraments of his Church. (Cf. Matthew

26: 28; John 20: 23.)
