At the recent Telkom PGA championships Telkom Business and the PGA of SA joined forces to give

school children the opportunity to experience golf in a fun and exciting way.

Children from schools across Gauteng were invited to participate in a Grow Golf Zone which includeda Long Term Athlete Development Cyclone, Instruction nets and mini golf course.

The Cyclone encapsulates the LTAD philosophy where children have fun, improve their “physical lit-eracy” and learn the basics of golf. Children in small groups traverse a circuit of golf specific and moregeneral physical literacy exercises that teach the various skills needed for the game.

A PGA pro and trainee from the Golf School of Excellence supervised each group on the Cyclone, andkids enjoyed a free giveaway pack in a safe area. There was a jumping castle and live broadcasts fromRadio Jacaranda added to the vibe.

Children also went down to the course and saw the big boys in action.

Many teachers attended with their parents and there was in information centre promoting the Level 1course and the Grow Golf Coaches Association.

The PGA has recognized the need for Level 1 coaches to introduce children to golf at schools. A Level1 course has been created that teaches junior coaches how to coach golf in a way that is both userfriendly, makes golf fun for kids and gives kids maximum benefit.

The Grow Golf Coaches Association has been created to provide Level 1 qualified coaches with re-sources, support and a structured communication system to facilitate schools interaction . Level 1 cer-tification goes hand in hand with membership of the GGCA.

Dear Editor

Watching left handed Bubba Watson win theMasters reminded me of what initially sparked mylove for the game of golf. For it was many, manyyears ago when that I happened to watch the Mas-ters on TV.I was 9 years old and no one in myfamily played golf but my dad watched all sports.I had been playing outside that day (probablycricket or rugby) and when I came in that after-noon my dad had fallen asleep in his chair watch-ing the Masters. I sat down and started watchingthese chaps hit a little white ball what seemed likea mile compared to a cricket ball! For whateverreason I knew right then I had to play this game.I had found a golf ball in an open veld where wenormally played. A neighbour use to hit balls thereso we would find one every once in awhile. Beforethat fateful day that I watched the Masters a golfball was just a funny looking ball that we wouldbounce really high on the road.

I needed a club so I took a block of wood about20 cm long and a old croquet handle and

mounted them together, got out the lawnmowerand cut a small area a little shorter than the restof the garden and put in a tin can. I came up witha couple different tee areas from all over the gar-den and I played to that hole all year long. Everywaking moment I would be out there playing myversion of golf! Initially my parents thought thiswas a fad that I would get tired of but as that yearwent by I spent more and more time at it. I foundout years later that my mother had eventuallygone to my father and told him "you have to getthat child a set of golf clubs because this is morethan just a passing phase". My dad found a usedset in the local newspaper and the following sum-mer he got me my first junior membership. Threeyears later my father and younger brother startedplaying and we obtained a family membership.

Golf has been a part of my life and my entire fam-ily’s lives ever since that fateful Masters Sunday in1975 when Jack Nicklaus took the green jacket.

Kind regards

Mungo West

Dear Mungo

Watching the Masters is certainly an inspiration and I am sure that many youngsters around theworld would have had their imaginations sparked whilst taking in this year’s event, particularly

as Louis and Bubba battled it out in the play off. It is also of great importance to have yourparents support and encouragement as yes children do go through many fads but there is al-

ways one that really grabs a hold of them and that needs to be identified and nurtured.

Thank you for you letter and may golf continue to be a part of your life for many moreyears to come.

Regards

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500

Land dispute threatensOlympic golf course

SAO PAULO – A land dispute is threateningconstruction of the golf course for the 2016Summer Games, when the sport is to beplayed at the Olympics for the first time since1904.

City officials might have to find a new site, meaning the project would start from scratchand possibly not be ready on time for test eventsin 2015. The city said in response to The Asso-ciated Press that it recently became aware of thesituation and is "evaluating the measures it willtake."

Local organizers had considered using existinggolf courses in Rio, but eventually decided tobuild a new one because the renovation projectswould likely be too complex and expensive. TheRio 2016 committee wants the venue to becomea legacy to the city and serve as a tool for better-ing youngsters through sports. It will be used asa public facility after the 2016 Games.

While many golf courses are already moving towards a greener culture, not may have formalised their intent.

EMS helps golf clubs to establish guidelines. Based on the ISO circle of quality, the software allowsyou to; formulate objectives, define tasks, document responsibilities, evaluate the progress and reporton these objectives. This creates a collection of data for easy auditing and certification by companieslike ISO 14001, GEO, Audubon. Certification is important as today’s golfer is more environmen-

tally aware and the golf tourist is also an eco tourist.

EMS also provides a platform to communicate information professionally via a link on your websitethat takes your visitor directly to EMS. Here visitors are informed on flora, fauna and newsworthyitems about your golf course. They can follow progress on specific projects like the removal of alien

species, the re-establishment of biodiversity or a grey water project.

Southern Right WhalesThese stately creatures are extremely intelligent,

graceful and majestic. For eons they have travelled the seas singing their whale songs anddanced to the beat of the waves. Mothers formclose relationships with their young, who start

suckling from birth until about one year of age.As mammals, they are born with a fine

sprinkling of hair which through the yearsmostly disappear.

Whaling started in Norway, some 5000 yearsago, with the Southern Right Whales making

easy targets by ruthless hunters. These beautifulanimals are slow swimmers and float when

killed, thus making them the “Right Whale” tohunt. Even though commercial whaling hasbeen banned for more than 20 years, peoplecontinue to fire harpoons into these gentle

creatures, causing many species to be endangered. The Southern Right Whale is

conservation dependent with about 3000 in the sea to date.

LIFESPAN

The lifespan of the Southern Right whale is estimated to be 90 - 100 years.

REPRODUCTION

The gestation period is about 12 months andthe calf is born tail first. The newborn is helpedto the surface of the ocean by its mother to take

its first breath, and after thirty minutes haslearned to swim. The calf and mother spend the

first year together, with the baby living off itsmother's milk. Whales breed in warmer waters

and females usually have one calf every 1-3 years.

BREACHING

When a whale leaps out of the water, sometimestwirling around, it is called breaching. This action may be done purely for play, or may be used to loosen skin parasites and other

irritations the whale might have. Breaching isalso believed to be a means of communicationwith other whales and is usually done in sets

of between four and six.

Golf TravelInsights 2012

IntroductionGolf tourism, in its own right, has developed into a successful business, and there are nu-

merous tour operators tailoring their offers to the specific needs of golfers all over the

world. Whether as a primary motivation for a holiday or simply as a secondary activity,

golf attracts millions of holidaymakers worldwide. According to IAGTO1, international

golf tourism exceeded 50 million travelers in 2011.

Golf tourists purchase many different goods and services while on their trip, supporting a wide rangeof businesses such as hotels, restaurants, retailers and, of course, golf facilities themselves through thepurchase of green fees, golf equipment and cart rental. IAGTO estimates golfers’ spend to be 120%more than that of other travelers’.

While golf tourism demand still lags behind the volume of pre-crisis years, we were pleased to note thatthe number of golf tourists was on the increase in 2011 and there are several emerging golf destinationsin the market. Nearly three-quarters of the tour operators surveyed are also positive about the future.

In order to provide a reflection of golf tourism trends in today’s challenging economic environment,KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice has undertaken the Golf Travel Insights survey among internationalgolf tour operators for the third time in early 2012. Continued on p38

Golf bookings in 2011Golf bookings indicate a positive trend in market de-mand as 60% of the surveyed golf tour operators haveexperienced an increase in the number of golf trips2in 2011, compared to only 38% in our survey lastyear. A similarly encouraging sign is that fewer opera-tors reported a decrease in bookings: 12% versus 54%in the year 2010.

More than half of golf tourists booked 4-7 night tripsin 2011, while a quarter booked short trips of 1-3nights and 20% stayed for longer than a week. Thisdistribution was similar in previous years, indicatinglittle change in the average length of stay.

About 35% of all bookings were group bookings in2011, typically by groups of 8-12.

Most popular destinationsThe most popular destinations in 2011 continued to beSpain and Portugal, together with the UK and Ireland, while emerging destinations like Thailand, Vietnam andTurkey are also enjoying an increasing interest. Italy andBulgaria are also considered as emerging golf tourismhot spots by many operators.

North African destinations (including Egypt, Tunisiaand to some extent Morocco) were hit hard in 2011 bythe Arabic uprising in terms of inbound golf tourism. On the other hand, golf markets of Mediterranean Eu-rope (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Turkey) couldbenefit slightly from the Arabic unrest by taking oversome of the golf tourism demand.

The United States traditionally has a very strong do-mestic golf tourism market, while Argentina and theDominican Republic have become more and morepopular outbound tourism destinations for US citizens.

Golf tourists and their expectationsThe biggest golf travelers remain the Americans, theCanadians and the Brits, followed by the Scandina-vians (mainly Swedish) and the Germans.

While golf tourists care most about the quality of thegolf courses at a destination, they are becoming moreand more price sensitive.

Accessibility remains a key factor, and particularly the availability of direct flights to a golf destinationplays an important role.

In regard to playing activities, a golf tourist generally plays 4-6 rounds of golf on 3-5 different courseson a one-week golf holiday.

PricingBased on our survey, a 1-3 night golf trip, includingaccommodation and green fee but excluding flight, costs between EUR 300 and 600, depending on thedestination. A 4-7 night trip typically costs EUR600-900, while those who travel for longer than aweek should budget over EUR 1,500, with someluxury golf trips costing as much as EUR 5,000.

Thirty-nine percent of golf tour operators haverecorded an increase in package price, while the ma-jority kept prices stable in 2011. Changes in pricing, however, also depend on which destinations they or-ganize trips to. For instance, prices of golf trips inthe markets of South-East Asia (e.g. Thailand andVietnam) have increased significantly (30-50%),and have also gone up in Turkey by 10-20%. Onthe other hand, a 10-20% price decrease was expe-rienced in Spain and Portugal.

Booking methodsAccording to travel agents who participatedin our survey, most bookings are made overthe phone or by email/Internet, with golfersseeking personal contact with the agents inorder to get information and advice. As golftrips are typically tailored to the tourists’needs, many do not find standardized In-ternet platforms a viable way of bookinggolf trips.

Over half of the trips are booked 1-6months prior to the travel date, while 25%are booked more than six months in ad-vance (typically group bookings). Aboutone fifth of the bookings are made withinone month of the travel date.

Future outlook Similarly to last year, over two-thirds of the sur-veyed tour operators expect a slight growth in golftourism in the short to medium term, and about afifth expects stagnation. While 9% are pessimisticand predict a decrease, 4% foresee spectaculargrowth. Whether tour operators have positive ex-pectations about the future of their business alsodepends on which destinations they focus on.

According to IAGTO, golf tourism continues togrow at pace, and is soon expected to reach the levelof 2007 (before the economic downturn). Destina-tions with a strong product mix, competitive priceand appropriate promotion strategy can especiallyprosper in the coming years.

Appendix – Survey profileThis report is based on a global survey of golf touroperators, performed by KPMG’s Golf AdvisoryPractice in early 2012, reflecting the year 2011.

Ninety golf tour operators from 35 countries haveparticipated in the survey. Nearly half of the responses were received from European golf tour operators, 24% from Asia and 23% from those located in the Americas, with the remainder beingAfrica-based or from Australia and New Zealand.

The move had been prompted by the recent upsurge in use of anchored putting strokes on Tour – notjust among older players – but a final decision is yet to be made.

Any action that is taken would most probably be by amending the Rules on method of stroke ratherthan limiting putter length, with any change effective from 1 January 2016, when the next edition ofthe Rules of Golf is published.

Speaking during a press conference at Royal Lytham & St Annes, venue for this year’s Open Champi-onship, Dawson said: “The use of long and belly putters, and in particular any anchoring of the clubagainst any part of the player’s body, has been under review by The R&A and USGA for some time. The recent upsurge in use of anchored putting strokes on Tour has brought the subject into renewedfocus.

“We appreciate that this is a complex and emotive issue that divides opinion. Any decision will be madewith the best interests of the game in mind and introduced only after a lengthy period of notice.”

No specific length of time has been given for a decision to be made, with the final decision resting withthe Rules committees of The R&A and USGA.

“Mossel Bay is the Do Stuff Destination for thewhole family, and that means that there’s a wholelot of attractions activities to keep your spouse oryour kids busy if they aren’t golfers,” said MosselBay Tourism’s Marcia Holm.

She said that the town considers the natural envi-ronment its biggest attraction, but that the manyindoor attractions (like aquariums, entertainmentcentres, museums, shopping, and beauty spas) en-sure that there’s something to do even on thewettest of days. “And, by the way, that doesn’t hap-pen very often - we have more than 300 days ofsunshine a year here on this stretch of the coast.”

Which is good news for play, of course.

Ms. Holm said that Mossel Bay’s tourism industryhas begun to embrace the principles of responsibletourism - which is ‘tourism that creates betterplaces for people to live in, and better places tovisit. “We all want to leave a better world for ourchildren, and, since tourism has such a large im-pact on travellers, hosts, economies and the natu-ral environment, it’s become imperative that wepay attention to we travel and how this will impacton the future.

“Fortunately Mossel Bay offers a number of funways of exploring both the environment and ourdifferent cultures,” she said.

“These range from 5-night walking tours (the

Oystercatcher Trail and Hunter-Gatherer Trails, during which you learn about our ancient ances-tors, and how they survived - and thrived - on thispart of the coast), to the touch tanks at the DiasMuseum Complex’s Shell Museum and at OceansAquarium at The Point - where even the littlest ofthe kids begin to learn about the creatures in ourseas.

“And our cultural experiences - like Back Road Sa-fari’s Meet The People Tours - create opportunitiesfor meaningful interaction with local businesspeo-ple from across the community.

“And since responsible tourism is all about gener-ating mutual respect, engaging with one another, and reducing our impact on the world, these ac-tivities sensitise and educate - but subtly, and withreal impact.”

Ms. Holm said that the town has recently selecteda ‘Responsible Tourism Photo of The Year.’

“It was taken by Fiona Ayerst and shows her son,Finn, and his dad, Ryan Johnson, looking at asmooth-hound shark in the aquarium at The Point- and we think it tells powerful stories about re-sponsible tourism and about Mossel Bay.

“Especially, it says ‘you’re all welcome!’,” she said.

LONDON (Reuters) - Spectators will be able to use mobilephones at this year's British Open golf at Royal Lytham & StAnnes after organisers announced they were relaxing a banthey put in place in 2006.

Tournament organisers are particularly sensitive to phones ring-ing while players play their shots, leading the governing Royal &Ancient to introduce a complete ban at The Open.

However, because of the growth of smart phones and the golfingapps that go with them, it has relented.

Fans will be able to carry their phones with them on the course, although calls will have to be made in designated areas.

"There is no denying the attachment people feel to their mobilephones both in terms of gathering information and staying intouch with family and friends," R&A chief executive Peter Daw-son said in a statement on Monday.

"We understand this and allowing their use at the Championshipwill enrich The Open experience."

Dawson said fans would be able to use a range of Open apps, al-lowing them to keep tabs on scoreboards, tee times, news andvideo highlights.

"We understand there will be concerns over this change in policybut will be liaising with spectators at the Championship to ensurecalls are not taking place near play," he said.

"Our spectators are very knowledgeable and understand golf andso we are confident they will respect the players."

The Open begins on July 19.

ASGCA MembersShare Viewpoints onState-of-the-Game

At the recent Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas, several American Society of Golf Course Archi-tects (ASGCA) members shared their views onsome of the industry’s top issues. The discus-sion took place during the event’s annual“Trends in Contemporary Golf Course Archi-tecture” presentation moderated by ASGCAPresident Rick Phelps and featuring ASGCAPast President Damian Pascuzzo; Gil Hanse,ASGCA; and Jerry Lemons, ASGCA Associate.

On growing the game…

Jerry Lemons: “Everyone needs to ask, ‘Whatfirst made you fall in love with golf?’ From there, work on making golf fun for all, affordable, ac-cessible to anyone and then you are making busi-ness sense.”

Damian Pascuzzo: “Part of the attraction is thatI can play with the same equipment and on thesame courses as the very best players in theworld. I will never get together with my friendsand play baseball at Fenway Park, but I can playPebble Beach and TPC.”

On the value of golf course rankings…

Gil Hanse: “Rankings are more a popularitycontest than a true evaluation of architecture.Rankings fill magazine pages in the off season, but most people buy golf magazines for instruc-tions and features, not rankings.”

Pascuzzo: “Reading about rankings is no substi-tute for going out and seeing the great golfcourses. It’s like just reading about great worksof art instead of going out and seeing them firsthand.”

SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

• Ouderdom 16 – 65 jaar : 118 472

• Persone in diens (formele en nie-formele sektore): 46 796 (39,5%)

• Geregistreerde werkloses: 9 003 (7,6%)

• Mense wat ekonomies onaktief is: 62 673 (52,9%)

(Inligtins bron: Ilembe District Municipality quarterly economic indicators 2nd quarter 2011)

ing is ewe indrukwekkend.

In Johannesburg,

rondom Johannesburg soos byvoorbeeld Alexandra, Tembisa, Diepkloof, Soweto, ens. afkomstig

wees.

Inderdaad ’n woestynDie Prince’s Grant Kus gholflandgoed as maatskappy, voorsienvoltydse werk aan 150 individue.

• Verhoogde biodiversiteit

• Rehabilitering van sensitiewe kuswoud gebiede wat wind enweer erosie bekamp;

The PH Fuel Highveld Mid Amateur Open was played at a cold andwindy Middelburg CC on the 1st of April. 125 entries were received atthe final field trimmed to 90 – the course is in mint condition

The morning round got underway at 06h45 in really cold conditions. The leader at lunch was Graeme Watson on a fine 69 from WilliamMorkel and Robert Marr on 70. The afternoon cleared somewhat butit was still windy making the course a lot tougher and longer. In the runin for top spot Hardus Maritz put in a charge and was leader in the club-house on 142 with Marius Lourens. Graeme was struggling with his

game but hung on for level par 72 to win by a single stroke. Rowan du Preez and Henk Geldenhuys shared4th spot on 144.

Graeme Watson continued to his fine vein of form, which started at theLimpopo Mid-Amateur Open which he won at Zebula in December, with another win in the Volvo sponsored Gauteng North Mid-AmateurOpen played at Bronkhorstspruit on the 25th March.

Watson posted scores of 67 and 70, to win by 5 shots.

Henk Geldenhuys managed rounds of 69 and 73 to finish in secondplace while Gauteng North players Rod Tiley and Pieter Cooper finishedin 3rd and 4th on scores of 143 (1 under) and 144 (level) respectively.

Keelan van Wyk claimed hismaiden victory on the GlacierJunior Series when he won theCharl Schwartzel Tournament atMaccauvlei GC last month. The13-year-old Van Wyk chipped infor an eagle on the par-five 18thon his way to a one-under-par 71and a one-stroke victory overDylan Naidoo in the A Division.Kyle McClatchie finished third ona count out on one-over-par 73.

I’m very happy. This is my first bigtournament win, so it feels reallygood, said Van Wyk, who was im-pressive off his five handicap.

Naidoo seemed to have the tour-nament in his grasp with his level-par 72 before Van Wyk’s latecharge. But Naidoo was happywith his performance consideringhe wasn’t even sure he would getinto the event.

The 14-year-old golfer from Mod-derfontein GC arrived at Maccau-vlei on the morning of the18-hole tournament hoping tofind a place in the then full field. It was thanks to the non-arrival ofone of the players that he was ableto tee it up.

I think it’s so important for juniorgolf to have tournaments like thisand an idol like Charl Schwartzel. We look up to him and he’s proofthat we can follow in his footsteps, said Naidoo, who has played injunior events in America and stillbelieves the South African systemis one of the best.

I have played in events in Amer-ica, and I finished third in theOptimist International JuniorGolf Championship at the PGANational Resort & Spa in Floridalast year. But I still think our jun-ior system is easily one of the bestin the world.

The Tuks Golf Academy student started with aneight shot lead and fired a final round two-over-par73 to put the seal on a magnificent performanceand a runaway victory. Dlamini finished a full 10shots clear of Mpumalanga’s Izel Pieters, who eagledthe par-five 10th and parred the last eight holes fora 73 to sneak into second ahead of Free State ama-teur Lumien Orton and 17-year-old rising star, LaraWeinstein.

Orton, back on the circuit after a year-long lay-off,carded a 76 while Weinstein saved her best golf forthe final round and signed off on a 72.

“I am just completely overwhelmed at this mo-ment,” said a smiling Dlamini, after popping in thewinning putt under thunderous applause from herpeers surrounding the 18th green.

“This means so much to me. To lift this trophy aftertrying and coming close for three years, tells me Ican really compete. I won the Sanlam SA MatchPlay in 2009, but this victory tells me I can play, re-ally play.”

In the windy conditions over the first two rounds,Dlamini was the only player in the A-Division fieldof 105 golfers to break par. After an opening 70 andsecond round 69, she shot a 2 over par 73 for a mas-sive 10 stroke victory. Since joining the Tuks GolfAcademy at the University of Pretoria last year,Dlamini has come on in leaps and bounds.

She showed her determination when she success-fully defended her title as the University of Preto-ria's Women's Club Champion by shooting a36-hole total gross score of 125 (-19) at CenturionCC this February and underlined her growingstature with victories this year at the Eastern CapeMatch Play and Stroke Play, the North West StrokePlay and KwaZulu-Natal Match Play. Now, withher first big goal crossed off, the next item on heragenda is the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur MatchPlay coming up in July at Benoni CC.

“There are a few other tournaments that I wouldalso like to win, but I would love to win the double.

It’s been one of my goals since the beginning of theseason and that’s what I’ve been working towards.

“To own the double title will be a dream cometrue.”

Golf Tourism Exploding in AsiaGrowth sectors in tourism - domestic and inter-national - are hard to find these days. Businessand financial uncertainty, the ongoing falloutfrom Europe and America's economic woes andfaltering economic growth in key markets haveimpacted severely on many tourism sectors anddestinations around the world. With one clearexception: golf tourism to Asia.

Led by Thailand, the world's third most populargolf tourism destination behind Spain and theUnited States, golf tourism to the kingdom andsome neighbouring countries is defying acceptednorms. Golf tourism to Thailand will attract an es-timated record 600,000 inbound visitors and beworth $US2 billion this year, and future growthseems unlimited. Now, other South-East Asianand markets further afield want to cash in.

New Zealand, too, is stepping up golf tourism pro-motion. The marketing group Destination Queen-stown has begun a campaign in Asia to alert golftourists to its seven courses and spectacular otherattractions in this South Island holiday haven.

Knees &ThighsBy Jan Fourie and Roger Wessels

Correct movement and positions in the kneesand thighs are very important for the golfswing as this allows one to produce a consistentand powerful strike. Evaluating the movementof the knees and thighs can be done through theuse of video or simple driving range aids.

Strengthening the muscles that stabilize the Femurs (bone of the thigh), and learning to load the Ham-strings as stabilizers to maintain the angles of the knees (the angle made up by extending a line throughthe thigh and the lower leg) will help you maintain your height while creating a powerful coil.

The following is a great exercise to do in the comfort of yourhome. All you need is a golf club and a Thera(elastic)- band:

1. Keep your legs together and tie the elastic band tightlyaround your legs, just below the knees.

2. Then stand up and reposition your legs so that your kneesand feet are hip-width apart. Maintain this alignmentthroughout the exercise. Do not allow the thighs to rotatein and the knees to come together. Pushing out against theband will activate the stabilizer muscles in the hips.

3. Hold a golf club horizontally in front of your thighs. Pushyour hips back and lower the club straight down in front ofthe legs by bending your upper body forward from the hips.Maintain a straight spine by keeping the distance betweenyour belt and chest bone at a maximum. Don’t allow yourknees to move forward. The knees must be bent to allow yourhips to move back, but the knees stay in the same place allthe time!

4. Do 3 sets of 12, 3 times per week. If you use a weighted bar,do not do the exercise more than twice per week.

Try doing this exercise and we are confident that it will improve your stability and make a differenceto your ball striking ability.

Two common problems that are experienced with golfers include:

1. The thighs rotating in, pushing the knees towards eachother at address.

2. Moving the knees forward towards the ball or straighteningthem in the downswing; this causes a change of the anglescreated at address and this in turn sacrifices space for thehands and arms to work through.

If the above sounds familiar, it means that you may not havethe required strength and stability in your knees and thighs.Knees pushed in towards each other at address will affect yourability to coil correctly, so sacrificing rhythm and power. Al-tering your height during the swing, whether it is by the kneesbending or straightening too much during the swing, will leadto frustrating inconsistencies in your ability to strike the ballout of the centre of the clubface.

Gholf is ’n baie individ-ualistiese sport.

Toe ek n jong man was het almal by die skool gekyk na my

omdat ek gholf speel.

Play games when you train to keep it realistic on the course!

Three games, six balls.

Game 1

www.sagolftrader.co.za May/June 201282

Basics 1: Putting Grip - inthe palm of the left hand

Basics 2: Putting Grip fronton. Revearse overlap, square

in the palms & thumbs down

Get really good from three feet and

in! Find a hole that has a medium

amount of slope. Take six balls and

place them three feet from the hole

equally spaced in a circle around the

hole. Start at the easiest or straightest

one and see if you can make six out

of six! The better the quality of your

putting routine the better you will

putt! Read it from about two meters

behind the ball, align the ball along

your target line, feel your stroke and

then just let it go. You will make

them all if you can do that!

Page 83: SAGT MAY JUNE 2012

KIDS STUFF

Game 2

Learn to make more game changing putts from mid-range without

any naughty little mishaps. Take six balls and place them two feet

apart straight back along the same line. Vary the break from left to

right or up and down subtle slopes to enhance your creativity and

feel. Start at the first ball and see how low you can score. Each one

you make is a birdie, each one you two putt is a par and each one

you three putt is a bogey! Can you go six under par? You will be

amazed at the amount your ball breaks on a slight slope especially

as you move towards the last three balls or even how they slow up

or speed up, up and down slopes. Learn to just drop them into the

cup on the down hillers and roll them through the hole on up

hillers.

www.sagolftrader.co.zaMay/June 2012 83

Get your long-range putts into that three foot zone! If a green ismedium paced (around ten on the stimp-meter; ask Dad) and isrelatively flat, then if you make a stroke one foot back and one footthrough, your ball will roll about ten feet or so. Now for every footyou add into the overall stroke, say a foot and a half back and afoot and half through, your ball will roll another ten feet or so.Two feet back and through and it will finish around the 30 footmark and so on. Now if you have an up or downhiller or the greenis quicker or slower than the average green then you adjust thelength of your stroke accordingly. Once you have tuned into yourstroke lengths for the surface you are putting on, then take six ballsand start from a flag on the edge of putting green, moving back inten foot intervals from the hole and start putting back towards thehole. See if you can get six out of six into the three foot zone. Youwill say good-bye to three putts and maybe even make the odd one!Make sure you have the same smooth pace and length of stroke back and through. Also watch theball strike the middle of the putter face to get consistent distance control.

“I thought my first win was around the corner [this season]. To have three before May is literally unbe-lievable, but I’ve been playing well so I’ve been feeling like I can win and I’ve been giving myself oppor-tunities.”

The 23-year-old took his earning tally to a cool €1.05-million after a final-round 69 kept him threestrokes clear of Germany’s Nicolas Colsaerts, the only man to take even a whiff at the lead.

“I stayed really calm today,” said Grace. “I kept hitting the ball well. I missed a couple of shots the firstcouple of holes but regrouped well and made the birdies where it counts on the par fives, and just stayedwith it from there.

He struggled in Europe during 2011, but after abreakthrough win at the 2012 Joburg Open hefound the secret to success. A week later he liftedthe Volvo Golf Champions trophy, leaping tonumber one in the Race to Dubai. “I’m definitelyhere to win every week I play now,” he added.

Due credit must go to caddie to Zack Rasego, whowas on Louis Oosthuizen’s bag when he won the2010 Open Championship. Rasego, now Grace’scaddie, seems to have made the difference to theFancourt professional’s mindset.

Considering it’s only April, Grace is close to therecord-books, with three being the magic number. He is the third-youngest player ever to record threewins in a single season, and is the third SouthAfrican to do so, following in the footsteps of ErnieEls and Retief Goosen.

George Coetzee also shot 69 on Sunday and fin-ished tied fourth, a superb result for the 25-year-old.

But Grace was the man of the hour, and the lime-light was his.

GREENKEEPING

The 27-year-old fired on all cylinders on his way to the playoff, pencilingin 10 birdies to reach 15-under-par and catch a faltering Trevor Fisher andthen outdo him in a playoff.

“This is a nice win,” said Swanepoel. “Against Fisher – he’s a really goodplayer and a good guy. I feel sorry for him, but unfortunately there canonly be one winner, we can’t split it.”

While he waited in the clubhouse, Fisher was struggling to finish things, and a missed four-footer for par at the 18th left him tied with Swanepoel.

And so the playoff was set on the 18th. The first trip saw both players make pars, but on the secondFisher went left and into the trees with his tee-shot. Swanepoel made the green in regulation and puthis birdie putt just a foot past the hole. Fisher, putting for par for 15 feet, failed box the long putt, which left the Pretoria player with a tap-in for victory.

Swanepoel was still shocked by the outcome, and happily added: “I thought today one of us might getup there, but I didn’t think I was going to get into a playoff. I just decided to take it shot-by-shot, andthe result is really great.”

Bubba Watson, the idiosynchratic American left-hander, conjured a miracle shot at the second play-

off hole to beat Louis Oosthuizen and win the US Masters at Augusta National. Watson, the self-

taught maverick with the pink driver, looked to be in trouble when he hooked his tee shot into the

trees at Augusta’s 10th hole.

Although he had a decent lie, he needed a 30-metre hook to get it to the green. But nobody in golf

swerves and curves and makes the ball talk like the 33-year-old Watson, who boasts that he has never

had a lesson. "I’m pretty good at hooking," he would say later."I hit a crazy shot that I saw in my

head, and somehow I’m here in a green jacket talking to you," he told journalists afterward.

The American pulled off the shot, not only finding the green but hitting it to four metres from the

flag. Oosthuizen came up short of the green, chipped it up to five metres and missed his putt to save

par by the barest of margins. Watson had two putts to win the green jacket, and used them up. He

was embraced on the green by his mother Molly, his caddie and various friends from the tour, in-

cluding Australia’s Aaron Baddeley, and he cried openly.

He had parochial support from the crowd; he spent his college years at the University of Georgia. "It’s ablur," he said. "The last nine holes, I don’t remember anything." Playing together in the second-last pairing,Watson and Oosthuizen had finished at 10-under par for the tournament on another amazing AugustaSunday. Oosthuizen had to make a tricky putt from almost two metres on the 18th green in regulationplay to even make the play-off. Watson had missed a five-metre putt a few moments earlier for the outrightwin. They both parred the first play-off hole, the 18th on the course, with Oosthuizen’s putt for birdiegrazing the hole, so they had to move on to the 10th hole as the light faded.

Earlier Oosthuizen had produced just the fourth albatrossin Masters history to seize control of the tournament. Heholed his second shot from 230 metres at the long par-fivesecond, striking the shot purely and seeing it seap throughthe gap between the two front bunkers, reach the green andtrickle hard right and into the hole. It was the first ever twoat the second hole in a Masters tournament. There haveonly been three previous albatrosses in the tournament's78-year history - Gene Sarazen’s famous "shot heard aroundthe world" at the 15th hole in 1935, Australian Bruce Devlin’s in 1967 at the eighth hole, and Jeff Maggert’s atthe 13th in 1994.

Four players finished tied for third - the overnight leaders Phil Mickelson (72) and Peter Hanson (73),Matt Kuchar (69) and the perennial near-miss man Lee Westwood (68).

Mickelson was left to rue another meltdown - this time with a triple-bogey six on the par-three fourthhole after he blasted his tee shot into high bamboo left of the green and took two right-handed paddleshots to extract his ball. It was his second triple-bogey of the week; he took seven at the par-four 10th onThursday.

They all had their hard luck tales. Kuchar took a share of leadwhen he eagled the 15th, but hit a poor tee shot at the par-three16th and took bogey.

It is the first ever major championship win by Watson, who willbecome a new poster boy for the game. He lost a play-off at thePGA Championship two years ago, and his game is not conven-tional. But that's his attraction - he does not fit any stereotype.

Game - A competitive round ofgolf, but also a particulargolfer's style of play. Over time, golfers tend to progress throughseveral basic kinds of "game":great drives, poor approachshots and lousy putting; awfuldrives, foul approach shots andsuperb putting; perfect drives, rotten approach shots anddreadful putting; and ping-pong, bowling and croquet.

Gas - What putts left on theamateur side of the hole run outof.

Get down - A message fromgolfer to ball asking it to ceaseflying – now! Usually heardafter a ball is hit too far or of-fline; almost always utteredwith great agitation.

Get Up - The opposite of getdown, an exhortation used tourge a putt or shot to travel far-ther toward the hole. Also usedby Golfer A to urge Golfer B toregain consciousness afterGolfer A has hit Golfer B in thehead with an errant iron shot.

Gimme - A conceded putt, shortened from the phrase"Give it to me." Gimmes arethe centre of many golfing con-troversies, especially among theranks of amateurs who are al-ways looking for an opponentto concede a putt, even if theirball is off the green.

Give, give - An agreement be-tween a golfer and his opponent

to give each other their nextputt. Usually the result of twoamateurs with a shared fear ofthe short game.

Golf - The derivation of theword "golf 'from its Celtic andMiddle English roots is obscure. Some possibilities are: gil f f (anincurable madness), gylf (a no-torious liar), gullf (to beat ashrub with a short stick), golve(under; beneath; lost; blocked;submerged; stuck; obstructed),gellvo (horribly; terribly; hope-lessly; awfully), galfa (my God!;oh, no!), goal fyl (to cry; toweep) and gael f (I quit).

Golf Accessories - Gadgetswhose purchase improves play-ers' games primarily by elimi-nating bulk from their wallets, thereby reducing excessivetrouser friction and allowing asmooth hip movement in theswing.

Golf Cart - Two-wheeled bagcarrier that decreases the exer-cise value of playing 18 holes ofgolf from about the level of twosets of doubles tennis to theequivalent of an hour and a halfof shopping. With a four-wheeled electric cart, the physi-cal demands of the game can bereduced even further to aboutthe same as 10 minutes of rear-ranging sofa cushions, wateringa dozen plants or one completeloading and unloading of adishwasher.

Golf Club - 1. The basic imple-ment in golf, which consists ofalong shaft on one end of whichis the head, which is attached tothe shaft at the heel and has onone side a distinct face. 2. A so-cial organisation built around agolf course and composed of anumber of heels, a membershipcommittee head with two faces, and a long waiting list of peoplewho are going to get the shaft.

Golf Glove - An unpleasantodour worn on the hand.

Golf lawyer - A player knownfor constantly citing the rules, usually to the detriment of yourscore. This character may soundversed on the rules of the game, but he's probably trying to takeadvantage of you. If you're play-ing with a golf lawyer, carry acopy of the Rules of Golf withyou at all times.

Golfing - A pastime that givespeople cooped up in the officeall week a chance to lie andcheat outdoors.

Grip it and rip it - To forgetabout all those "swingthoughts" and take a healthy ripat the ball. This phrase becamepopular after the prodigiousswinger John Daly and his Her-culean drives, won the 1991PGA title at Crooked Stick. When asked about his style,Daly said, "I just grip it and ripit."
