From the Rector - Gratitude
November is an unusual month. Culturally, we are past Halloween and
ready for full-on Christmas preparation. Yet in the Church, we continue to
mark the successive Sundays after Pentecost (which have begun to number
in the 20s). We are still in what our Godly Play students call the Green
Growing Season, where we quietly see what God is up to in our lives and in
our world.
It is, as always, a good season for gratitude. The simple act of intentionally
remembering one or two things each day for which you are thankful has a
way of slowly transforming your life. When we take the time to offer God
thanks for both things simple and profound, we are on the lookout for
reasons to be grateful. It also gives us pause to remember that God is, in
fact, the source of all we have and all we are.
I hope you’ll join me in giving thanks to God for all the blessings we’ve
received at a service of Holy Eucharist at 9 AM on Thanksgiving Day. This
is a new (or perhaps renewed) practice for us, and it’s my hope that it’s an
opportunity on a day that can be overfilled with good things to give thanks
to the One who makes it all possible, and to be fed with the Food that
nourishes us inwardly as well as outwardly.
Know that I am grateful for you, for all you are and for all you do.
Your Brother in Christ,
Andrew

Groundbreaking Ceremony and first coffee hour
On Sunday, November 7, parishioners of St. David’s raised the shovel at the groundbreaking. The first coffee
hour was held outside on this chilly day in 1989, thirty years ago this month! For those of you who remember:
From left: Dick Tonneson, Ray Scalabrini, Woody Adams, Enid Thoms, the Rev. Fred Reynolds, Earle
Patterson, the Rev. Charles Fisher, the Rev. George M. Chappell, and Bill Rhines, Sr.
The following year on September 1, 1990, St. David’s was officially consecrated. Stay tuned for more
30th anniversary celebrations to follow in 2020.
All hands on deck!
Our ever busy Building and Grounds crew will have a list of
projects on hand for skills of all levels. The kitchen needs a
thorough cleaning after both the Italian Supper and the Harvest
Fair. Please sign up on the board in the Great Hall if you are
able to help in any way. For more information about what is
needed, contact either Bruce Gowdy [email protected], or
Earl Tracy at [email protected].
PROJECTS:
Chip brush
Repair sidewalk by side door
Drain and bring all hoses in

Hands Across Our Community -
Help Set a New Record!
St. David’s aims to collect 30,000 pounds of food
in 2019! All donated food and monies help fill the
shelves at St. Martha’s Pantry in Kennebunk. If
you prefer to shop, there’s a blue bin in the
Narthex for food items. If you’d rather give
money, you’ll find special envelopes marked
“HAOC” on church seats on the final Sunday of
the month, and on every Sunday during Advent.
St. Elizabeth’s Pantry Needs
Winter Coats and Diapers
Responding to St. Elizabeth’s urgent request, St.
David’s is collecting new and gently worn winter
coats and jackets for children and adults. The
pantry is also very short on diapers. From the time
refugees began arriving in Portland last June, St.
Elizabeth’s has provided essential clothing,
personal care products, household items, and
much more to help these families. Most of the
refugees came with just a few belongings - they
now desperately need warm outerwear for the
frigid weather coming our way soon. Please use
the collection bins provided in the Great Hall.
Alternative Christmas Fair is
Coming in December!
Mark your calendars for Sundays, December 8
and 15. After both services, Outreach will hold its
annual Alternative Christmas Fair to benefit
Harmony LaSalle School in Haiti. More
information will be available in the December
Messenger about the Fair and this important
ministry.
Laundry Love Can Use Your
Extra Quarters
Laundry Love has been helping Biddeford
families with their laundry expenses since April
2018. Once a month at Booms Laundry,
volunteers help between 30-35 families get their
laundry done at no cost to them. This amounts to
about $400 per month for washer/dryer expenses
alone.
You can support Laundry Love by saving your
quarters. If you have rolled quarters, you can put
them in the plate offering, marked “For Laundry
Love”. If you have loose quarters, you’ll find a
collection jar beneath the Outreach Board in the
Great Hall, along with a laundry basket for
donations of laundry pods or dryer sheets.
Thank you for your support of St. David's Outreach
ministries. If you have questions or suggestions, or
would like to volunteer for any of our programs or
activities, please contact Nancy Clinton at
[email protected]. We always welcome your
involvement and support!
Veterans Day
November 11, 2019
On Monday, November 11, 2019, St. David’s Church
office will be closed in observation of Veterans Day.
Maine Reads the Bible!
Miqra: Standing on the Rock is the Diocesan fall
youth event for 6th - 12th graders, but people of all
ages across the diocese can play a part! Miqra is
Hebrew for "the public proclamation of Scripture."
Individuals and congregations from across the
diocese are invited to join together to read through
the entire Bible this weekend, November 1-3. St.
David’s will be joining in on Sunday in the
Library, after each service.

On Saturday, October 26 at 9:00 am,
the 200th Convention of the Diocese
"Dirigo: On Christ the Solid
Rock" convened at USM to kickoff a
year of celebrating the
bicentennial of the diocese, hold
elections for open governance
offices, debate and adopt resolutions and approve a
budget for 2020.
Four lay delegates from St. David’s attended along with
the Rev’s. Andrew D’Angio White, Kris Conley, and
Gail Chandler, The delegates were Rick Lombardi,
Dennis Ouellette Davis Robinson, and Amy Webb-
Prosser.
At 3:00 pm, the newly consecrated bishop, the Rt. Rev.
Thomas James Brown, was formally welcomed at the
Cathedral of Saint Luke in Portland where convention
had reassembled. He was seated in the cathedra, the
bishop's chair, symbolic of the office. Bishop Brown
also delivered his convention address during the liturgy.
If you’d like to learn about what resolutions were
passed, or who was selected for a committee, or if you
have any questions in general about the Convention,
please feel free to ask any of these folks.

Donation Forms Now
Available!
Giving flowers to
adorn the sanctuary
throughout the year
is a wonderful way
to honor departed
loved ones or to
give thanks for
God’s many blessings.
At St. David’s, Christmas is a time to glorify
God with a beautifully decorated sanctuary.
This year, in order to ensure an accurate
budget for Christmas flowers, the Flower
Guild is asking for forms and donations as
early as possible. Forms can be found in the
Narthex and on the Information table in the
Great Hall.
The deadline is December 8, and the order
form is available on the last page of this
publication as well as at the church. Thank
you for your support in beautifying our
sanctuary!
Advent begins December 1st.
Stay tuned for Advent materials for children and
adults, worship opportunities a special advent day
retreat (further in this issue), and, of course, Saint
David’s annual Christmas Pageant rehearsals.

Saint David’s has 3 ways to communicate with parishioners and friends:
E-mail - If we have your contact information, you should be receiving all of
these communications.
The Instant Messenger is a weekly electronic communication which
comes in the form of weekly news updates, similar to the announcements
printed in the Sunday bulletins. From the Rector communications are
messages specifically from Fr. Andrew.
The Messenger is a periodic publication that is offered both electronically and by mail.
If you find you are not receiving one or all of these communications, please contact the office so we
can update our files. We also recognize special occasions and events in parishioner’s lives. If you’d
like your special date(s) recognized, send those in as well. All information may be sent to

At Saint David’s we have a
vigil candle, also known as a
sanctuary lamp, located on the
Aumbry shelf in the
Sanctuary. This candle burns
continuously from the Easter
Vigil until Maundy Thursday to
symbolize the omnipresence of God as
well as to indicate the presence of the
Reserved Sacrament.
Individuals and families may “sponsor”
the vigil candle for a particular month if
they wish to remember a loved one or for
whom they wish to give thanksgiving. If
interested, please contact Linda Rhines
with your name and the name of the
honoree, or complete a Vigil Candle form
found on the Information Table in the
Great Hall and leave in the Church office.
The cost for the vigil candle is $25 for the
month. Checks may be made out to Saint
David’s Episcopal Church with “vigil
candle” written in the memo section and
left in the church office.
A tiny flame is all
that is needed to indicate
the presence of the Sacred;
A tiny flame by the Aumbry ~
A tiny flame in our hearts.

Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
The gift of light comes when the darkest is deepest.
Such paradoxes have power – power to lead us by way of seeming contradictions or sudden reversals to a
threshold of grace. In Advent we prepare our hearts by journeying not away from but into the darkness.
There we find a womb of renewal where the mind falters but the spirit blooms. Join us as we pray with
scripture, poems and images rich with Advent paradox as we wait expectantly for the birth of Christ.
