FATHERS’ DAY – Today we wish all of our fathers a very happy and blessed Fathers’ Day! May the Lord bless and reward each of you for positively answering His call to the beautiful vocation of fatherhood. SUNDAY MASS OBLIGATION - DISPENSATION IS LIFTED – This past week the state of California reopened for business with most Covid restrictions removed. As a result, Archbishop Jose Gomez has informed all Catholics in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that he has lifted the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Day Mass effective this weekend. What this means is that all Catholics should now be back to Mass in person. The only exception to this is the one, which has always been in place, which is for persons who are sick or physically unable to come to Mass in person. We will continue our Facebook livestream on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in English and Spanish at 11:30 a.m. In addition, for those who are homebound a good resource is the daily and Sunday Mass available at www.ewtn.com which is available in English and Spanish. This may also be a good time to remind ourselves of the importance of worshiping in person at Mass each Sunday and Holy Day. This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says on the subject: "The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life. 'Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.'" (CCC #2177) "The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin." (CCC#2182) Last year in March of 2020, Archbishop Gomez granted a dispensation for all Catholics in the Archdiocese from the Sunday Mass obligation due to the pandemic. Now, thank be to God, we can all return to regular worship so the dispensation has been lifted. It is wonderful to see everyone back in church again! All of our regular liturgical practices are now back including the offertory procession, use of confessionals, etc. The only things that are still restricted are the Sign of Peace and Communion from the Cup. We are not sure if that will ever return. And it is not necessary since we receive the entire Christ: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Sacred Host. LET'S ALL DO OUR PART! – This last Sunday we began the annual Archdiocesan campaign "Together in Mission." As you know, this is the campaign, which assists the poorest parishes and schools in the Archdiocese. This is always a very important campaign but perhaps more than ever this year due to last year's pandemic shutdown. If you have participated in the past then you should have already received the letter from the Archbishop. But if you have not, please be sure to fill out one of the envelopes in the pews or do so online by going to https://www.givecentral.org/togetherinmission21 From there you would select Sacred Heart Church – Los Angeles and then follow the instructions. This year we have to raise a total of $22,000.00. This is a large sum for us. Yet, if every family in the parish participated, we could raise that rather easily. We urge you to please consider prayerfully how much you wish to pledge to the campaign for this year. It can be paid off over the course of several months. May God reward you for your generosity! BAPTISMS – We occasionally still get the question "Are you doing baptisms yet?" Well, we never stopped Baptisms during the pandemic. We have Baptisms each Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The first Saturday of every month are celebrated in English and the rest of the month in Spanish. Simply stop by the Rectory to register your child and receive information. Please remember that babies should be baptized within the first month of their birth so registration should take place in the last months of pregnancy.

DÍA DE LOS PADRES – ¡Hoy les deseamos a todos nuestros padres un feliz y bendito Día de Los Padres! Que el Señor los bendiga y recompense a cada uno de ustedes por responder positivamente a su llamado a la hermosa vocación de la paternidad. OBLIGACIÓN DE MISA DOMINICAL - SE LEVANTÓ LA DISPENSACIÓN – La semana pasada, el estado de California reabrió sus operaciones con la mayoría de las restricciones Covid eliminadas. Como resultado, el Arzobispo José Gómez ha informado a todos los católicos de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles que ha levantado la dispensa de la obligación de asistir a la Misa del Domingo y de los Santos a partir de este fin de semana. Lo que esto significa es que todos los católicos deberían volver a Misa en persona. THE WIND AND THE SEA: Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
EL VIENTO Y EL MAR: Los que conocen bien el Lago Superior le tienen un saludable respeto, y siempre están alerta sobre sus caprichosos cambios de ánimo. Muchos barcos hundidos y muchos botes hechos astillas son testigos de lo que el lago puede hacer cuando está de mal humor. Las lecturas de este domingo nos evocan memorias de ese lago, del poderoso río Mississippi o del océano mismo. ¿Quién, fuera de Dios, podrá controlar esas aguas poderosas, o imponerles límites, diciendo “Hasta aquí llegarás”? El lago que describe el Evangelio de hoy era un lago en el que se levantaban súbitas tormentas, en las que los vientos huracanados agitaban olas enormes. Pero estas fuerzas tan poderosas se someten a la voluntad de Dios. Los marineros y los pescadores le tienen un saludable respeto al poder de las aguas. FEAST OF FAITH: The Collection: A Privilege As the altar is prepared for the celebration of the Eucharist, the collection is taken up. In the early church, this part of the Mass must have been something to behold, as the people suddenly began to move, bringing forward to the deacons and priests freshly-baked bread and fine wine. Then, after the Eucharistic Prayer, that same community came forward again in the Communion procession, and they received back the very gifts they had given, now transformed into something infinitely more precious than bread and wine: the very Body and Blood of Christ. Beginning around the eleventh century, it became the custom for people to present money instead of bread and wine, and the procession of the faithful gradually disappeared (it survives in the liturgy of Holy Thursday). But the meaning is the same. We continue to bring the fruit of our labors and to offer them freely to God. And God continues to transform them into Christ. It is through our generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure that our parishes can preach the gospel, reach out to the sick and the imprisoned, and celebrate the sacraments. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. FIESTA DE LA FE: Pan y Vino Presentamos pan y vino como ofrenda porque son elementos que encierran la vida en sí mismos. No son un producto único, sino el resultado de un proceso. En sí mismos, son simbólicos del misterio pascual que celebra la Eucaristía; hay un proceso de muerte y vida. El grano de trigo ha muerto, ha dado fruto, se ha triturado y ahora es pan para que todos coman. El vino ha salido de las parras generosas, trae en sí la espera del tiempo, la madurez de la uva, la extracción del jugo, la fermentación… hay un proceso de vida para llegar no sólo al vino, sino a un buen vino; a un vino que es la sangre misma de la vida, que dentro de sí lleva ya el aspecto festivo de algo que se celebra y se comparte. Es más que una bebida relajante o sabrosa, es la bebida sagrada porque en ella se acompaña una promesa, se marca un momento, se vive un juramento. Comer y beber siempre han sido un gesto de solidaridad entre hombres y mujeres; se come y bebe con quien se tiene confianza, con quien se es familia, con quien se espera re-crear la propia vida a partir de algo que va más allá de nosotros mismos. ——Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
