Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryThe Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holy day of obliga-tion in our Church. This date commemorates Mary’s assumption, a reference to the belief in a real, physical elevation of her sinless soul and incorrupt body into Heaven. We celebrate this every year on August 15.

We are called to be one Body of Christ. We are a universal Church, and we all celebrate the Eucharist together. As practicing Catholics, we are called to go to Mass on a holy day of obligation. It might be different and a sacrifice to go to Mass during the week, but as Catholics, we are asked to be countercultural and sacrificial. This is

one of the ways we show God we place him as our highest priority. The Aggie Catholic Blog* has a great list of reasons why it is good for us to observe these holy days. These are some of the

benefits to celebrating a holy day:

1. We get to unite with Catholics throughout the world to show how special the day is.2. We get to unite with Christ in the Eucharist. 3. We get to worship God and love him.4. We get to put our priorities in order once again.5. We get to pray in the highest form of prayer there is—the Mass.6. We get to stand out from the crowd and proclaim to the world our faith.7. We get the opportunity to share the faith with a friend who is non-Catholic and may not understand

why we do such things.

Amen? Amen!

A GOSPEL REFLECTION by Father Jason Williams

MATTHEW 14:22-23

“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

A G

T H E C O R N E R

Behind the outward events of today’s Gospel passage there is a profound insight

into the heart of our Lord. He has separated himself from his disciples, retreating into

the mountains of Galilee to pray. While he is in conversation with his Father, a small

boat is being tossed about in an unexpected storm on the sea. In their danger the disci-

ples likely feel alone, abandoned, and vulnerable. We might well think that it would have been better for Jesus to have

been there in the boat with his disciples, to guide them and protect them from harm, but he is nowhere to be found.

The disciples struggle by themselves.

In the tumultuous times of our lives, in those struggles when we most need the Lord’s presence, it can often seem

like Jesus has abandoned us. The great truth, though, is that he never abandons us. When we are in the most trying

circumstances, he is interceding for us with his Father. He retreats to the mountains to pray for us. The Lord delves

into the mystery of the perfect love that he shares with his Father in order to draw out of that love the strength that we

need to persevere through challenges.

Think of the concern, the heartache, the sleepless nights that you have when a friend or loved one is suffering. The

Lord Jesus goes with those same sentiments of love into the heart of the Father on our behalf whenever we need him

most. With a God who loves us so much, who constantly is preoccupied with our good, what is there to fear?

The First Secret of Our Lady of FatimaOn July 13, 1917, Our Lady showed the first secret of Fatima to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. This secret was a

vision of Hell. According to Sister Lucia in her memoir written in 1941, “Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire

which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent

burning embers. This vision was very frightening and only lasted an instant. Sister Lucia was very grateful to our

Lady who had already prepared the 3 children in the first apparition, to take them to heaven.

Meet the SaintsSt. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)He became a lawyer, receiv-

ing doctorates in Canon

and Civil Law at the age of

sixteen. At nineteen he was

successfully practicing law,

but grew disenchanted with

the profession. While vis-

iting the local Hospital for

Incurables, he had a vision

and was told to consecrate his life solely to God. In response,

he dedicated himself to the religious life, even while suffering

persecution from his family. He fed the poor, instructed fam-

ilies, reorganized the seminary and religious houses, taught

theology, and wrote.

He was known best for his sermons, especially his ability

to convert those who were alienated from the faith and for

his work in moral and spiritual theology. His writings on

moral, theological, and ascetic matters had great impact and

have survived through the years, especially his Moral Theol-

ogy and his Glories of Mary. For his work in moral theology

he was declared a Doctor of the Church.

COMING THIS FALL:The Reformation, with Msgr. Frank LaneMondays from Sept. 25, 2017 - Nov. 6, 20177-8:30 PM at St. Anthony Parish in the Lighthouse CafeteriaCost: FREE

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the formal explosion

that took place in Wittenburg, Saxony, on October 31, 1517.

Join with us as Msgr. Lane revisits the Reformation in

an attempt to help us understand more completely what

happened and what it means for us today. We will look at

the events of the revolution and explore the “unintended”

secular consequences that have a long and deep precedent

in the western world.

AUG12-13

Two weeks ago, Fr. Jason, Msgr. Lane and I went on a six-day vacation to trace the steps of Msgr. Lane’s early life. On the journey together, we went to a family cemetery plot where Msgr. Lane’s namesake is buried and to the cemetery where his pre-made grave marker is installed (see photo, top left). We also went to Msgr. Lane’s childhood home in Olean, N.Y., where we saw the sapling that he planted as a child that is now a large tree. We also went to the old family business that made crab traps and minnow buckets, where Msgr. Lane worked as a teen. The business still makes items inspired by his father’s patents. Pictured (top row, center)is Msgr. Lane next to the press he used as a teen working at the shop.

During our trip, we went to many impressive churches in the rural valley, and one church that Msgr. Lane wanted Fr. Jason and me to see in particular. It was the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory just outside of Buffalo, N.Y. This church is known as the Our Lady of Victory National Shrine. If you like touring beautiful churches, especially one with a great story,

this church needs to be on your bucket list. I think it is the most beautiful church I have ever seen.

While we saw some incredible man-made wonders in the impressive collection of churches we saw, we also saw some incredible natural wonders as we visited Letchworth State Park. The park has an impressive canyon with three falls. One of the falls is 107 feet tall—another must-see if you are in the vicinity.

Other attractions we visited included the Genesee Brew-ery in Rochester, Schwabl’s Restaurant and a “used church store.” This store had a most incredible collection of church goods for sale. While most of the items were out of my price range, I did manage to find one item that I liked that was at a reasonable price. Believe it or not, just five days prior to us being at this store, singer-songwriters Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were at the store looking to buy statues for their private chapel.

What a great vacation and adventure we had!

Special Thanks For the past nine years, I have been pastor of St. Cecilia. It is amazing the growth and the change in the parish during that time. The change I think is the most recognizable is the youth movement that has occurred in and around the parish. Quite often visitors, parishioners, family and friends comment to me how encouraging it is to see all the young adults and young families in our church. It is a fact that now the bulk of our parishioners are ages 22-36.

With the influx of young people in the parish, a Young Adult Group was formed about 10 years ago. The person that volunteered to form this group was Janelle Allen. Janelle has been a parishioner since 2007. Janelle said the reason she came to this parish was because of Fr. Elmer Smith. Fr. Elmer, Janelle said, was just so sweet

and kind that she could not help wanting to be a part of the parish. As a part of the parish, Janelle inspired other young people to get involved in the parish. Janelle not only formed and ran the Young Adult Group, but she is also in the choir and cleans the church with a few volunteers on Saturdays, among other things.

With the growing number of young people coming to the parish, it has become evident that the young adult population is now in need of a full-time staff person to expressly minister to them. On behalf of the whole parish of St. Cecilia, I want to thank the leader of our Young Adult Group, Janelle Allen, for her 10 years of volunteer service in directing that group. We have indeed been blessed that Janelle was the coordinator of the Young Adult Group as long as she was, despite her incredibly busy schedule. Thank you, Janelle!

Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy CommunionTraining for those who are interested in becoming a lector (a once-a-month commitment) and/or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion (a twice-a-month commitment) will be held Thursday, August 17, at 6 PM in the church. For more information contact Dave Rosselot at

[email protected] or 396-6022.

Honoring FatimaIn remembrance of the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions to the now saints Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, we will meet at the outdoor shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on the eastern side of St. Cecilia Church to pray a rosary at 7 PM on the 13th day of every month through October. This Sunday, August 13, is the next opportunity to join us. One rosary will be recited along with hymns to our Lady.
