FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME 3
May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
From the Pastor
In the Archdiocese of the St. Louis, there are over 110 Catholic grade schools and 28 Catholic high schools to choose from, plus two Catholic colleges at Fontbonne and St. Louis University. There are also over a hundred P.S.R. programs. This has been a year like no other for all of us and I want to give a huge shout out to our entire School and PSR Community at SFA for their care, support and good will during this pandemic. I am utterly amazed at all the good work that has been done and how healthy our students are. I would like to particularly thank our School and PSR Principal, Mrs. Beth Bartolotta for her leadership and guidance. I also thank all of our teachers and catechists for their dedicated ministry to our youth. The lessons learned at our schools help to enhance the faith that is lived in our homes. During this Catholic Schools Week, please continue to spread the good news about SFA School. Thanks
to all who support Catholic education in our Parish through prayer and contributions to The Francis Fund.
Q. What about the ‘chain messages’ forwarded or sent saying pass this to 12 or 15 people, then you will receive a miracle. If you don’t pass it on will something happen to you? How to explain? A. Most likely you’ve come across emails or posts that make promises to you if you pass it on. For example, there may be a special prayer sent to you with the
attachment at the bottom, “pass this on to twelve friends and you will receive your answer to prayer within twelve days.” So is this legitimate? No, it’s not. It’s superstition. However, with that said there is one clarification worth making. But first let’s look at the superstitious part. God does not make His grace and mercy contingent upon you forwarding an email to several friends. Perhaps the prayer that is included is quite beautiful and worth praying. But, nonetheless, the effect of that prayer is not dependent upon you following the instructions of an email. Only Christ and His Church have the authority to attach grace to prayers. The Church does so through indulgences. So if you receive one of these emails it may be best to pass on the prayer part but to remove the promise or warning. As for the clarification mentioned above, there have been certain private revelations given to mystics that do attach certain promises to certain prayers. Those private revelations and promises must always be evaluated by the Church. If approved, we can trust that God is offering a special grace through those prayers. But the key is that we seek out the guidance of our Church on all private revelations.
Tuesday, February 2 – The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord. We will bless candles at Mass as is the custom on the Feast of the Presentation. There will also be a 2 pack of candles available for your home use for a donation of $5. Wednesday, February 3 – The Feast of St Blaise. Instead of the individual blessing of throats this year, due to the pandemic, the priest will impart the blessing over the entire congregation at the end of the Mass. Wednesday, February 17 – Ash Wednesday. Distribution of ashes will look differently this year due to the pandemic by having the ashes placed on the tops of our heads. The sprinkling of ashes on the crown of the head is a very ancient symbol which recalls the biblical method of putting on sackcloth and ashes as a sign of penance. As we read in the Book of Nehemiah, “On the twenty-fourth day of this month, the people of Israel gathered while fasting and wearing sackcloth, their heads covered with dust” (9:1).

Principal’s Corner
A message from Beth Bartolotta
SFA School Principal
Happy Catholic Schools Week! We are so blessed to have been able to offer in-person learning for almost 100 school days so far! If you would have told me that last August, I would have been surprised. While we certainly have students who voluntarily quarantine or are mandated to do so due to exposure, and those who have chosen virtual learning from the beginning, the majority of our students are in the building and ALL are learning. Thank you, Lord! Thank you students, teachers, parents, and parish for making this possible through your support. There is much to celebrate this year. Our enrollment in the K-8 program has increased about 12%. We are full or nearly full at
several grade levels and have an established wait list in one grade. While Covid conditions forced us to take a step back on some of the innovative instructional changes
we’ve been making in order to socially distance, other innovative practices helped us to be better prepared than many other schools for this year of blended learning. Our school has already been using a Learning Community model for the past four years. In this model, teachers and instructional aides teach in teams and learning is more personalized. Students take an active part in their learning and teachers work with students to create learning plans that fit them best. In addition, technology is the third teacher in every class at St. Francis. One-on-one devices in K-8 and carts of devices in preschool DO NOT mean that technology becomes the teacher or that students are sitting in front of them all day. Rather, technology does what it does best: delivers information easily and effectively in multiple places; provides adaptive programming that levels up or down to match the child’s readiness; and provides instant feedback to teachers when it would have taken days to grade and use the results of
assessments. Now teachers and students can use this tool to more effectively provide the just-in-time instruction needed. Most importantly, like St. Francis parish, our school and PSR both embrace an active faith component as well. Daily Mass continues for our students in 1-8 and regular Mass continues for Kindergarten. Our PSR program was moved to Sunday to incorporate Mass attendance with faith learning. Preschool through fourth grades visit the Atrium each week, as do our PSR students. Middle school students use project based learning to apply faith teaching learned in their various faith courses and electives. Seminarian Bobby joined our middle school teachers this year as a
teacher in those courses. Students of all ages are engaged in active and meaningful service projects, collaborating with SFA’s very own St. Vincent DePaul Society and outside agencies connected to our Catholic Church. If you’d like to visit our school, we have openings available for tours on Sunday. Please visit the link in the bulletin to schedule a time. We’d love for you to see all the great things happening in your parish school!

From consecrationtostjoseph.org :
What does it mean to consecrate yourself to St. Joseph? “What does it mean for a person to be consecrated to St. Joseph? Well, it basically means that you acknowledge that he is your spiritual father, and you want to be like him. To show it, you entrust yourself entirely into his paternal care so that he can help you acquire his virtues and become holy. Total consecration to St. Joseph means you make a formal act of filial entrustment to your spiritual father so that he can take care of your spiritual well-being and lead you to God. The person who consecrates himself to St. Joseph wants to be as close to their spiritual father as possible, to the point of resembling him in virtue and holiness. Saint Joseph, in turn, will give those consecrated to him his undivided attention, protection, and guidance." St. Francis of Assisi will be facilitating group consecration to St. Joseph beginning Monday, February 15th. To participate, please sign up below. You will need to acquire a copy of the book "Consecration to St. Joseph" by Donald H. Calloway, MIC. Once a week until March 19th, Father Yates will lead the group discussion on the previous week's readings. Visit https://forms.gle/iUZtW14LdsVxpfHb9 to register and for more information.

Sign up to work the fish fry!
That’s right, SFA, the fish fry is back! We’ll be doing things a little differently this year to ensure that we can keep everyone safe during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, but rest assured that we’ve got you covered for Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. If you would like to volunteer to help with this year’s fish fry, please contact Sandy Suter by February 1st. Call (314) 701-6659 to help out. (NOTE: This is a new number from last year; you must use the new number and not the one in the Guide Book.) This year’s fish fry dates are: 2/17, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, and 4/2. We can’t wait to serve you!
“Know also that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual exercises of the day. True, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, for He has made the promise, ‘Ask, and you shall receive,’ but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace.” – St. Alphonsus Liguori
Adorers Needed
Eucharistic Adorers are needed throughout the week to sit with Jesus in our chapel. Feel free to stop in any time the church is open for prayer, but if you’re able to commit to an hour each week, please contact Judy at (314) 346-7009 or at [email protected]. Adorers are needed at the times listed below, but we can never have too many if you’d like to commit an hour besides one listed below.
