This will be County High’s eighth Music Festival and we are delighted to announce
that we will be sponsored by the Saffron Walden Rotary Club. As well as financial
support for the Festival, our overall winner will have the opportunity to go
forward to the Rotary Club Young Musician District Finals. We are very much
looking forward to another great opportunity to celebrate the musical talents of
local young people and to our Winners’ Concert in the magnificent Saffron Hall.
A B O U T T H E F E S T I V A L
The Music Festival is taking place on two Sundays, 1st and 8th March, and is divided
into six sections with an adjudicator for each one. The Brass, Woodwind, Strings
and Guitar sections will take place on 1st March and with Junior and Senior Piano
and Vocal sections on 8th March. Our adjudicators are all professional musicians
who will listen to the performances and give feedback to the young musicians.
Every performer will receive written feedback and a certificate and medals will be
awarded for exceptional or very promising performances. Each instrument section
has various classes ranging from Pre-Grade 1 to advanced level and the winner of
the Challenge Cup Class (Grade 7-8) will receive a trophy. The adjudicators will
choose an overall winner from each section to go forward to the Winners’
Concert. In order to celebrate the importance of playing together, there are also
ensemble classes in all sections and the adjudicators will give feedback on these.
T H E W I N N E R S’ C O N C E R T
The Festival culminates in the Winners’ Concert, which will be held in Saffron
Hall.at 7pm on Sunday, 8th March. The six section winners will perform in a Young
Musician of the Year style final to decide the overall Festival winner. Our concert

Saffron Walden County High School is hugely excited once again to be hosting the
Saffron Walden Music Festival. SWCHS has a deserved reputation for musical
excellence. Over 320 pupils receive instrumental tuition and the school has 17
different musical ensembles. Students are also given numerous opportunities to
perform in any of the four annual concerts or as part of a more informal
lunchtime recital series. We are also extremely proud of our successful Music
Academy Programme, which continues to draw in high numbers of the most
talented musicians from across Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. In
recent years, the school’s musical reputation has also been enhanced by the
addition of Saffron Hall. The Hall and its programme has allowed our pupils to not
only perform in a world-class concert venue but also to work together with
professional musicians of the highest standard. It is in collaboration with Saffron
Hall that we have greatly enhanced singing and string playing in the school over
the last few years. In addition to this, we are proud to work in partnership with
the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Saffron Hall and Essex Music Hub to
host the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians (SCYM), a specialist Saturday school
offering high quality musical training to students aged 5 to 18.
Music is at the heart of SWCHS and the Music Festival chimes perfectly with the
ethos of the school. Not only does it provide young people with the opportunity
to compete with each other in a friendly atmosphere but it also gives them the
opportunity to learn more about themselves as performers and how to
communicate successfully to an audience. We look forward to hearing what this
year’s musicians can achieve.

S E N I O R P I A N O S E C T I O N ADJUDICATOR: JOHN YORK
Following studies in London, Paris (where he won the
International Debussy Prize) and Vienna, John York`s
career has taken him around the world, the majority of
his work being with cellist Raphael Wallfisch and York 2
piano duo.
His most recent recordings are all on Nimbus. York 2
were recently released in their unique four-hands
repertoire of 20th century `orchestral` blockbusters
including Le sacre du printemps and The Planets.
With Raphael the catalogue grows exponentially from the complete Beethoven
cycle to the works of Schnittke and James MacMillan, including world premieres,
rarely heard 19th Century works and major cello and piano masterpieces.
Before these duos became established, some 25 years ago, he had played
concertos with such orchestras as the London Mozart Players and the LPO,
founded the successful York Piano trio and Quartet and accompanied a list of
illustrious performers. He was Senior Music Head at St Paul`s Girls` School, a
position from which he retired in 2014.
He is a composer, festival adjudicator and lecturer, and has no intention of letting
up on any of these activities, even though his commitment to St Paul`s Girls`
School has come to an end. He fully intends to develop these aspects and enjoy
his grandchildren, now that he has a little more time.

Philip Sunderland was born in Norwich and
attended the Cathedral School. He studied at the
Royal Academy of Music as an undergraduate and
postgraduate and it was here that he caught the
opera bug which took him to the National Opera
Studio upon graduation from the Academy.
Philip began professional work as a repetiteur and
worked extensively for English National Opera,

English Touring Opera who took him under their wing and encouraged him to
conduct – The Marriage of Figaro was his conducting debut and he continued to
conduct several more operas for the company. Philip then moved to Leeds,
appointed as Chorus Master to Opera North where, as well as training and
managing 36 choristers, he conducted and organised concerts with the chorus

Brahms’ Requiem in York Minster. He also conducted Sweeney Todd and La
Traviata during his time with the company.
Philip now lives in Saffron Walden and continues a busy freelance career. Most
notably he recently conducted Paul Bunyan for English Touring Opera and won an
Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. He returned to the
company this year with Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann.
Philip’s second opera The Glass Knight, with a libretto by Gareth Prior, was
performed in Saffron Hall in 2016 with a cast of over 300 students and
