SAFETY IN NUMBERS

The Taralay Impression Control and Tarasafe ranges have been tested to meet the expectations of safety floors that you can trust and won’t let you down when it matters most.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and UK Slip Resistance Group’s (UKSRG) preferred measure for slip resistance is the pendulum test. This test measures the co-efficient of friction of a floor surface and the results are used to provide a slip potential classification. A pendulum test value (PTV) of 36 or higher is classified as low slip risk

PENDULUM TEST - BS 7976-2

Micro surface roughness measurements can also be used alongside the Pendulum test to provide an additional indication of slip risk with different contaminants. In wet conditions a surface roughness of 20 microns indicates a low slip risk. Surface roughness is also included in BS 7976-2 and the material has to attain >20. Results span high, medium and low slip risk categories as shown below.

Results are presented as an ‘R rating’, running from R9 to R13, where R9 is slippery when wet, and R13 least slippery. That covers wide bands of CoF (co-efficient of friction).

TARASAFE SAFETY FLOORINGSOLUTIONSThe Tarasafe Vinyl Safety Flooring collection is suitable for use in all areas of heavy traffic where slip-resistance, durability and hygienic conditions are required. Offering a number of benefits Tarasafe is constructed from vinyl and reinforced with a glass fibre grid. Deeply inlaid mineral crystal particles and coloured chips offer a brighter more decorative design and a lighter weight. Tarasafe contains no carborundum which can make the flooring darker and far more difficult to recycle.

Containing recycled materials the Tarasafe range has an environmental

rating of A+ (BRE) and is 100% recyclable at the end of its’ life. Tarasafe comes with a 12 year warranty. With slip-resistance R ratings from R10 to R12 and a high wear resistance rating of T the Tarasafe range meets HSE guidelines for safety flooring.

Tarasafe Ultra and Geo both have the added benefit of SparClean® treatment which is our unique and patented surface treatment which holds a far higher resistance to stains than non-treated alternatives. Surfaces treated with SparClean® offer up to 60% less water and detergent usage and independent studies have shown that payback is guaranteed after 2.2 years.

They are eco-friendly, 100% recyclable, Floorscore® certified and do not contain any heavy metals or CMR 1&2. They are also 100% compliant with REACH. The product emission rate of volatile organic compounds is < 100 µg/m3 (TVOC after 28 days – ISO 16000 -6). The SparClean® surface treatment improves the product performance in terms of stain and dirt resistance and designs last longer for extended durability.

TARASAFE ULTRA H2O is a slip-resistant vinyl floorcovering, with a PVC wear layer and deeply inlaid mineral particles and coloured chips for a decorative design together with a raised emboss for better slip-resistance.

TARASAFE ULTRA H2O is an ideal solution for traffic applications where enhanced slip-resistance with barefoot and durability are required such as wet areas. The raised embossing together with the mineral crystal particles gives a Class C barefoot slip-resistance (DIN 51 097) and R11 slip-resistance (DIN 51 130) which makes TARASAFE ULTRA H2O ideal for barefoot or shod applications. It is reinforced with a glass fibre grid in sheet form. Its inlaid wear layer with mineral crystal particles provides a wear resistance rating of P. Gerflor recognises the importance of being proactive and creating new ways to achieve sustainable development. This is why Gerflor is devoting substantial resources to environmental research. Gerflor’s achievements can be summarised as follows:

Health & Safety

Vinyl is widely used in the automotive industry, food packaging and healthcare where medical disposables come into close and intimate contact with patients. Gerflor uses this same high grade raw material to produce its floorcoverings to standards that exceed all prescribed health and safety requirements.• Selection of raw materials: no heavy metals, no solvent based inks, no

phtalates and components rated as carcinogenic, no formaldehydes, no PCP.• No substance potentially subject to any REACH (Registration, Evaluation and

Authorisation of Chemical) restrictions.• Low VOC emissions: on average more than 70% lower than European

standards.• Fire resistance : vinyl does not help fire spread and does not release toxic

gases like choride (Cl2) and far less carbon monoxide (CO) than any other type of flooring.

Recycling

Vinyl is one of the only building materials that is 100% recyclable. Unlike other plastics, it can be endlessly recycled into new products and materials adding value throughout its long life.As a specialist vinyl flooring manufacturer, Gerflor has developed recycling programs for:• Post-industrial waste recycling: almost 100% of our manufacturing waste is

recycled.• Post-installation waste recycling: in Europe Gerflor has started to organise

the collection of post installation waste from large projects. Our training centre “Gerflor Technocentre” is the first training centre to organise the complete recycling loop for all post installation waste.

• Post-consumer waste recycling: Gerflor vinyl floorings are fully recyclable at the end of their life and qualify for credits under many internationally accredited Green Building Schemes. Gerflor was also one of the founding members of the first vinyl floor covering recycling workshop: AgPR. End of life floors get recycled to manufacture, “second life” products such as road cones.

Gerflor’s manufacturing sites implement environmental management systems that are certified to ISO 14001. Across Europe fewer than 50% of manufacturers have achieved this. Gerflor’s sites are committed to continuously improving their environmental performance in terms of:• Air protection.• Reduction of energy consumption: preservation of water and resources

including the installation of heat exchangers to recover the heat generated by the production lines to heat the buildings.

• Selection of raw materials, recyclable packaging and local suppliers.

Life Cycle Analysis

Life Cycle Analysis is regarded as the ultimate means by which all environmental impacts are measured and improved upon during a product’s life cycle including manufacture, delivery, installation, cost of ownership and maintenance, ultimate disposal/recycling of all products.All new Gerflor product ranges are developed using a full life cycle analysis model.• In Europe, Gerflor is actively involved with the ERFMI (European Resilient

Flooring Manufacturer Institute) in preparing EU wide Life Cycle Assessment of a broad range of flooring types and specifications. From this study, a series of Environmental Product Declarations have been produced.

• In France, Gerflor has been involved with the SFEC to meet the HQE requirements.

• In the UK, all Gerflor products which match the BRE generic flooring specifications have been given either A or A+ ratings, with A+ representing the lowest environmental impact possible.

EASTERN LEISURE CENTRE, CARDIFFStaying fit and healthy whilst having some fun can be a recipe for a long, healthy life. Happily, many local councils UK nationwide have embraced this doctrine.

The council-run Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff had more than 250,000 users last year, but was in urgent need of modernisation. New features would include an open reception area, improved changing rooms, gym and soft play facilities; a new dance studio and spin room. Councillor Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for community development, Co-operatives and social enterprise, said at the time, “The modernisation of Eastern Leisure Centre has enjoyed strong support from both the community and elected councillors so this multi-million-pound investment will be welcome news.”

The project would be a perfect ‘fit’ for international flooring and interiors specialist Gerflor. They would provide their high-end Taralay Impression Control safety flooring in ‘Infinity Greige’ and ‘Esterel Chocolate’ colours, together with their uber-performing Taraflex® sports flooring in ‘Maple’ and ‘Lagoon’ to the appointed installers Cardiff-based Puma Floors Ltd.
