FEAST OF FAITH

The Prayer Over the Gifts In the liturgy of the 1570 Missal, this prayer

was called the “secret” prayer. It was “secret” not

because its content was mysterious, but because it

was prayed in silence by the priest, who only recited

the conclusion aloud: . . . per omnia saecula

saeculorum. With the reforms of the Second Vatican

Council, we again hear these rich prayers spoken

aloud. They remind us to prepare ourselves for what

is to happen in the Eucharistic Prayer, for it is not

only the bread and wine that will be transformed.

The Prayer Over the Gifts is a prayer for

transformation, an expression, in a few words, of all

that we hope that the liturgy will accomplish in our

lives. We ask God to accept the gifts we present, and

to change us even as God hallows the bread and wine.

As we listen carefully to the Prayer Over the Gifts, we

are reminded of what it is that we seek in the

Eucharist: to be made holy; to be drawn closer to

God; to come to eternal joy, unity, peace, and

salvation. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Servers received golf instructions from golf professional Bob Joyce. Mr. Joyce offered his time and golf expertise in showing the Altar Servers the basic techniques of golf. They also learned the long and short games. It was a wonderful first experience for some of the Altar Servers and a refresher course for the others. We thank Mr. Joyce very much for his devotion to the Altar Servers.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church

______________________ July 17, 2011 Today we remember 16 Carmelite Sisters of Compiegne (kohm-PYEN ), France, who gave their lives for the right to worship God freely. During the French Revolution, some horrible things happened. The revolutionary government outlawed religious orders, and the sisters of Compiegne had to leave their convent, put away their religious clothing, and pray only in secret. Even so, 16 of them were arrested. In prison they bravely took up their religious clothing again, and their prayer. On July 17, 1794 they were taken to their execution singing the psalms and the prayers for the dying. Like Christian martyrs in every century, they were willing to die with Christ, knowing that they would rise with him to Glory. Gospel Romans 8:35,37-39

Listen to the words of the apostle Paul Brothers and Sisters: can anything separate us from the love to Christ? Can trouble, suffering, and hard times, or hunger and nakedness, or danger and death? In everything we have won more than a victory because of Christ who loves us. I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord! The word of the Lord. Reflection: does anything try to separate me form the love of Christ? Have I been as close to God this summer as I want to be? Is there some difficulty that I am facing because of my love for God? Prayer: Loving God, you call us your children, And save us through your own suffering. Defend us against evil. Make us brave and faithful, And strengthen us in times of trouble. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

July 17, 2011 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

______________________ July 23, 2011 Today we remember Saint Bridget, the patron

of Sweden. Bridget had a happy marriage and raised eight children. One of her daughters was Saint Catherine of Sweden. She also took seriously the command of the gospel to care for those beyond her family. She provided for the poor, and had a hospital built where she tended the sick. After her husband died and her children were grown, Bridget gave her possessions away and went to a monastery to devote more time to prayer. From her childhood she had received insights and visions while praying. Even at the monastery God gave her work to do. She wrote scolding letters to popes and rulers, urging them to be more just and honest. She traveled to the holy places of Europe and the Holy Land and died in Rome in 1373. Prayer: God of grace and wisdom, you give us your word To teach and guide us. And you continually raise up good people who show with their lives that they follow a holy and Loving God, Let our lives be as true as our faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

folded thin waffles into holders. Enjoy a Menches masterpiece today!
