IT'S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR! – It was in the bulletin of March 22, 2020 that we announced to you new precautions which were instituted in response to the Coronavirus infections. A year ago is when we were instructed by the Archdiocese to discontinue practices such as Communion from the cup and the Sign of Peace. It was only a week later that we were shut down entirely. What a sad situation that was! Yes, it has been a difficult 12 months but at least now we see the light at the end of the tunnel and it is getting brighter. Some liturgical practices may never return while others will be back at some future point. In the meantime, we will continue to celebrate Mass outside the parking lot and hopefully soon we will open our doors to the church and have a full schedule and our parishioners can avail themselves of the Sacraments. STATIONS OF THE CROSS – One of the most beautiful of Lenten practices is the Way of the Cross. We are not sure if this event will take place, however, next bulletin we will let you know more information. Thank you. HOLY WEEK WILL LOOK DIFFERENT – We have been getting a few questions about how are we going to celebrate Holy Week this year. Last year, for the first time ever, we were unable to celebrate the beautiful days of Holy Week publicly. This was terribly sad and unprecedented but Holy Week came in the midst of the total lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. We are still under quite a few restrictions in our worship such as the wearing of masks, social distancing and sanitation procedures. We have received guidance from the Archdiocese regarding the liturgical celebrations. However, we are not sure if we can have processions, the washing of the feet, kissing of the cross, etc. Obviously, we will miss these practices if we do not have these events. More information in next weeks bulletin. Thank you.

¡HA SIDO CASI UN AÑO! – Fue en el boletín del 22 de marzo de 2020 que les anunciamos nuevas precauciones que se instituyeron en respuesta a las infecciones por Coronavirus. Hace un año fue cuando la Arquidiócesis nos instruyó que descontinuáramos prácticas como la Comunión de la copa y el Signo de la Paz. Fue solo una semana después que nos cerraron por completo. ¡Qué situación tan triste! Sí, han sido 12 meses difíciles pero al menos ahora vemos la luz al final del túnel y se está volviendo más brillante. Es posible que algunas prácticas litúrgicas nunca regresen, mientras que otras lo harán en algún momento futuro. Mientras tanto, continuaremos celebrando la Misa fuera del estacionamiento y, con suerte, pronto abriremos nuestras puertas a la iglesia y tendremos un horario completo y nuestros feligreses podrán aprovechar los sacramentos. VÍA CRUCIS – Una de las prácticas de Cuaresma más hermosas es el Vía Crucis. No estamos seguros si este evento se llevará a cabo, sin embargo, en el próximo boletín les daremos más información. Gracias. LA SEMANA SANTA SE VERÁ DIFERENTE – Hemos recibido algunas preguntas sobre cómo vamos a celebrar la Semana Santa este año. El año pasado, por primera vez, no pudimos celebrar públicamente los hermosos días de la Semana Santa. Esto fue terriblemente triste y sin precedentes, pero la Semana Santa se produjo en medio del bloqueo total debido a la pandemia de Coronavirus. Todavía estamos sometidos a bastantes restricciones en nuestro culto, como el uso de máscaras, el distanciamiento social y los procedimientos de saneamiento. Hemos recibido orientación de la Arquidiócesis con respecto a las celebraciones litúrgicas. Sin embargo, no estamos seguros de que podamos tener procesiones, el lavatorio de los pies, el beso de la cruz, etc. Obviamente, echaremos de menos estas prácticas si no tenemos estos eventos. FEAST OF FAITH Postures of the Mass In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. En la cultura occidental, estar de pie es un signo de atención, una señal de respeto: todos se ponen de pie cuando el juez entra en la sala del tribunal, por ejemplo. Estar de pie es también una antigua postura de oración, mencionada con frecuencia en el Antiguo Testamento. Cuando comienzan las lecturas, nos sentamos: una postura de escucha. María se sentó a los pies de Jesús para escuchar sus enseñanzas; la multitud se sentó en la ladera o en la orilla del mar para escuchar sus palabras. Arrodillarse es otra postura llena de significado. Expresa adoración y adoración, pero también puede expresar humildad y contrición. TOTAL ALLEGIANCE In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at Easter—occupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesus—ritualized in baptism—demands a total allegiance to him and none other. LEALTAD TOTAL En semanas anteriores hemos visto cómo el tema de la alianza, en preparación para la alianza bautismal que se celebra en Semana Santa, ocupa un lugar importante en nuestro ciclo de lecturas de Cuaresma. La noción de una alianza como una relación entre dos partes lleva consigo la expectativa de la responsabilidad mutua y la fidelidad a los términos del pacto. Cuando Dios forjó la alianza con el pueblo judío en el monte Sinaí, se trataba de una promesa de la protección de Dios, y que siempre les permitiría el acceso familiar como Pueblo Escogido. Por su parte, el pueblo judío debería observar los requisitos de la ley, que se resumen aquí en los Diez Mandamientos. Para estar en una relación de pacto con el Señor Dios requiere una relación exclusiva, al igual que ser discípulo de Jesús –que expresamos ritualmente en el Bautismo– exige una total lealtad a Él y a ningún otro.
