CD of the Month Join us as we continue with our parish ‘CD of the Month’ program. For the month of May all parishioners are wel‐come and encouraged to purchase and listen to "The Body and Blood of Christ" by Dr. Scott Hahn. This audio CD is a great talk by a world class speaker. Dr. Hahn does an amazing job of explaining the deepest mysteries of our faith in a way that all people can understand and relate to. This is a simple opportunity to listen, learn, and share our faith together as a community. On Thursday, May 26th, our ‘Formation Night’ will be dedi‐cated to a discussion and sharing on this CD. All people are welcome to attend. CDs are available after Mass or by contacting the parish office. CDs are $3 each.

ST. MATTHIAS, Apostle May 14

My dear parishioners, Today is the Seventh Sunday of Easter as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. In the lection from Acts of the Apostles we read: “Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of

God…” The Protomartyr Stephen, like some other saints, was blessed to catch a glimpse of heaven while still here on earth. Having the awesome opportunity to view heaven and the liturgy which is taking place there is indeed life-giving. Every time we come into our church we are blessed that we are able to participate in the liturgy which makes God present in our midst. Even though they are invisible to the naked eye, thousands of angels are present with us and joining with us in praising God. With the eyes of faith we can see that our place of worship is sacred, the temple of God. I would like to announce that we will begin a parish campaign to raise money to renovate our church. The renovation I speak of will consist of the following: painting the church, refurbishing the church floors, refurbishing the exterior church doors and purchasing new sanctuary furniture. I will be updating you on this project each week and seeking your support. I am confi-dent that our parishioners will rise to this occasion because of the pride we have in our parish. This pride is not arrogance but rather a love for Saint Cecilia’s which is shown in generous support as we care for our property. I am happy to inform you that we already have $25,000 which has been donated for this project from various parishioners. These donations came after I had spoken with some parishioners regarding this project. They eagerly gave me their donations when they heard that work would be done on our church. This positive response has greatly encouraged me to begin now in raising funds for this project. I have contacted Ever Greene Architectural Arts, Inc. located in Manhattan to present proposals for the church painting and Vic-tor Zucchi and Son Company located in Bogota as the general contractor. Both companies are doing the restoration work on our cathedral located in Paterson and specialize in ecclesial architectural work. The work in our church will begin shortly and will be done in phases. On MOTHERS DAY we remember our mother who has given us life and nurturing. So too, our MOTHER THE CHURCH has given us new life in Christ through Baptism and continually nurtures us through the sacra-ments. As we show love and care for our mothers we also show love and care for our church, our spiritual mother. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to the mothers of our parish! May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, be your help and inspiration. Christ is Risen! Father Zig

580-St. Cecilia

From the Acts of the Apostles we learn that St. Matthias had been one of the companions of our Savior from the day of His baptism by St. John; for when there was question of electing an Apostle to take the place of the apostate Judas, St. Peter spoke: “Of these men who have been in our company all the time that the Lord Jesus moved among us, from John’s baptism until the day that He was taken up from us, one must become a witness with us of His Resurrec-tion” (Acts 1:21) Two men were proposed: Barsabbas and Matthias, and the latter was chosen by lot. About one hundred and twenty persons were present this this election. According to an ancient tradition handed down by Clement of Alexandria and confirmed by Eusebius and St. Jerome, St. Matthias was one of the seventy-two disciples of our Lord. It was after this occurrence that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, among who St. Matthias was then numbered. Clement of Alexandria writes that St. Matthias was remarkable for inculcating the necessity of mortifying the flesh with its irregular pas-sions and desires. According to the Greeks, St. Matthias suffered martyrdom in Colchis, which is called Ethiopia. Colchis was a district of Asia Minor, situated on the shores of the Black Sea, south of the Caucasus Mountains. PRAYER: Lord God, You chose St. Matthias to be an apostle replacing Judas. Through his intervention may we enjoy the reward of Your love and be numbered among the elect. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
