We welcome all members and visitors to Saint George Parish. We hope that our prayer with you has deepened your love of God.
July 27th will mark the 49th anniversary of the promulgation of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae. The cultural historian, Jacques Barzun, suggests that the sexual revolution began in the 1890s with the likes of Nietzsche and Oscar Wilde. World War II stifled that revolution for a brief time. By the time that Pope Paul VI wrote this prophetic letter to the Church and the world it had become a full-blown reality. Its reiteration of the Church’s teaching concerning the sinfulness of preventing the conception of a child using artificial means touched a very raw nerve in our culture. As a result, the Church has seen many of her children abandon her, and many remain while rejecting her authority in their lives. In Humanae Vitae Pope Paul reminds us that ‘to experience the gift of married love while respecting the laws of conception is to acknowledge that one is not the master of the sources of life but rather the minister of the design established by the Creator. Just as man does not have unlimited dominion over his body in general, so also, and with more particular reason, he has no such dominion over his specifically sexual faculties, for these are concerned by their very nature with the generation of life, of which God is the source. "Human life is sacred—all men must recognize that fact," Our predecessor Pope John XXIII recalled. "From its very inception it reveals the creating hand of God."’ In other words, although we may be able to manipulate the natural processes and laws that govern the generation of a new life, we may not do that because those biological laws are part of God’s creation and therefore of His dominion. God generates new life through the mother and father who are, as it were, the instruments of His work. Upsetting those laws affects us on many levels – not just biologically but also personally, socially, even economically, and especially in our relationship with God. The passing on of life is an incredible part of the human experience. It is also a delicate part of our makeup that we must respect. I ask you to pray that we may all be open to this important part of our moral lives. ~Fr. King
