M A Y 2 4 , 2 0 2 0 The Ascension

Forty days after the Resurrection marks the day we commemorate the Ascension of Christ into heaven. At the Ascension, the Lord Jesus

ascended body and soul into heaven. The Lord Jesus gave the Apostles and disciples His final instructions, and promised to be with them

and us until the end of time: “I will be with you always to the close of the age.” It is comforting to know that Jesus’ final words are that he

will not abandon us. It is good for us to take solace in that in this day and age as we work to bring some normality to our lives as we weather

the impacts of COVID-19.

As of this Sunday, it has been over 60 days since we were told by the governor to stay at home. My hope is that we will ascend out of our

homes and feel safe to be in our churches soon. I know that some of you do not feel it is safe at this point to return to church even though

the “green light” has been given to those who are well and feel comfortable coming to Mass. For those who do not, please stay home and

know that you have been dispensed by the Archbishop from going to Mass. Know that you have the option of spiritual communion by

watching the live-streamed Masses that will continue or of attending a daily Mass. My hope is that all the churches will be able to offer

live-streamed Masses so that everyone can be a part of their respective parish family at their own particular church, especially on the

weekend. I know that your parish family is of great value to you and you miss them. I want to make it possible, even if it is on a screen, for

you to be with your family.

The region’s first Mass the public can attend is Monday, Memorial Day, at 9AM at St. Cecilia only. All are welcome. Beginning Tues-

day, all the churches will be open for their normal daily and weekend schedules. Please bring your mask and know that there will be ushers

at the parishes to help you safely distance yourself from others.

Amen? Amen!

Catholic Social Teaching: What is its History? This series presented by Monsignor Frank Lane and live streamed from St. Cecilia continues this Tuesday evening at 7 PM on the St. Cecilia You-Tube channel as well as the next Tuesday evening, ending on June 2.

Monsignor will create a Scriptural context for the understanding of the responsibility of believers to worship God, look after each other and attend to the real needs of the people around them. We will move from Scripture into the experience of the Church in the early days and its expansion into a universal presence within the confines of the Old Roman Empire and, eventually, beyond. We will follow the Church into the experience of the rise of cities and reemergence of trade and mercantile life in the West. The series will conclude with an examina-tion of the emergence of Capitalism into the 16th Century and how ideas of social justice adapted to the newer challenges.

On Monday we will resume public Masses. We will keep our regular daily and weekend Mass schedule. If we need to add Masses, we will do that incrementally, as need arises. Please know that each church in the region has a certain seating capacity that we must respect for the safety of all people. Since you are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on the weekends, you might consider returning to Mass on a weekday instead of Sunday. There will not be any Communion services until further notice. Please wear your mask if you attend church.

1 | ORDINATION. Three priests were ordained for the archdiocese of Cincinnati. One, of course, was our region’s own Chris Komoroski. Chris is the son of Eva and Rich Komoroski. Chris was ordained along with two other men at a near-empty cathedral last Saturday, obviously because of the virus. But many of us were with him via livestream and in prayer. Congratulations, Fr. Chris!

2 | NEW LIGHTING. More improvements have been made to our regional facilities during the COVID-19 hiatus. At St. Cecilia some of the downtime has been utilized to replace lighting in the sanctuary and other focal points in the church.

3 | THIS WAY TO CATHOLIC CHURCH! After much groundwork done by the St. Anthony Building and Grounds team, street signs pointing out the church were installed two weeks ago. These are located on various busy thoroughfares in Madisonville. St. Anthony is the most hidden of the region’s churches. My hope is that this will be especially helpful in letting those new to the area know that there is a Catholic church nearby that they can attend.

CATHOLIC FAQS : W H AT IS THE SA N DA MI A NO CRUCIFI XThe San Damiano Crucifix is believed to have been created during the twelfth century in Umbria. According to legend, St. Francis prayed before a crucifix of this type in the chapel of San Damiano. Because of its connection with St. Francis, the San Damiano Crucifix is often seen in churches and residences associated with the Franciscan Order. This icon crucifix contains a figure of Christ and pictures related to His Crucifixion.

Those pictures include:• Mary, the Mother of Christ• Joseph, the husband of Mary• Mary Magdalene• Mary, the mother of James• The centurion who declared his faith in Jesus• The Roman soldier who pierced Jesus’ side• The soldier who offered Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar• A small rooster (symbol of St. Peter’s denial of Jesus)• Jesus ascending to God the Father

The crossbar directly behind the figure of Christ represents the empty tomb. Angels at either end guard the empty tomb, and surprised apostles stand before it.

God speaks in whispers and we live in a loud world. Hearing God’s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. But He is always there to guide and help us, and He has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer at 421.3131, ext. 2890.

Visitation GuildSt. Cecilia Parish has formed the Visitation Guild whose mis-sion is to bring Holy Communion to those unable to receive it at church. If you know of any parishioners who are unable to attend Mass and would like to receive Holy Communion, please contact Barbara Browarsky at 871-5757. We will then be able to distribute Communion to you in your home.

Lay Studies at the SeminaryMount Saint Mary’s School of Theology offers lay Catholics the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge and skills. Weeknight, daytime and Saturday classes in theology, scripture, history and pastoral studies let you maintain family, work and community commitments while answering the call to deeper discipleship. Take a class for credit, audit or work toward a degree or certificate. Interviews by phone or Zoom are available now for fall semester classes. Locations include the main campus in Cincinnati and St. Christopher in Vandalia. Call 513-231-1200 for information or to set up a virtual meeting.

Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at [email protected]. All inquiries are kept in strict

confidence.

The feast of Pentecost, which will be celebrated next weekend, May 30-31, is often called the birthday of the Church. Why? Because it was on this day, after the Holy Spirit had descended on the apostles as tongues of fire, that the apostles began preaching Jesus’ mes-sage to others. To help celebrate this special feast, we invite you to wear red no matter where you may be. The red symbolizes love of the Holy Spirit that came down as tongues of fire upon the apostles on that special Pentecost nearly two thousand years ago.
