Mentalhealth issuesarereportedtoaffect20%ofthepopulation,with depression and anxiety among thehighest in prevalence andincident rates on the rise. The direct effects of emotional andbehavioural disorders are clearly significant and distressing forthe person, family and community.

However, the impact of mentalhealthissuestoworkplacesandemployershasbeen lessclearand received less attention to

Themagnitudeof the issueboth intermsofcostsandthedangersofmentalhealth problems to organisations shouldnotbeunderestimated:there isagreaterneed now more than ever for businessand employers to consider how to makework a safer place to be.Unlikephysicalillnessanddisease, mentalhealthdisordersaswellasmentalhealthpreventionandtreatmentprogramsreceiveless attention and resources than otherhealthconditions, largelyduetoalackofunderstandingandthestigmasurroundingmental health. Yet the results from theUSNationalComorbiditySurveyreportedthat 18% of working adults said theyhad experienced symptoms of a mentalhealth disorder in the previous month.Similarly, inastudyexaminingtheamountof money companies spent on medicalcost for employees and the cost of lostproductivityandabsenteeism, depressionranked the first most costly health con-dition for employers, and anxiety rankedfifth - with obesity, arthritis and backand neck pain in between (World HealthOrganization-WHO).

Whenitcomestoprotectingthehealthand safety of its workers, most compa-nies’ primary investments have been inengineering, PPE and policies. However, injury and incident data reveals that upto 95% of workplace incidents directlyor indirectly stem frompersonal choicesand person-based errors - two causesplainly affected by mental health disor-ders and mental stress. When 44% ofCanadians reported in the ConferenceBoardofCanada’sstudy‘BuildingHealthyWorkplaces’ that they’ve coped with amental health problem such as extremestress, substance abuse, schizophrenia, depression, burnout and addictions - butalmost 50%ofmanagers hadno trainingin managing workers with mental healthissues - it becomes clear that mentalhealth awareness, prevention and treat-ment are a business priority.

What can employees do?Itisnotuncommonforworkplacefactors, suchasbullying, burnoutorharassment, tocontributetotheonsetofmentalhealthproblems, but organisations can still domuchmore than just implementingequalemployment opportunity policies or di-versity training as their sole safeguardagainst mental health issues affectingtheir frontline. Within the spectrum ofworkerhealthandsafety,aconceptusu-allyconsideredsolelyintermsofavoidingphysical illness and injury, sits a newideainoccupationalhealth:psychologicalhealth and safety.

InanewsetofstandardsreleasedbytheCanadianCenterofOccupationalHealthandSafety,13organisationalfactorsthatimpactpsychological health and safety (termedpsychosocialriskfactors)areoutlinedinanefforttoeducateandpromotepsychologicallysafer workplaces among companies. Thepsychosocial risk factors include the wayactualwork iscarriedout, andthecontextin which work takes place (source: www.guardingmindsatwork.ca):1. Psychological support - When employ-

ees perceive organisational support, itmeans they believe their organisationvalues their contributions, is committedtoensuringtheirpsychologicalwellbeingandprovidesmeaningfulsupportsifthiswellbeing is compromised.

2. Organisational culture - The degree towhich a work environment is charac-terised by trust, honesty and fairness.

3. Clear leadership and expectations - Ef-fectiveleadershipandsupportthathelpsemployeesknowwhattheyneedtodo,howtheirworkcontributestotheorganisationandwhetherthereareimpendingchanges.

4. Civillyandrespect-Workenvironmentswhere employees are respectful andconsiderate in their interactions withone another, as well as with custom-ers, clients and the public. Civility andrespect are based on showing esteem, care and consideration for others andacknowledging their dignity.

5. Psychologicaljobfit-Agoodfitbetweenemployees’ interpersonal and emotionalcompetencies and the requirements ofthe position they hold. This means thatemployees not only possess the techni-calskillsandknowledgeforaparticularposition,but theyalsohavethepsycho-logical skills and emotional intelligenceto do the job.

6. Growth and development - Employeesreceive encouragement and support inthe development of their interpersonal, emotional and job skills.

7. Recognition and reward - Appropriateacknowledgement and appreciation ofemployees’ efforts in a fair and timelymanner.

8. Involvement and influence - Employeesare included in discussions about howtheir work is done and how importantdecisions are made.

9. Workload management - Tasks andresponsibilities can be accomplishedsuccessfully within the time available;not limited to just the amount of work, but also theextent towhichemployeeshave the resources (time, equipment, support) to do the work well.

10.Engagement-Employeesfeelconnectedto their work and are motivated to dotheir job well.

11.Balance - Recognition of the need forbalance between the demands of work, family and personal life.

12.Psychological protection - Workers feelable to put themselves on the line, askquestions, seekfeedback, reportmistakesand problems, or propose a new ideawithout fearing negative consequencesto themselves, their jobor their career.

13.Protectionofphysicalsafety-Manage-menttakesappropriateactiontoprotectthe physical safety of employees. When companies address the health

and safety of the ‘whole’ worker, that is,the physical and psychological health ofemployees, the returns on investment areimmense.Byimprovingworkerpsychologi-cal health levels, the AWB estimated thatbetween$18-32billionwouldbesavedinlostproductivityalone.Addtothisthesavingincompensationclaims,turnoverandinsurancepremiums, and the performance benefitsofdrivingacreative, engaged, cooperativeworkplace, andthebenefitofpsychologicallyhealthy workers becomes evident.

Thefutureofhealthier, saferandmoreprofitable workplaces lies in investingin appropriate training of managers tobecome better leaders, access to mentalhealth prevention and treatment services, and building a fair and just organisationalculture that cares as much for its profitsas it does its people.

Welding helmet rangeThe Miller Titanium series welding helmets are designed to provide the protection and

durability professional welders demand when working in heavy-use, high-heat industrial ap-

plications. The series is suitable for fabrication, manufacturing and construction environments.

The combination of a silver shell to reflect heat and an innovative aluminium heat shield

on the lens assists in keeping the operator cooler, contributing to reduced heat stress. The

aluminium heat shield also protects and extends the working life of the lens.

The range includes the 9400, a standard shell with external grind button and the 9400i, a lift

front design with integrated, high-impact grind shield for maximum protection and versatility. The

integrated grind shield of the 9400i provides a 180° field of view while grinding and complies with Aus-

tralian High Impact Standards. By being integrated, the grind shield improves safety and productivity by

allowing the welder to switch between welding and grinding without removing the helmet. On the 9400 model,

users can switch between weld and grind modes at the push of a button.

Both models feature: the InfoTrack arc timer, which allows the user to track arc time while welding and

includes a digital clock display with the ability to set an alarm or timer; the X-Mode function for outdoor or

out-of-position welding which can be used to eliminate false activations, sunlight interference and intermittent

sensing; intuitive digital controls with large displays that allow the welder to adjust modes, shade levels, delay

and sensitivity with ease; an auto-on/auto-off, low-amperage TIG performance, lithium battery power with solar

assist, and magnifying lenses are available in 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 magnification.

Complying with Australian Standards AS/NZS 1337.1 and AS/NZS 1338.1, the Titanium series also comes

with five outside cover lenses, two inside cover lenses and a helmet bag.

Appliance testerEmona Instruments has released the PAC3760 Plus II portable

appliance and RCD tester. Based on the PAC3760 series, it

now also includes an in-built isolation transformer which saves

costs and reduces equipment weight by eliminating the need

to purchase and carry a separate isolation transformer when

testing portable RCDs.

The tester conducts earth bond, insulation and polarity tests,

as well as leakage current tests for Class I and Class II appli-

ances and leads, and carries out trip time tests of 10 and 30 mA

portable RCDs. When used in conjunction with the optional

PAC-TPL 3 phase adaptor, the unit can also carry out three-phase

leakage testing of 10, 16, 20 and 32 A three-phase appliances.

The unit operates under mains or battery power and is

designed with simple six-button operation: Class I, Class II,

leakage, 10 mA RCD, 30 mA RCD and three-phase test buttons.

Results are displayed as a pass or fail as well as actual readings. Once the user

selects the required test, the tester conducts an automatic sequence of tests,

eliminating the need for complicated on-screen menus. Other features include

automatic sensing of IEC or extension leads which adds a polarity test to the

sequence and automatic detection of whether the appliance is switched ‘On’.

The unit is easy to use and suitable for manual testing and tagging applica-

tions requiring compliance with AS/NZS3760.

Gas analyser calibration rigThe Michell Instruments’ Portable Calibration Rig (PCR) is a mobile gas blender using premium

mass flow controllers housed in a tough transport case that can be used for a variety of ap-

plications and analysers. It can mix two or three gases from air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon

dioxide, methane and hydrogen and is easily controllable so that the perfect blend can be

achieved for the application. Provided the user has zero or spans gas cylinders available

- it is possible to ‘factory’ calibrate an analyser such as Michell’s XTP601. For example, an

analyser range 0-10% O2 in N2 could be calibrated with synthetic air and N2.

A field calibration of an analyser can be carried out in under 1 h including set-up time.

For a complete factory calibration, with multiple calibration points (to change the range/

background/both), 4 h would be all that is required. These timescales represent a

minimal downtime compared to the alternative of sending the instrument away

for calibration.

Although the unit is designed for field calibrations, it can also be used in a

laboratory to mimic changing process gases for research work.

Chest compression device

The LUCAS 2 from Physio-Control is a robust and

reliable chest compression device that delivers au-

tomated, guidelines-consistent and continuous chest

compressions, helping to maintain good circulation

to the patient during transport and throughout the

hospital. It is said to significantly improve the qual-

ity and consistency of compressions compared to

manual CPR - at the scene, during ambulance or

helicopter transportation, and in hospital emergency

or cardiac departments.

Once set up, the device can operate indefinitely

on mains power, or for up to 45 min using the

rechargeable lithium battery. The piston is driven

by an electrically powered compressor. The device

automatically compensates for the size of a patient

with no special set-up required and the rate can be

set at the ARC recommended 100 compressions/

min. Alternatively, the rate can be set for 30 com-

pressions after which the machine pauses to allow

breaths to be administered then provides another

30 compressions and so on. Compression and

decompression are timed equally, allowing for full

chest recoil. The device facilitates consistent blood

flow from the moment it is turned on.

The device can be applied quickly and provide

continuous compressions during patient transport

irrespective of the terrain. The back plate slides under

the patient’s shoulders and the main body of the

unit is clipped onto the back plate and activated.

The piston is lowered to the patient’s chest wall and

this is set as the starting point of compression. The

piston compresses the chest the recommended

five centimetres and then returns to the start position.

The suction cup on the end of the piston arm acts

to pull the chest wall up ensuring full recoil, which

in turn facilitates airflow into the lungs.

Designed to operate effectively in even the harshest

environments, the device has the additional safety

feature that if the device senses a chest compres-

sion greater than 5 cm, it will alert the operator with

an alarm and stop compressions to avoid injuring

the patient.

Fogger with atomised chemicalSpray Nozzle Engineering has launched the Lafferty 4-way, port-

able, air-operated foggers with atomised chemical. Powered solely

by compressed air which creates Venturi Action that draws a

pre-mixed chemical solution up the chemical tube into the fogger

body where it is atomised, the fogger can produce a wet, damp

or dry fog (dependent on the model).

The fog can be finetuned by adjusting the air pres-

sure and/or by regulating the solution flow with optional

metering tips.

The range of Lafferty foggers can: sanitise, deodorise,

apply insecticides, humidify, lubricate, degrease, spot

clean and apply cooling mist.

For use in large areas with multiple fogger units and/

or fogging zones, there are also pump fed operational

controllers that are used to set operating parameters such

as time delay, timed fogging and sequencing options.

A needle valve can be used to finetune fog particle

size and a stainless steel manifold allows multiple

units to be mounted inline. For safety and hygiene

purposes, a chemical check valve is also set up to

prevent drips after shutdown.

Theuseofhigh-visibility tapeon in-dustrialsafetyhelmetsiswidespreadandhelpstofurtherimprovepersonalsafety; however, it is important to

note that the correct tape and configurationmust be selected.

The working environment, hazards andlighting conditions all play a major role inthe selection process of high-visibility tapefor safety helmets. For example, employeeswhowearanindustrialsafetyhelmetinvary-ing light conditions may require an adheredtapethatishighlyvisibleduringthedayandcapable of reflecting artificial light, such asvehicle headlights, in dull or night condi-tions.(ReferencedocumentAS/NZS1801:1997clause3.2.5.)

There are a number of different safetyhelmet tapes available and they are gener-allycutandshaped intovariouskitdesigns. The recommended width of the tape shouldbeat least25mmwithanoverallareasuf-ficient to enhance personal protection. Theymust be adhered to the safety helmet in anintegralmannerandmustnot impactontheperformanceof theheadwear.

The main types of adhesive tape avail-able are:

•Retroreflective(Night)-Thesetapesarecommonlyusedwhenworkingindullornight conditionsand reflect light.

•Retro reflective/fluorescent (Day/Night)- These are combination performancetapesthatprovidehighvisualcapabilitiesduring the day and reflect light duringthenight.

It is common to see the above tapesused on safety helmets in industries suchas mining, transport, construction, forestryandoil andgas.

Having the tapes applied by the safetyhelmet manufacturer will ensure that it iscompatible,professionallyadheredandmeetanyrequiredregulatoryperformancerequire-ments. Different types of tape are availableinshapesthathavebeendesignedto:fitthecontour of safety helmet shell, avoid anyhelmet accessories that may be fitted andprovideclearvisibilityinday/nightconditions.

Safety helmets fitted with reflective tapehave the advantage of improved visibility, making it easier to see where people areworking, particularly in low light areas atnight. It is also important to regularly inspectthe tape to ensure: adhesion is maintained,no damage has occurred and the tape per-forms as it should. This inspection processalso assists with the maintenance of thesafety helmet itself. This simple inspectionshould be carried out prior to every use. DC surge protection deviceThe range of DEHNsecure DC surge protective devices protects DC applications, including LTE (4G) GSM sites. It is

available for 60, 220 and 242 VDC and fulfils the requirements in accordance with the lightning protection zones concept

including the cross-boundary DC lines as per IEC 62305-4.

The internal structure of the DEHNsecure spark gap is suited for use in DC circuits. The spark gap prevents mains

follow currents from occurring. DEHNsecure arresters are used for railway DC control circuits, emergency safety lighting,

emergency power supplies, remote radio heads (RRH), DC systems for direct supply of DC drives control circuits and

any kind of battery-operated power supply.

A modular device, the DEHNsecure product range is a coordinated lightning current arrester with a discharge

capacity of 25 kA (10/350) and a functional design. They are energy coordinated with Class II type surge ar-

resters without requiring a decoupling device or additional cable length. Their electrical parameters are rated

for the most stringent requirements in lightning and surge protection systems. The modular design of the

DEHNsecure arresters makes them safe and user friendly.

The vibration-proof-tested module locking system, for example, is said to be unique. The mechanically

coded base section and protection module prohibits installing an incorrect replacement module. DEHNsecure

arresters incorporate double terminals for connecting conductors, allowing series connection of the arresters in

a space-saving and cost-effective way according to IEC 60364-5-53 requirements. The operational status/fault

indication provides real-time information regarding the operational status of the arrester even if no operating

current is present. The DC arresters are classified as Class I type arresters according to EN 61643-11 and

IEC 61643-1/11.

Customised workstation

Optimum Handling Solution’s custom workstation

for abattoirs and food processing plants assists operators

sorting or packing products onto pallets that are over 1.5 m high.

The palletising workstations usually consist of an elevated

work platform, electric scissor lift tables and a belt top conveyor

system for carton/product removal from stillages/conveyors that

are to be packed onto pallets in the load-out areas.

Scissor lift tables can be primarily implemented within the

raised workstation, allowing the operators to pick product from the

crate/stillage/conveyor quickly and efficiently without the constant

hazard of bending and stretching related to product handling.

The common load-out conveyor system continually feeds

the finished products to the packing operator which picks and

loads products onto pallets which are raised up on Optimum’s

Palevator spring lift unit.

Vibration monitoringThe vibration sensor from ifm efector monitors, displays and records vibration values. A

display with colour change in traffic light colours shows machine conditions at a glance.

The VNB001 is the first member of a series of vibration sensors. The compact sen-

sor monitors online the overall vibration condition of machines and plants according

to ISO 10816 and features an onboard time-stamped history function as well as data

logging and trending - all directly on the machine.

The sensing principle is based on the efector octavis technology, which can also be used reliably in mobile

applications. The sensor measures the effective vibration velocity in mm/s or in/s. Measured value and switching

status are indicated on the LED display. Critical machine conditions can be signalled using two switching outputs

or one switching output and one analog input.

As an alternative, the sensor can be powered via USB interface and used as a handheld device. The product

also offers rapid and easy handling and set-up as the parameters can be adjusted directly on the device. No

additional configuration software is required.

Safety air gunThe Spray Nozzle Engineering Silvent 755-S safety air gun is claimed to reduce

noise by 73% and compressed air usage by 49% (VS open pipe @ 10 mm

diameter). The grip has been developed for applications requiring high blowing

power and working environments that demand a robust grip and valve construc-

tion. It can also be used when wearing work gloves and the grip is claimed to

be more impact resistant than conventional safety air guns.

Thumb regulation is standard on the pistol handle to provide a good ergo-

nomic grip. The handle can also be fitted with an extended trigger for hand

regulation if required.

The stainless steel nozzle features aerodynamic slots to achieve optimal use

of compressed air while minimising the sound level. The extra slot nozzle in the

centre increases air velocity and the blowing force; the air gun has a blowing force claimed to be up to

seven times stronger than ordinary air guns on the market.

Suitable for applications that require a greater concentration of force in the centre of the object to be

cleaned, it is commonly used in heavy industry, mining, power generation, foundries, paper mills and more.

Speed control for hose reelSpring rewind hose reels are commonly used in industry for hose storage.

In some hose handling applications, excessive spring rewind speed can

result from misuse and can result in significant safety issues. Excessive

rewind speed can cause rapidly moving hose to strike users or objects,

resulting in unnecessary injury or damage. The Safe-R-Reel Rewind Speed

Control System from Reel-Tech reduces the rewind speed of hose reels

in order to reduce the risks of injury, equipment damage, downtime and

hose wear associated with excessive rewind speed.

The system is specifically designed to be added to most common

brands of spring rewind reels and can be added to an existing reel without

major irreversible modifications. It is simple to install. Depending on the

reel capacity, the system simply bolts on to the hose reel canister and it

can be tuned to achieve 30-50% speed reduction compared to a standard

spring rewind reel. This can also be upgraded to vary the rewind speed.

The system doesn’t rely on hydraulic clutching or other dependent

devices requiring regular service, reducing downtime, and contains no

visible moving parts.

The system is suitable for applications in mining, food and beverage,

service vehicles industries and in workshops.

Arcing protective gloveArcing fault hazards resulting from short circuits in electrical installations can create a considerable

safety risk. Therefore, the use of tested, arcing fault-proof protective clothing is extremely important.

Arc protective gloves are an essential contribution to working safety if they: fit correctly and are not

hindering work; are tested according to EN 388 (mechanical risk) and EN 407 (thermal risk); are wear-

able even at extremely high or low temperatures; and are tested for arc resistance and their protective

effect (in accordance with IEC 61482-1-2).The so-called box test in accordance with IEC 61482-1-2

provides a method which is applicable also for protective gloves.

The arc protective glove by DEHN + SÖHNE has a Class 2 protec-

tion (7 kA/500 ms). Class 2 represents a high degree of protection

against thermal arc hazard. The high wearing comfort of the protective

glove is claimed to increase the wearing acceptance and thus the

risk of damage to the hands.

Effective operator protection with regard to arcing fault hazards should

be a combination of personal safety equipment, such as protective

gloves and clothing, with additional arc fault protection equipment.

Fit-testing system for eyewearImproperly fitted or incorrectly worn safety

eyewear may not provide sufficient protection

and may increase the chance of eye injury.

The most common types of eye injuries include

having foreign bodies such as splinters, dust

or chips in the eye, as well as cuts, chemical

burns, abrasions and scratches.

To address this issue, 3M has developed a

fit testing system for eyewear. The 3M Eyewear

Fit System is a tool used to compare differ-

ent styles of eyewear worn by an individual

to determine which one best fits the person.

The fit testing method includes a coverage

and gap analysis tool to assess the position

of the eyewear on the individual, in addition

to considering other factors which influence

product suitability and comfort.

In conjunction with the development of its

eyewear fit system, the company has released

the Maxim GT, the Fectoggle and the Virtua

Sport CCS models of safety glasses and

goggles that comply with AS/NZS 1337.1 for

personal eye protection.

Scan for safety informationThe CodeSafe digital platform is designed to reduce

the risk of injury by providing key information to em-

ployees through visual support to existing procedures

using QR code technology. This approach is said to

reduce the risk of misinterpretation of the written word

and overcomes language and literacy barriers by al-

lowing the employee to scan a CodeSafe QR code to

view safety, environment and quality communication

messages in an interactive way.

The product was originally developed with the sup-

port of both Melbourne Water and the Water Resource

Alliance partners for applications in the water industry.

In adopting the CodeSafe system, the Water Resources

Alliance was awarded the Australian Water Association

‘Water Industry Safety Excellence’ award for 2013.

RMIT University announced in June that it is partner-

ing with CodeSafe in a bid for research funding. The

research will evaluate the effectiveness and impact

of the CodeSafe system in promoting WHS in the

construction industry.

The CodeSafe system combines a systematic pro-

cess for: eliciting the tacit knowledge of construction

workers relating to the WHS aspects of the work tasks

they perform; engaging construction workers in script-

ing, acting and recording films to visually represent this

tacit WHS knowledge; and using Quick Response (QR)

code technology to make this knowledge quickly and

easily available to other workers who need to access it.

The CodeSafe system enables important WHS

information - such as documents, pictures, text and

even video - for a specific piece of equipment, location

or procedure to be delivered direct to a smartphone

instantly and on demand.

AccordingtotheexpertsatNationalGeographic, snakebitesare actually quite rare in Australia and, since the developmentof antivenom, fatalities have been low - between four to sixdeaths a year. This is in contrast to India, for example, wherebites often reach one million a year, with over 50,000 deaths.

Snake experts say bites in Australia are often caused bythe person being bitten when they are trying to kill or catch asnake or just showing off.

“Most snakes come out at night to hunt for food, but dur-ing the day they can be found under items like corrugated ironsheets, large rocks or piles of timber. As well, people shouldnever put their hand in a hole.

“It is especially important to stay away from snakes thatare coiled or whose heads are raised. These behaviours mayindicate they are primed to strike,” Silver said.

Camera system for airport crash trucksOrlaco Products has developed camera systems for ARFF

(aircraft rescue and firefighting) vehicles that are fully DEVS

compliant. The US Department of Transportation FAA posted an

advisory (Circular AC No: 150/5210-19A) that is being increas-

ingly adopted by airports all over the world. Section 1 of DEVS

(Driver’s Enhanced Vision System) ‘Vision Enhancement’ is quickly

becoming the standard for most airports, and is already a must

for category 10 airports.

Orlaco has several total (plug-and-play) vision solutions for

airport crash trucks. Its DEVS basic solution contains a robust,

waterproof thermal imaging (far infrared) camera, mounted on

a pan and tilt unit, with tailor-made cables and a 12” display.

The system is controlled by a joystick. As recommended by

the FAA advisory, it is possible to build out the system with an

easy yet durable video recorder. Additionally, more and more

users want to include a daylight zoom camera, rear-view camera

and even side-view cameras. The whole system is modular and

can be configured to meet user requirements. Orlaco can also

carry out control integration in, for example, the ARFF vehicle’s

CANbus system.

Dozer lift systemThe Enerpac DLS Series Dozer Lift System - developed particularly

for CAT D10s and D11s - features four-point custom synchronous

lift technology to provide safe, level lifting and lowering for track

and side frame maintenance of the dozers, while using single-

operator lifting.

The system’s two separate lifting units, incorporating the

synchronous PLC controlled load sensing and lifting technology,

can be swiftly and easily positioned at opposite ends of a dozer.

Each lifting unit includes two hydraulically operated jacks with

motorised locking rings. The jacks are bolted to a rolling cart

with fork pockets and retractable wheels for easy and precise

positioning of the units.

Lifting and lowering of the jacks can be paused at any point,

and a built-in alarm system will stop the synchronous lift in the

event of malfunction. Lifting speed is approximately 46 mm/min,

allowing users to finish a lift quickly to reduce equipment downtime.

The front and rear lifting jacks are driven by a hydraulic power

unit (HPU) and controls which includes a 25-foot pendant for

operator mobility and safety during lifts. The entire HPU and

controls are contained in a rolling cabinet which includes storage

for cable reels and hoses.

The controls include PLC and software to monitor and con-

trol a maximum of four lifting points simultaneously, and has a

touch screen mounted inside the cabinet, enabling the operator

to remotely monitor key lifting information, such as lifting height

and load. A single hydraulic unit has the capacity to operate up

to six lifting units.

PFA-lined ball valvesRichter PFA-lined ball valves KN/F and KK/F have been type-approved by TUEV and are suitable for use on

road tankers, tank wagons and transport containers. They comply with the German Clean Air Act (TA Luft).

In addition to compliance to European regulations, the ball valves, BVA and KA-N, have been certified by

the AAR (Association of American Railroad) in the USA (AAR Manual Section C, Part III, M-1002).

PFA/PTFE-lined butterfly valves are used on acid tank ships. Further examples are PFA-lined diaphragm

valves as filling and drain valves on special bromine containers and PFA-lined

magnetic drive pumps on road tankers for faster unloading, eg, H2SO4.

The integral PFA fluoroplastic lining has many advantages in that it is much more

resistant to corrosion than the alternative materials. It is an anti-adhesive vacuum

resistant lining which is easy for CIP (clean in place) and can be also used for

high-purity and for solids-laden fluids with large temperature ranges from up to

-60 up to 200°C.

The seal-less, magnetic drive centrifugal pumps are fitted with integral PFA lining

and are equipped with a hydraulically optimised closed impeller. The pumps are

also hermetically tight with no rotary shaft seal thus requiring minimal maintenance.

Commercial door openerThe Grifco range of door openers uses a patented

clutch mechanism, known as the Automatic Chain

Engage Mechanism (ACEM), which allows safe

and easy manual operation of roller doors and

shutters in the event of a power cut.

The range can be operated without power from

the ground due to their easy-to-use pull system

which works off the opener gears, eliminating

the need for someone to climb a tall ladder to

release the gearbox in order to manually wind

up the roller door. This is particularly useful for

emergency services buildings and other commer-

cial and industrial businesses in areas prone to

natural disasters like flooding, not only to ensure

the safety of workers, but also to streamline the

efficiency and response times of emergency

services workers.

The door openers can also allow a business

to potentially keep functioning despite a lack of

power, allowing warehouse doors to be opened

by a chain from the ground or even ensuring

owners can try to relocate large, valuable equip-

ment more quickly in the case of fire or flood.

The door openers can be easily hand oper-

ated with minimal exertion in times of power cuts

and the range of automated door solutions are

suitable for light commercial through to sectional

doors and heavy industrial roller shutters, with

the openers offering security and convenience

Portable actuatorAcrodyne has released the Acro-Torq Portable Actua-

tor range.

The portable actuator can operate a host of valves,

especially where infrequent valve operation will not

justify installation of a permanent actuator or the provi-

sion of power source is impractical or uneconomical. It

addresses the current OHS issues experienced in the

field by minimising fatigue and the possibility of injury.

It requires no additional power source other than its self-contained rechargeable batteries as well

as its built-in safety features when applied correctly by Acrodyne engineers.

Features include speed control and it is easily reversible for opening and closing of valves. The

actuator can be adapted to almost any valve or gearbox combination by means of dedicated cou-

plings. Torque control can be simply addressed by the inclusion of an Acro-Gears Aunspach torque

limiter. In addition, the company can also provide a range of gearboxes and other mountings and

accessories to assist in the safe operation of this actuator.

There are three models available ranging from battery to the higher torque capacity four-stroke

petrol versions.

Oliver Footwear’s Managing Director, Phil Hughes, provides some basic guidance on selecting the correct safety footwear to protect your feet against common risks on a job site.

He says firstly know the specific needs of your workplace environment. Is there a potential risk arising from falling objects, sharp surfaces or metals, or are chemicals or electrical hazards another potential risk?

For example, footwear required by an electrician will be different to the one required by a builder, welder or miner. An electrician would need to look for features such as an electrical resistant (EH) sole where a welder would need a rubber outsole that has heat resistance up to 300°C.

It is also imperative that your safety boots meet Australian and international safety standards. To achieve this, features like the toecap, thread, leather, laces, hooks, eyelets and even the lining of the boot need to pass a range of tests conducted by an independent registered laboratory. Any safety boot that has been checked and approved by AS/NZS 2210.3:2009 standards will have a certification logo on or inside the boot.

“Try the boots on,” says Hughes. “Can you wiggle your toes? Is there space within the shape of the toecap so that your toes are not in contact with the cap itself?”

A roomy, comfortable toecap is important so that you are relieved of pressure on your toes especially if you’re wearing your safety boots for an extended period of time.

For protection against falling objects, a metatarsal guard that shields the front of the foot is important. Is there risk from sharp objects or glass? Then a safety boot with mid-sole penetration protection is your best choice.

Another consideration is the moisture conditions at your work site. Long hours of exposure to wet feet can result in infections and blisters. Even short-term exposure to dampness can ruin your day on the job.

So be sure to select a safety boot that is weatherproof or water resistant. Premium, full-grain leather uppers provide the first defence against moisture. For additional water proofing, a membrane lining can be include in the boot.

Your choice of boots will also need to be resistant to other liq-uids like mineral oils and acids and even chemicals. Check the boot manufacturer’s recommendations carefully to see that your boots can resist these materials.

Comfort, of course, is of importance as most workers will be spending long hours of the day wearing safety footwear. A good safety boot should immediately feel comfortable without a suggestion that it is going to take some wearing in. When trying on a new safety boot, wear your everyday socks as this will help you check the comfort of your foot inside the boot.

Does the sole have defined comfort features? Is it flexible? Does it have a wide base for a grip on the surface? Take it for a walk in the store before you buy - on a firm surface like a concrete floor, not carpet. It will quickly show you just how comfortable it is likely to be.

Shock-absorbent removable insoles provide additional underfoot cushioning. They can be removed to be cleaned, replaced as needed or substituted with a custom prescription insert.

“Oliver continues to work closely with our customers to ensure we understand their workplace needs and deliver effective footwear solutions,” says Hughes. “It is this commitment to innovation and world’s best practice that is the foundation of the Oliver promise of comfort, performance and durability.”

Oliver Footwear commenced producing tough and durable boots for miners and farmers in 1887 and today operates a modern manu-facturing plant in Ballarat, Australia, supported by a dedicated team of employees.

Hand dryersDeveloped by a team of 125 Dyson engineers,

three Airblade hand dryers are fast, hygienic and

are a sustainable way to dry hands properly.

The Airblade Tap hand dryer washes and

dries hands in one place - no need to leave

the sink; the Airblade V hand dryer has concen-

trated technology, 60% smaller with the same

performance as larger dryers; a re-engineered

Airblade hand dryer had 2.5 kg of materials

removed and has a small carbon footprint.

Conventional hand dryers use one column of

bacteria-filled bathroom air to evaporate water

from hands, after much hand rubbing.

The Airblade dryer technology provides sheets

of high-velocity unheated air travel through tiny

apertures quickly scraping water from hands like

a windscreen wiper, leaving them dry.

The digital motor is a power dense brushless

DC motor, using a bonded magnet encased

in a carbon fibre sleeve. It is a small and fully

integrated 1600 W motor. Using digital pulse

technology, it accelerates from 0-90,000 rpm

in less than 0.7 s.

The hand dryer passes washroom air through

a HEPA filter to remove 99.9% of bacteria before

it’s blown onto hands.

The Airblade Tap hand dryer has infrared sen-

sors that pinpoint hand positions and release

water from the tap stem. Once hands are wet

and drying is requested, integrated circuitry

computes the information and activates the

digital motor, creating two high-velocity sheets

of air on the tap’s branches. Unheated clean air

is released to scrape water off hands, leaving

them dry quickly.

The Airblade V hand dryer has two sheets

of high-velocity air angled at 115° which span

the width of each hand and scrape off water.

The Airblade mk2 hand dryer has improved

acoustics and lower carbon emissions. It is

HACCP[1] approved for hygiene, so it is safe

for use in the food and beverage industry.

Splash and dust gogglesWith its range of Lexa Gogglegear, 3M provides lightweight, wide and

comfortable splash and dust goggles. Both types are suitable for general

industrial and construction use.

The range is designed with vent channels on the top and bottom. The resulting

airflow removes hot, moist air from the inside for comfort and it covers the inside

of the lens with cooler air to minimise fogging.

The splash model has a PVC shroud that wraps around the lens for a protective seal. Both the

splash and dust goggles feature durable polycarbonate lens construction with DX antifog, hard coating

and an extended viewing range without distortion. They also come with a secure elastic headband.

The goggles are available in medium and large clear lenses and a grey lens option. All goggles

in the range have a medium impact rating under Australia and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS1337.

Boots with steel mid-sole protectionOliver Footwear has added two safety footwear choices to its WB 34 series range. The

Oliver 34-632P, a wheat ankle high lace-up boot and the 34-634P, a black ankle high

lace-up boot, have water-resistant leather uppers and Steelflex protection against sole

penetration by sharps, fixtures, glass or similar inherently risky materials.

Both the boots have Oliver’s Comfortcushion impact absorption system that uses a combination

of cellular urethane and Poron to protect the heel and ball of the foot. The boots also use the Gripthane dual-density

polyurethane shock-absorbing midsole with a hard-wearing outer sole for tough workplace and job site conditions.

This sole choice also meets demanding adherence conditions particularly with wet or slippery job site surfaces to the

relevant safety standards under AS/NZS 2210.3:2009 as well as the relevant international EN and ASTM Standards.

Other key features are that the outer sole is heat resistant to 130°C of surface contact with resistance also to mineral

and organic oils and acids; the boots meet Electrical Hazard (EH) resistance requirements under current industry

standards; the comfort foot bed with perforated foam channels can enhance natural airflow to the feet; and the full

lining is treated with Aegis Microbe Shield solution to protect against odour, staining and deterioration resulting from

bacteria and microorganisms.

Both boots also have a Natureform safety steel toecap protection with a wider profile and have a padded collar

and tongue for added comfort. The Hydrostop protection also offers a three-year guarantee against the effects of

hydrolysis that can be a recurrent condition in hot and humid climatic conditions.

The Australian Mental Health Report Card,

which was released in November 2012 by

the National Mental Health Commission,

estimated 3.2 million Australians each year

live with mental health issues. Mental illness

has been estimated to cost the Australian

economy over $20 billion a year; however,

research from SANE Australia has highlighted

that the majority of people feel unsupported

when mentally unwell, and less than half of

managers (43%) in the workplace have an

understanding of mental illness.

NSW Police recently announced that it will

be addressing this lack of understanding by

providing specialised mental health training to

its front-line police officers across NSW. These

police officers are interacting with people who

suffer from mental illness most days but around

90% of the police have never had access to

formal mental health education, according to

a NSW Police spokesman.

The National Mental Health Commission

has also launched the Mentally Healthy

Workplace Alliance to help create Australian

workplaces that are mentally healthy (full

details on page 58).

On another note, The Safety Show Sydney

is being held from 3-5 September at the

Sydney Showground and I’m looking forward

to some of the presentations. Michael Tooma,

Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, will present a

workshop on bullying and says he will provide

practical guidance on the legal obligations

and strategies for preventing bullying in the

workplace.

I look forward to seeing you at the show!
