Prayer for the New Year

God, thank you for a new year.

May everyone in our family be

willing to begin anew with a

clean slate. We know that you

are always ready to forgive us.

Help us to be willing to forgive

ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new

year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest

desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from

doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety

about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace

with you from now on.

dispuesto a perdonarnos. Ayúdanos a estar siempre

Did you know?

The feast of the Epiphany, which we observe today, invites us to recognize the wise women and men who are with us today, companions on our journey. Such people teach us not to be content with the mediocre, but to gaze toward the star, to be attracted by what is good, true and beautiful; by God who is all this and much more. (Pope Francis 1/6/14) Who/what is good, true, and beautiful in your life? How does this remind you of God? How do you bring the good, the true, the beautiful to others?

Who knew?

In the Month of January, the Catholic Diocese of Richmond

celebrates Respect Life Month. There will be a Second

Collection on January 22. Pope Francis reminds us that "from

each tiny child waiting to be born, to individuals nearing death,

all are precious and deserve our care and protection. Women and

men suffering after abortion, individuals tempted to end their

lives, couples longing to conceive a child, people pushed to the

margins of society by a "throwaway culture," expectant mothers

facing challenging pregnancies, and every other person—each

"has a place in God's heart from all eternity"

Something New and Exciting! St. Gerard’s will be starting up a Book Club! It will start

in January and be facilitated by our secretary, Bev Stith.

We will meet once every 2 months with the first book dis-

cussion on Tuesday, January 17 at 1 pm in the commons.

Discussions should last not longer than 1 1/2 hours.

Our first book is The Shack by William Paul Young

What was your experience reading the book? Did you get into it right away? Were you sad, bored?

If you could ask the author a question, what would it be?

Was the ending satisfying? If not, how would you change it?

Hope to see you on the 17th!

Something new and exciting starting in 2017! (for all the social media fans!) Look for random facebook postings (a couple of times of

month) where we will ask a question and the first one to

answer correctly (using our facebook page) will win a $5

Kroger gift card...or something similar.

Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold,

frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening

their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to

follow all year long. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we

are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we

pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that

one thing that means the most to us.

The combined assignment schedule for the

EOMHC (Eucharistic Ministers) and Lectors is

available. Please see or call Jim Allen

The Gospel at Home. This Week’s Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12. The Feast of the Epiphany is considered by Eastern churches to be far more important than Christmas, the day celebrating Jesus’ birth. On Epiphany, which means manifestation, Jesus is revealed as far more than the King of the Jews. He is revered by secular kings, showing that his Kingship is for a kingdom that reigns over all the world. Just as the three kings sought out Jesus to pay him homage, Matthew’s story of the visit of the Magi from the East makes it clear that Jesus comes to all people, of his time and ours, who seek God.Pray Together. To celebrate the Epiphany, plan to have a mini pilgrimage of your own to Mass next week. Your family can decide whether you will turn off the radio or play Christian music, which prayers you will pray together, and how to incorporate other traditions that are integral to your family’s faith life. Write down your pilgrimage plan and place it where you will see it before going to Church.

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK 2017January 8-14, 2017Creating a Culture of EncounterFor nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human trafficking.

The theme for National Migration Week 2017 draws attention to Pope Francis' call to create a culture of encounter, and in doing so to look beyond our own needs and wants to those of others around us.

In the homily given at his first Pentecost as pope, he emphasized the importance of encounter in the Christian faith: "For me this word is very important. Encounter with others. Why? Because faith is an encounter with Jesus, and we must do what Jesus does: encounter others."

With respect to migrants, too often in our contemporary culture we fail to encounter them as persons, and instead look at them as others. We do not take the time to engage migrants in a meaningful way, but remain aloof to their presence and suspicious of their intentions. During this National Migration Week, let us all take the opportunity to engage migrants as children of God who are worthy of our attention and support.

This year the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops(USCCB) will analyze the topic of Central America children who came with an adult and are detained in immigration centers, human trafficking, the high number of undocumented immigrants in detention centers and the massive deportations.

The USCCB exhorted the media to support the propagation of these topics that will be addressed during National Migration Week, also to contribute in educating the members in their communities about the Catholic Church position in regard to immigration.
