This month we begin with the High School graduaon Mass. I am sure that our high school graduates – and our college graduates – can count on the prayers of our parish as they take this new step in their lives either into the world of work or the world of higher educaon. Educaon is a key element of our civilizaon. It is necessary to be able to funcon in our highly advanced society so as to provide for ourselves and our families as well as leading sasfying lives. Today we hear people speak of educaon as a very long job training. Educaon is much more than that. It is the means that allows us to receive the wisdom of past generaons, as well as growing in the virtues – those habits of mind and will that dispose us to do good. All that is done at school – classes and tests, projects and sports – can be means to allow the student to grow in wisdom and virtue as well as knowledge and skills. I hope that our high school graduates will use their me in further educaon in that way too. We pray that our graduates will persevere in their faith. That, if and when their faith is challenged, they will seek out those who can help them find the answers to their doubts or confusion – and that they will be open to the Churchs teaching and wisdom. We pray too that they will live with respect for their neighbor – at college or at work – and live their relaonships in a virtuous way: with humility, honesty, generosity, courtesy, kindness, and chasty. We pray that they will have good friends and good company who will provide a healthy and happy community within which to flourish as human beings, and that they will be protected from the vices that can tempt us so powerfully as we go out into the world. We pray that they will be happy and successful in all their endeavors, and this new step in their lives will be a me of blessing and flourishing. ~Fr.
