The blue whale can produce sounds

of up to 188 decibels that have beendetected as far away as 852 kilometres.

    FASTEST

The peregrine falcon can travel up

to 320kph when diving through the air!

    billion hairs covering their bodies!

    them alone.

    DEFENDING ANIMALS IN NEW ZEALAND

SAFE is New Zealands second largest and most pro-active

animal advocacy organisation. SAFE works every day not

only to help animals but also to teach people how to live

their lives with compassion towards all animals. SAFE has

been helping animals in New Zealand since 1932. Some ofSAFEs recent highlights are:

    FACTORY-FARMED PIGS

Y In 2009, with the help of comedian Mike

King, SAFE exposed the cruelty of factory pig

farming. Now thousands of New Zealanders

    no longer buy factory-farmed pork.

    JUMBO THE CIRCUS ELEPHANT

YAfter years of SAFE protests against the

use of exotic animals in circuses, Loritz Circus

retired their circus elephant Jumbo. Jumbo had

been a circus elephant, for over 30 years.

    CATCHA CRAY

Y In 2009 SAFE managed to get the cruel Catcha Cray

machines removed from bars around New Zealand.

    THEY HAVE EMOTIONS

YAnimals feel emotions. They can feel happy, sad, playful, angry,

excited feelings we all know and share.

    THEY FEEL PAIN

YAnimals can feel pain. They can suffer from stomachaches,

headaches, flu, broken bones, scratches and bumps just like we

    do.

    SIMILAR BRAIN POWER!

Y Did you know humans are animals too?

All animals (fish, birds, reptiles, crustaceans

and mammals) have a central nervoussystem that sends a message to the brain.

When we hur t ourselves, it says ouch!

    6. KEEP IT CLEAN. RUBBISH CAN HARM WILDLIFE

Plastic bags, bottle tops, cans and balloons regularly end up

in the ocean where animals can swallow them or become

entangled in them. Organise a beach clean-up to help keep the

    oceans free from rubbish.

    7. ADOPT A SHELTER ANIMAL.

If your family is ready to adopt an animal, rather than go to

a breeder or pet shop, visit your local animal shelter. These

    animals need you more.

    8. GO VEGETARIAN

To make meat, animals must be farmed and

killed. We can choose the type of foods we

eat. By choosing vegetarian or vegan foods you will save lives.

    9. ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS

Many household products are tested on animals in often painful

or deadly experiments. Choose products that are not tested on

    animals.

    10. BE READY TO HELPIf you see an animal hurt or in trouble, know what to do. Small

animals can be wrapped in a towel and placed in a box that has

holes to let in air. Keep them warm and still, and contact your

local SPCA or vet right away.

    1. TOO MANY KITTENS AND PUPPIESHelp stop the overpopulation of cats and dogs by ensuring your

family cat or dog is desexed. Encourage others to do the same.

    2. BIRD IN A CAGEIt might be fun to have caged animals but did you know its

miserable for them? Please dont keep animals such as birds,

rabbits or guinea pigs in cages, coops or hutches. Why not

build a bird-feeder in your garden instead? Those with birds orrabbits, ensure they get plenty of exercise.

    3. ZOO ANIMALS.People who like animals generally love zoos. But think of it from

the animals point of view. Would you like to spend your whole

life in a cage? Please avoid going to the zoo. There are hundreds of

amazing documentaries and films that teach us about animals in the

wild. Check outAnimal Planetonline and on TV.

    4. ANIMAL SANCTUARIESFarm, circus and other caged animals are sometimes fortunate

enough to be rescued and rehabilitated at animal sanctuaries.

Help out where you can with a donation or your time.

    5. HARMING ANIMALS FOR FUNDuck shooting, hunting and fishing harm and kill animals, which

is not fun at all for animals. Try to avoid taking part in these

types of bloodsports. SAFE says feed the ducks and fish, dont

    shoot or fish them!
