Citation preview
The Economic Impact of theSan Antonio Economic Development FoundationLocated and Expanded Companies in 2014
The San Antonio Economic Development Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on recruiting and expanding quality industry and business in the San Antonio area. In the last five years, the SAEDF has located 100 companies and added over 23,000 jobs, creating a total economic impact of $8.8 billion.
2014 proved to be a very successful year for the SAEDF. Increased recruitment and retention efforts yielded an outcome of 4,762 jobs, greatly surpassing the initial goal of 4,000 total direct jobs.
San Antonio is now a prime location for several different industries including energy, manufacturing, aerospace/aviation, bioscience/healthcare, information technology, and information security. In 2014, a variety of industries in information technology, manufacturing, distribution, and energy chose the Alamo city for expansion or location. Information technology demonstrated the strongest growth with over 3,000 jobs created/retained. This industry represented about 60 percent of all growth.
Expenditures from companies were ultimately spread between all industry sectors because indirect supplier spending and induced consumer spending were factored into the total calculations.
The pie chart shows how the 4,762 new direct jobs are spread across industries and how that translates into a total of 7,792 jobs in several industries once the multiplier effects are taken into account.

Direct operation expenses of $683 million from these new and expanding firms translate into secondary spending by suppliers and employees. These indirect and induced effects, along with estimated employment, payroll, personal income, sales, and tax revenues, are calculated using IMPLAN based on Texas benchmark data provided primarily by the U.S.Department of Commerce.
In 2014, operations from 28 firm resulted in $1.1 billion in total economic impact and created a total of 7,792 jobs. Subsequent years will have a similar economic impact.
Capital investments take the form of construction and improvements in plant and equipment for the year. The $744 million in capital expenditures translates into $1.2 billion in total economic impact and 7,785 jobs created.
In order to portray how secondary effects of new industry are beneficial for the economy, we provide several estimations. In 2014, 599 homes were constructed and 1,521 cars and light units were produced, and $25 million in retail sales were generated. From 2014-2018, it is estimated that 1,751 homes will be constructed, and 4,443 cars and light units will be produced, which result in total retail expenditures of $125 million. All of this translates into a total economic output of $649 million.
