The Institution of Engineers (India), with a membership of over 7,00,000 is the largest body of engineers in the world. IEI will complete 100 years in 2020. In celebration of the same a 5 year programme (2015-2020) has been undertaken. This year Safety Convention is the Second activity under the same programme.

India is among the fastest growing economies in the world with the youngest and the largest workforce. As the country strives to achieve manufacturing excellence, industrial safety and sustainability are emerging to be critical parameters of its global competitiveness, much as quality was in the last two decades.

Production was the key focus area till 1980s. Bhopal disaster raised concern was realized because of the fact that every year millions occupational/industrial accidents occur which result in loss of production time equivalent to millions of man hours, machine hours etc. Of these about one-fifth production time is lost by those actually injured due to temporary and permanent disablement and the remaining production time is lost by fellow operators/ people in helping the injured, in taking care of the damage caused by accident etc. The loss to the industrial unit would appear much more alarming when death cases due to accidents are considered.

Need and concern for safety is therefore need of the hour. There are some direct costs/ effects of an accident but there are certain indirect costs involved in it also e.g. machine down time, damage to machine, idle time of nearby equipment and horror created among workers, loss of time etc. And, in terms of rescue and relief, in aid, cost compensation, legal implications and allied costs etc. Safety measures would not only eliminate/ avoid above costs, but would mean performing their moral responsibility towards workmen/operators also. Most important it improves competiveness.

Safety Convention 2017 is being organized to arrange a platform to collaborate with industries, organizations, corporates and individuals to ensure workplace safety and sustainable manufacturing operations that help prevent accidents and fatalities; alongwith ensuring best productivity & quality.

Industrial Safety with Focus on Manufacturing Excellence.

Safety in manufacturing and processing

Operational safety laws and norms for the industries

Laws governing labour safety

Skill Development for New Manufacturing Processing Technologies

Development of safer energy technologies

Operational safety at power plants-thermal, gas, hydro, nuclear and renewable

Energy systems for smart cities
