Sea Cloud · Sea Cloud ii
Sailing around the Canary Islands
November 2016
SET SAIL AND EXTEND YOUR SUMMER
In November, the sun takes its leave and
heads off on a winter break of its own ...
but that will not sour the mood on board
our two windjammers. The Sea Cloud
and the Sea Cloud ii have adventure
in their sights, hoisting their sails and
setting a course for the Canaries. And
the timing could not be more perfect:
at this time of year, this Atlantic archi-
pelago makes for a spectacular spot for
sailing. With constant trade winds and
mild temperatures between 22 and 24
degrees, it promises prime conditions
for our two elegant yachts.
Two cruises, two main focuses
Each person expects something different
from their windjammer experience. This
is why our two sailing holidays through
the Canary Islands are based around two
different themes. On the Sea Cloud
ii, the focus is not just on sailing, but
experiencing the local scenery, people,
nature and culture. You can discover the
islands‘ diversity during an organised
excursion or individually at your own
pace. On the Sea Cloud, our cruise
has no fixed itinerary: we let the wind
set the course for our legendary wind-
jammer, allowing sailing to truly become
the heart of the journey. Prepare yourself
for the unexpected, no matter where the
elements take us. The Sea Cloud will
then drop anchor in a port each evening,
with each morning promising exciting
new sailing adventures.

THE DIVERSITY OF THE CANARIES
Stunning scenery and a laid-back tempo
On the three smaller and westernmost
Canary Islands – El Hierro, La Palma and
La Gomera – time passes more slowly.
Holidaymakers come here to learn a thing
or two about sedate living from the local
inhabitants and to enjoy a fully relaxing
break in the midst of breathtaking nature.
With the exception of a few barren
mountain regions, these three volcanic
islands are covered in lush green
vegetation. La Gomera‘s pride and joy is
the Garajonay National Park with its
misty tropical forest. Thanks to their
unique natural landscapes, La Palma
and El Hierro have both been declared
biosphere reserves by UNESCO.
The “Islands of Eternal Spring” may
all share the same pleasant climate,
but each one impresses with its own
inimitable beauty. Gran Canaria and
Tenerife offer up vast beaches and a
vibrant city life, whilst on El Hierro,
La Palma and La Gomera you can
experience the serenity of Mother
Nature. With fine sand dunes, such
as those found on Fuerteventura, and
the peculiar lava-sculpted landscapes of
Lanzarote, the sunny Canary archipelago
is one of the planet‘s most intriguing
destinations, offering an abundance of
unique scenery and culture.
Enjoy relaxing beaches and bustling towns
Gran Canaria and Tenerife are the two
most populous Canary Islands, which
comes as no surprise given that for nearly
150 years tourists have been flocking to
these two destinations to enjoy their long
sandy beaches and mild climate. Today,
the islands‘ capital cities are mainly
renowned for their lively atmosphere and
varied nightlife. But away from the tourist
hotspots, small coastal and mountain
villages still offer a slice of authentic
Canary life.

Sail wherever the wind takes you
On this trip our legendary tall ship will show you exactly what it was born to do, with nothing but the wind deter-mining its course and the captain obeying its orders. Just how many knots can the Sea Cloud get up to? At how many ports will it call? The answers will emerge – new at every hour and on each of the six days at sea.
Just one goal: relaxation
For seven whole days you can enjoy your trip without any organised stops, schedules, or timetables. The freedom beneath the sails knows no bounds; here you will find the perfect place to relax. Time passes slowly as you
effortlessly unwind and relaxation takes hold.
Also on board: circumnavigatorBurghard Pieske
Burghard Pieske may have studied geography and education, but he is also a qualified ship’s captain. Since spending ten years sailing around the world, his main focus has been recreating reallife historic sailing ad-
ventures. He is an author, adventurer and freelancer for ‘Yacht’ magazine. Depending upon the circumstances, it is possible that another lecturer will be on board
for this trip.

Sail with the trade winds through the ever-changing island landscape of the Canaries: Las Palmas – Las Palmas
Many magnificent hours at sea
In late autumn the reliable trade winds and the Canaries’ mild climate ensure ideal sailing conditions. The day is yours to relish the wonderful windjammer experience however you please. And when the Sea Cloud ii drops anchor in the afternoon or early evening, there will still be plenty of time to explore the surrounding area.
The diversity of the Canary Islands
Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera – during this cruise you will discover the two bigger and three smaller Canary Islands. Walking along the promenades, through narrow alleyways or alongsi-de the sea, you will experience the diverse character of these islands: from cosmopolitan style in Las Palmas to quiet introspection in rustic San Sebastián.
Nature at its best: the Garajonay andCaldera de Taburiente national parks
Magical trade mists, gnarled pine trees, babbling head streams – when the Garajonay and Caldera de Taburiente national parks were created, the Canary Islands guaranteed protection for two of its most out-standing ecosystems. Whilst Garajonay’s misty evergreen forest boasts over 1,000 animal species, Caldera de Taburiente impresses with an enormous, rugged volcanic crater.
Also on board: Dr Constantin Elfe
Dr Elfe is a passionate sailor who studied history and politics, as well as American Studies, and who works for the German parliament. He has been accompanying our cruises as a lecturer for many years. His talks
cover a wide range of topics.Depending upon the circumstances, it is possible that another lecturer will be on board
for this trip.
