Epiphany of the LordThis Sunday, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. This day is celebrated around the world as the day of the visitation of the Magi—a day when Jesus is revealed as our Savior. What an incredible revelation to the Gentiles to find out that Our Divine Lord was born.

On Monday, we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, the day the Holy Spirit came down from heaven on the day of Jesus’ glorious baptism. He was proclaimed the beloved Son of the Father. This was our Lord’s second manifestation or epiphany.

These feasts conclude the Christmas Season, but let us work to keep the joy of the season in our hearts and in our lives.

Amen? Amen!

RCIA THIS WEEKPlease pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church!

This week’s (January 10) RCIA lesson is the Eucharist. It has been said that the Eucharist is not a “what,” but a “who.” At the very center of the Catholic faith is the belief that the Eucharist is not merely a symbol of Jesus or a reminder of Jesus. No, the Eucharist is much more

than that. At Mass, the bread and wine on the altar are actually changed into the very Body and Blood of Jesus. When we receive the Eucharist, therefore, we are united with Jesus himself in the most intimate way possible here on earth. God is within us, within our very souls, each time we attend Mass and receive communion.

Questions for the week: What does the word Eucharist mean? What does it mean to be a Eucharistic people? What does the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist mean? Do you authentically believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist and not just present “symbolically”?

To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Living the Faith, Session 2.

Each month, Pope Francis asks Catholics to pray for special intentions. For January, we pray that Christians, and other religious

minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom.

E A S T S I D E F A I T H

Credo (I Believe)What is the right way to honor the Lord present in the bread and wine?

Because God is truly present in the consecrated species of bread and wine, we must preserve the sacred gifts with the

greatest reverence and worship our Lord and Redeemer in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

If there are consecrated hosts left over after the celebration of Holy Eucharist, they are kept in sacred vessels in the

tabernacle. Since the Most Blessed Sacrament is present in them, the tabernacle is one of the most venerable places in

every church. We genuflect before any tabernacle. Certainly, anyone who is really following Christ will recognize him in

the poorest of the poor and serve him in them. But he will also find time to spend in adoration before the tabernacle and

offer his love to our Eucharistic Lord.

A Gospel Reflection

by Father Jason Williams

MATTHEW 2:1-12

“We saw his star at it rising and have come to do him homage.”

The magi prostrate themselves before the child Jesus. In their wisdom they believe that the newborn King of the Jews, the Messiah, is before them in a simple home in Bethlehem. He appears like an ordinary baby, and yet they humble them-selves before him and lavish gifts upon him.

God made these men aware of something great, the presence of his Son among men, by means of the light of a star, fixed in the sky over his dwelling. Today God makes us aware of his Son’s presence by means of the light of the red sanctuary lamp; Jesus, God’s Son, still dwells among us in the silence of the tabernacle. The Eucharist appears like ordinary bread, and yet we humble ourselves before Jesus when we adore and worship, knowing in faith that our Lord and Savior is truly present. We are celebrating God’s gift of his Son, the gift of Love poured out even unto death so that death might no longer hold us captive. Love leads us to eternal life! How can we not help but offer our gifts to God when we come into his Eucharistic presence as we enter the church, during the Mass, and when we spend time in adoration? We may not have gold, frankincense, or myrrh, but our love for God and others, our faithfulness to Christ’s teachings handed on to us through his Church, and our sacrifices to overcome sin and temptation in our lives are just as precious in God’s sight.

Confession is available every weekday at St. Cecilia following the 9 AM Mass. “Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession;

in confession there is a chance for mercy.” - St. Isidore of Seville

CHRISTMAS: I got a lot of positive feedback about our Christmas Masses (photo 1). Special thanks to our choir and Worship Commission for orchestrating such tremendous liturgies. The result of consistently good liturgies is excellent attendance. We had 612 people at 3PM, 450 people at 5PM, 360 at midnight, and 300 people at 10AM. The total attendance for Christmas Masses was 1,722. 1 MIDNIGHT MASS: The Christmas midnight Mass is one of the most beautiful liturgies we have all year (photo 2). Not only were there a full choir and four priests in attendance, but the Mass was done mostly in candlelight. Special thanks goes to Adam Frazier

who put in the extra time and energy to create this very beautiful environment. 1 CHRISTMAS DINNER: Special thanks to all who made the Christmas dinner (photo 3) a reality once again this year. This year was special because our longtime chairman of the Christmas dinner, Pat Kearney, stepped down, and there seemed to be no replacement for him until three weeks ago when Julie Gerwe and Peggy Lane stepped up in the nick of time to salvage the dinner. The dinner was well attended despite only having three weeks to get the word out. Again special thanks to our new chairs of the Christmas dinner, Julie and Peggy, as well as Pat Kearney, who mentored them to success. 1 LAS POSADAS CELEBRATION: At our Spanish Mass on Sunday, December 17, we had a special Hispanic celebration in the anticipation of the birth of Christ. A reception followed the Mass that included Hispanic food and treats, as well as pinatas for the kids (photo 4). Over 200 people were in attendance. 1 SANCTUARY FLOOR UNCOVERED: In anticipation of installing a new floor for the sanctuary, which will start in January, we have begun to assess the original flooring. So far we have uncovered the flooring and the steps to the Saints Joseph and Mary altars. We also uncovered the main altar steps (photo 5). I think I am sold on using the original steps. They look fantastic. First-hand testimony of the appearance of the floor 15 years ago paints a bleak picture of the damage done when the new altar was placed in the church 50 years ago. Time will tell how much of the original floor is salvageable. 1 WELCOME, CHILD OF GOD: On Dec. 23, we cele-brated the baptism of one of our parishioners. Please welcome Pietro Francesco, son of Peter and Jenny Manto (photo 6).
